2022 Foal Watch?

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Bee had a solid bay, very tall, colt at 2am. Dystocia delivery with a deflected head, but both are healthy and doing well. Bee is being a wonderful Mom. Vet will be back later this morning to check both again.

No baby from Delia yet but we are getting closer. This morning I found what appears to be what was left of her her mucus plug on the back of her tail bone. She is still eating like a horse who never gets fed but is very agitated. Her udder is full but there hasn’t been any waxing yet and she is rather pissy about me expressing anything unless there is warm water involved so I haven’t been testing her. A couple of days ago I expressed cloudy yellowish liquid and it had a PH of 8. I’m going to try to test her tonight while she is eating. I have her out with an very old gelding who used to be the pasture buddy to my old brood mare in a paddock that I have a camera on and can see the entire field. They are normally attached at the hip but he is keeping his distance. He is an old hand at this and loves being grumpy and playing with the babies but I have found that when the mare he is with is close he keeps his distance. This might be his last foal to watch over as he is 30 this year and isn’t getting around as well as he used to and did not fair very well over the winter as he can’t really eat hay. He does okay on grass most of the time. Husband bought a bottle of champagne this weekend and said this is for when the baby is born. I think he is watching the cameras more than I am. It is nice to have a supportive partner in crime. Here she is chowing down on breakfast this morning while I cleaned her stall.

Love her! Is this the same mare we followed on the foal thread last year?

Ooooh, boy! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Are @Sparrowette, @cripplecreekfrm, and @Trak_Eventer our next three up? This is such an exciting time of year! I always check this thread first thing every morning and again in the evening.

Next year I think someone needs to create us a running list of 340 day ā€œdueā€ dates and keep it updated with foaling dates, sex, color, etc.

I’ve had a bit of a break, but my last two subjects just came into the barn for nightwatch. Bodacious Barb (in foal to Astern) is 349, and client Hano mare Ramiro’s Magic (in foal to Sea Lion) is 331. Both are huge, and udders are getting full. Barb is very slack across her croup. Last year Barb went 349 days, Magic about 345.

In other news, it has been a tough year getting mares pregnant. Between here and KY, we have 7 in foal for next year, out of 15 that have been covered; with two of those due to be checked this week. Two others were in foal, but lost before 40 days. One is now on her 3rd try. The stud farms say we aren’t alone…it has been an unusually difficult year for many mares.

A pleasant surprise, Her Special Way is in foal to Saketini on her foal heat cover. Surprising, as the vet said empty at 16 days, but saw a healthy heartbeat at 35 days when I was frustrated she hadn’t teased back in!
