2017 Triple Crown

Free past-performances from Brisnet for the likely 142nd Preakness Stakes field

http://www.brisnet.com/brisnet_promos/Preakness17.pdf

It would appear that while the Preakness allows up to 14 starters there will be perhaps just 10 or 11 runners. Yes I know the prestige factor and all with the Derby, but honestly at least 5-runners who started in KY should’ve just been pointed here instead.

Regarding Royal Mo’s condition he’s at University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center with surgery this afternoon

According to Shirreffs, Dr. Dean Richardson advised him that Royal Mo’s long-term health would be best suited by having an ankle fusion surgery.

“He did X-rays and more diagnostics and said the ankle fusion – where they put a plate that runs from the cannon bone to the long pastern – would be best,” Shirreffs said Monday.

Shirreffs, barring any complications, said Royal Mo likely would remain at New Bolton for another week before going to Kentucky, perhaps to WinStar Farm.

So in other words, while Thunder Snow may have worked over wet tracks in England, probably not the slop that was Churchill Downs

Genetics are. not. that. simple. Neither is predicting injuries to race horses.

Statistically speaking, Indian Charlie was ranked #95 for the 2016 lifetime starts per starter (and #56 for % of foals started). Another In Excess son, Bring The Heat, was #76. Three Unbridled’s Song sons made the list at #s 16, 35, 52.

https://www.grayson-jockeyclub.org/r…2034%20no1.pdf

These lists are not perfect; for example, price point highly influences a horse’s career. But I prefer hard numbers to skewed perception based on high profile injuries in the media.

Horses don’t careen sideways out of the gate due to a muddy track. They warmed up on it for 15 mintues before they went to the gate, he had plenty of time to splash in the puddles.

If folks think bad actors like Thunder Snow shipped from Europe and on a dirt track are rare - try this on turf and local in England …

Rather small. Evidently black type Grade 1, second leg of the Triple Crown and $1,500,000 doesn’t attract much these days

Not even a filly making a showing …

“He does a lot of bonehead things for no reason whatsoever,”

Heres hoping he doesn’t pull a boneheaded move going into the Preakness.

“eccentric”?

Seems really quiet here for Preakness day. The NBC Sports coverage just started. Looks like there has been some rain on the track already, from what I can tell. What is the weather forecast for Pimlico today?

Overcast 30 mi south; should not be getting any rain, i don’t think. Big blob of wetness on the radar, but iT should stay well south of DC. Nice and cool for everyone getting drunk in the infield.

Eta: track is fast

Great Preakness! That was exactly what I wanted to see: A fair shot for everybody, far as I could tell on the monitor, rather than a winner having not a straw in his path while others played bumper cars behind him. I also wanted somebody to give Always Dreaming a real gut check; thank you, Classic Empire. I do think AD is a very talented, nice colt, but I think all the jumping onto the bandwagon was premature. Just wasn’t convinced from the Derby, given how much trouble some others had, that he was head and shoulders above. I don’t think there’s an American Pharoah in this bunch; I look forward to seeing some great races as they beat each other all year.

And I hit the exacta. Well, I had it backwards, because I thought CE would win and Cloud Computing get up for second, but I did box those two, so it still paid. A nice day for this low-level, purely for fun bettor.

Yes it was a nice clean race. Going into the far turn with mild fractions, I thought for sure it would be a battle between AD & CE to the wire. Never expected AD to stop that hard.

HUGE congrats to CC’s whole team. They sure made the right call for their horse, skipping the Derby & going straight to the Preakness.

I was hoping for a better outcome for CMM. I think he as the potential to be a nice horse, just a bit green still & needs a better jockey.

It’ll be interesting to see who goes to Belmont & who stays home.

Nice race. Sure looked like CE wore AD down but Cloud Computing had plenty in the tank with a nice trip.

If I’d been betting, I’d have boxed CC and LAL so I would have been close

Like so many other Preakness’: 1976. Jockeys of Bold Forbes an Honest Pleasure pretty much match raced they selves out of winning.

I saw a quote from the trainer of CE that this absolutely was HIS strategy (not the jockey’s). He wanted CE glued to AD from the gate. The jockey was following orders precisely. I really think it was a good strategy, too, in this case. If AD had been left alone for another easy trip instead of being pressured from the git-go, that could have changed the result for him.

I think CE showed a lot of heart and class in that race. He tried his guts out and simply got outran at end. I’m pretty convinced now that he’s at the top of the 3 year old class.
