I’m reading through old threads on here and it seems the general guide is 10-20 of the 10mg citirizine tablets per day. If any of you have used this drug on your horse(s), how long before you noticed a difference?
I have used it with success for my horse. I thought I saw a difference in a few days or maybe a week.
a few days for me - if I miss a day, my mare starts having weepy eyes. I use 13 pills 2x/day (but she’s about 1800 lbs). From what my vet said - start higher than you may need, get it under control, then drop down.
Also, FYI cheapest place I’ve found for them is Costco.
The studied dose is 0.2-0.4mg/kg every 12-24 hours. 10-20 of the OTC pills are the low and high dose for a 500kg/1100lb horse. Bigger horses need more. I only say that because lots of horses weigh a lot more than 1100lb, so trying even 20 every 12 hours and saying “see, didn’t work” may be because you didn’t start with enough.
Thank you for this. I may have a graduate degree in English, but I “don’t math!” LOL I’d guess my guy is about 1200 based on the confirmed weight of my former horse being 1400 on the hospital scale. How many would you suggest if I give them two times a day for him? (at least to start)
1200 / 2.2 makes for 545kg.
The dose is then 109-218mg, and at 10mg pills, that’s (rounding up) 11-22 pills 1-2 times a day.
I always recommending starting with the high dose, twice a day, until you get the results you want, and then taper down to find the lowest effective dose
SO many vets jump right to 10 pills twice a day, and then many owners claim the drug doesn’t work for them, when they only started at the bare min (or even less).
Sometimes you CAN find a lowest effective dose that’s less than 0.2mg/kg, you just don’t start there
Ok! I’m going to give this a shot. Thank you. His nose runs clear all day, and between that and breathing in dirt while grazing, I’m wiping mud out of his nostrils each evening. LOL
Thanks for your help!
At the risk of looking like a complete moron…so the high dose would be 44 pills a day fed at once or split into two 22 pill feedings? Placing an amazon order.
Yes, 11 to 22, and either once or twice a day. The 11 and the 22 are a single dose, and you give that single dose 1 or 2 times a day.
You wouldn’t give the highest daily dose (44 here) in a single serving. You want to at least start by having the same single dose in each of 2 feedings for a more consistent blood level. Then you can work your way down, and you could end up with 22 once a day. 11 twice a day would be better, but 22 is still a high end single dose so that’s fine too.
I have a very small pony (not quite mini) chunky pony who gets horrible hives and scratches herself raw (which then, of course in Florida, become summer sores).
She gets 6 tablets 2X day. While the hives never go away completely, this dosage seems to work for her. Now she still rubs but spends more time rolling and scratching her back, which doesnt cause any issues except dry grass in her mane…
