2016 Kentucky Derby & Oaks . . .

Southwest Stakes runs tomorrow just past 6pm - points towards the Derby!

Pre-race in the San Vicente, I like Exxagerator. He looks good and Kent likes his chances. Going out on limb. LOL.

Woops. Another rotten limb for me. NYQUIST is six for six without much of a struggle.

Nyquist did look good…

Suddenbreakingnews in the Southwest Derby was smoking hot rolling from the rear of the field to win down the stretch. I think it was American Dubai was second… not impressed with Collected’s run.

Anybody think Nyquist gets a triple digit beyer?

Just my impression of the way the San Vicente developed but I think that O’Neil told the rider not to use NYQUIST up to win the race. After all, the colt is already in the derby points wise. I don’t think we’ll see a double digit Beyer prior to the derby. Exxagerator was full out in the stretch and NYQUIST had full control of the lead.

Based on times. The Southwest was not the same class of race. Two different tracks though.

Yeah, but there is almost no question that Suddenbreakingnews can go classic distance if his pedigree is any indication. I would guess that the Southwest was very close to a muddy track, given the weather around here for the past week.

I would agree that the Southwest Derby wasn’t the quality of the field that the San Vicente was but still liked the performance of Suddenbreakingnews.

The Derby march continues

Both of your comments are well said. The track was definitely off and it might be the derby will see another MIND THAT BIRD stretch run. After last year’s betting against AP I’m all ears for 2016.

One of the news stories quoted someone as saying that Suddenbreakingnews was climbing the track the first furlong or so.

Does anyone know if his people are planning on keeping him at Oaklawn for the Rebel and/or Arkansas Derby?

Looks like the next stop for SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS is the Rebel Stakes.

Haskin 's 3/16 Derby Dozen is out. It appears he originally did not see anything in the SW stakes field that he liked but apparently liked what he saw at the finish.

Paulick put up a link for this. I thought it to be very interesting. It shows the historical progression of derby preps.

Nyquist beyer is 100.

GUN RUNNER wins Risen Star.

MO TOM impressive with AFLEET ALEX balance and talent.

VENUS VALENTINE was very impressive as a 74-1 shot to win the Rachel Alexandra Stakes and 50 points. She had a real hug the rail stretch run. Can’t help but be please that all the nice fillies are heading to the oaks. Tom Amos has been pretty quiet about VV. Along with MO TOM in Tom’s barn it is going to be exciting for him at the beginning of May.

Aeroforce appears to be off the Derby trail… nothing after the Risen Star but sounds like connections not happy with how he backed up in the stretch.

Derby and Oaks are clear as mud, right?

Still thinking Nyquist and Mohaymen for the boys and Songbird to me feels like the real strong standout for the ladies

I am all ears on this. My 2015 picks are akin to having shot myself in the foot with what I thought was an unloaded gun. Would you like to be more specific on your Oaks and Derby Futures wagering?

Gun Runner I think has taken #1 in points for the derby with his Risen Star win.

Derby points to date has GUN RUNNER as #1 at 51 points.

Oaks points to date has VENUS VALENTINE at #1 with 50 points.

Still early. I think this was the first weekend for 50 pt races but more to come.

Wonder if these will make it to the gate in 2+ months

Good point. Some of us should be prepared for the worst.
