Zyrtec and Hydroxyzine for General Summer Itchiness?

My horse has been super itchy all summer, from face to butt. He’s always liked a good scratch, and there’s no sores or bumps. So I was surprised when a new vet said its allergies, and to put him on zyrtec or hydroxyzine. I wish I had known this back in May!

Are folks using meds for generalized summer itchiness now? She said I could try Zyrtec or hydroxyzene, that horses respond differently to both. Is one of these meds usually more effective?
Thanks!

I use Zyrtec all summer and find it SO helpful for my horses that struggle with itchy stuff. Highly recommend, works just great for us.

My guy was super itchy for a bit and then one of his eye got all sorts of puffed up. Vet gave him some dex and we started him on Zyrtec and that resolved the initial reaction and we have been holding over good since! I am just going to keep him on it during the itchy months moving into next spring/summer.

I have mine on Platinum Performance Skin and Allergy and it has been excellent for him. Before putting him on it, he had very watery/itchy eyes and would have sneezing fits during rides.

Another benefit of the skin and allergy is that you can continue to feed it while showing (if that is a concern of your’s).

Has anyone tried the Kinetic Vet Skin and Allergy?

My mare has been having weepy eyes, general itchiness (esp her tail), and showed up this morning with mild hives. She’s been on zyrtec for about 3 days … just ran out of that and switched her to benadryl. But am wondering if a supplement might be better than the meds (since the zyrtec doesn’t seem to be helping).

Just out of curiosity, what dose have you been using? It’s a pretty broad range, it might be worth trying to up it (if you’re not already there.)

0.2-0.4 mg/kg once or twice daily

I have a welsh pony on zyrtec and a mini that takes hydroxyzine. The welsh was initially started on hydroxyzine and it worked well for him but he stopped sweating so we switched to zyrtec. Both worked about the same as far as resolving his symptoms. Hope this helps.

I’m also on the Zyrtec win group. Hydroxyzine really did nothing. I buy the tabs on Amazon. The safety profile is very good. If no effect talk to your vet about pushing the dose?

She weighs somewhere between 1100-1200 lbs. I was giving her 12 tablets (120 mg) twice a day, so on the lower end of that range. Looks like the upper range would be 20 tablets twice a day.

Thanks for this. Just emailed my vet to see if a higher dosage would be appropriate to try.
