Anybody try this collar? Is it worth it? I have two diehard cribbers that will die with me. Like to find a more comfortable effective solution than the garden variety collars available.
Good reviews on their site but only a few. Like to get some more feedback before I drop that kind of money. Thanks!
We have this and it is the only collar ours won’t crib with. We put both straps behind his ears, not like the Miracle Collar, (which he hates) and the way it is pictured on the SmartPak add. It has held up great, its 2 yrs old.
More information please !
Does it have to be as  tight as the miracle collar ??? And does it make sores  - hot spots in the summer month? Thanks !
Another option that actually works
I this collar and it works too!
Doesn’t cause rubs across the forehead at all.
I rotate between this one and the miracle collar every couple of weeks cause this one does have the tendency to get stretched out, and slide down the neck if not tight enough. But I like it 100% more than anything else!
Has it stretched to where you cannot use it anymore?

As long as it is in front of the ears, it is going to bother them. Horses just hate the strap going across their head.
Thanks for pointing that out!

OMG I just looked at it again. I did not realize it went in front of the ears. The pic is of a black horse with a black leather strap.
I just saw all the nice fluffy padding and thought it might be a comfy cure for their bad habit.
Well that takes care of that. My mares hated the MiracleCollar because of the in front of the ears configuration. It always did look like it would give a horse a headache.
I guess I will stick with my sheepskin covered stirrup leather. Maybe you just can’t build a better mousetrap:lol:
That Rusty Dare Cribbing Collar looks pretty interesting. I bet if they changed their name to something like “Comfort Collar” or “Amazing Collar” they would make a fortune.
I actually use the the Rusty Dare on one of the girls. Its a bit clunky but I don’t have to make it real tight, on this particular mare. It works well for her.
The other mare wears a good old fashioned stirrup leather. That works best for her. Both are covered in sheepskin.
Yikes! I’m glad my minor cribber can wear a miracle collar and I don’t have to go spend another $200 on something!
It works just fine on ours behind the ears. We had a Miracle Collar and he hated it, with a passion. It has stretched, we just added more holes, not a big deal. No sores, no rubs, when this one wears out, we will get another. It really was the ONLY one that worked.
I have one. The Miracle Collar rubbed my horse around the buckle. This one does not rub. The leather is good quality. I would recommend this one. I put the strap in front of the ears like in the photo and it works.
I have a cribber in a miracle collar now. I’ve been looking for a better alternative. When I first put him in it, it worked like a charm. Now he cribs through the collar. And it’s on so dang tight, I won’t/can’t crank it down any more.
He’s out 24/7. How durable is the smartpak one?
And on the Rusty Dare one, someone mentioned that you have to watch for stretching? How effective has it been compared to the Miracle collar?
All leather is going to stretch, so you will need to add holes, and tighten a bit occasionally, just to maintain the same tightness.
I have never had a horse have a problem with the tightness of a plain leather collar, but the Miracle (I call it the Misery Collar) really is uncomfortable for them.
With a regular soft leather basic collar, when they hold their head in a normal, relaxed position, it is not tight at all. A collar works by preventing them from tightening that muscle when in a cribbing position. It will always need to be tight in that position to do anything at all.
I have had a horse that was in a collar so tight that you needed to be very strong to get it to the correct hole - when held up. Still, as soon as the horse lowered her head a bit, you could fit your whole arm thru it.
I have a Dare collar on my old mare who is a diehard cribber, but easily discouraged. It is not all that tight, but has stretched a bit. It works well on her.
I use a stirrup leather on my other mare, who is a casual cribber but very hard to discourage when the mood hits her. The strap is fairly snug but I agree with Darlyn. Depending on her head position, it can be pretty loose.
The cribbing is annoying but the biggest issue is grinding their front teeth down and that’s just not good for them.
Why even bother using a collar?
Suppose it depends on how you feel about your horse wearing their front teeth down to the gums.
and paying for colic surgery
and premature arthritis from constant repetitive motion on the front leg joints
Watch my horse go through a cribbing induced gas colic and then ask that question again. I wouldn’t wish his pain on my worst enemy. He doesn’t love the Miracle Collar but he tolerates it, never protests when it is put on or tightened (I can loosen it in his stall one hole). I have been thinking about the Smartpak one but can’t bring myself to spend that much money without some input, so thank you very much to the OP for starting this.
