2022 Foal Watch?

I’m sorry, @4horses. Not being entirely confident in your vet doesn’t help your stress level at all in a situation like that. If it makes you feel any better, a friend of mine had a maiden mare foal last week after dripping milk for almost two weeks. She was able to find frozen colostrum locally to give the foal, but he still ended up with an IgG under 400 and had to receive plasma.

I would probably go ahead and order milk replacer in your situation. I tend to err on the cautious side. Hopefully the treatment will bring her milk in, but, if not, at least you’ll be prepared.

My foal was tubed with quality colostrum almost immediately after birth at the hospital and still had an IgG of 150. Then she received 2 units of plasma, which put her IgG up over 1000, yet here we are 3 weeks later with a mystery infection that quickly progressed to lameness even though we intervened before the foal was ever really sick.

So don’t beat yourself up @4horses. I think I’m proof that sometimes sh*t just happened regardless.

Chewy sells the milk replacer. I bought foal starter from them. It was cheaper than my feed store with free shipping and arrived in 2 days.

Jingles and hugs for everbody! C’mon, little ones & mamas, hang in there!  :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers:

Gosh, so sorry to hear of the struggles. I hope everyone improves soon and it is easier going from here!

I haven’t heard much but I’m assuming no news is good news at this point with my crew. Anxiously awaiting my mare’s pregnancy check and hoping mom and baby can come home soon!

I’ve been watching and following this thread for the past few days. Jingles to the sick foals and I wish them a speedy recovery!

My lease mare is about 320 days now and was just checked over by the vet. All looks good and I’ve shipped a blanket and some halter for the little one when they decide to appear. She’s about 2hr away from me so I will miss when its born and I wanted to make sure the foal has everything they may need when it arrives.

Counting down the days…the last foal she has was 1 week late and her first was 1 week early so she usually foals around her due date which is the beginning of June.

@4horses and @Texarkana, I’m so sorry for your problems. :frowning:

Sending jingles your way!

He is looking much better today. The plasma has helped. The vet thinks I can take him home Saturday if he continues to improve.

Great news @4horses! And it sounds like he will be home before my girl. The update was very positive on her today but they want to keep her on aggressive antibiotics through Sunday.

My young mare checked open at her 15 day ultrasound today. :frowning: But she’s coming back into heat, and things look much more “textbook” than last cycle, with no fluid this time. So hopefully our second attempt this week does the trick! Fingers crossed that the semen looks a little better this time around, too.

The vet commented that her dam, who is at 291 days today, looks like she’s carrying triplets. :joy:

Not in foal here either :(. Everything looked great the first time so I’m nervous now that it isn’t going to work. Vet wants to do a culture so maybe we’ll get an answer from that. Disappointing and I really wanted to bring everyone home. They are getting good care but not the handling I would like with this year’s foal, or the turnout. Here’s to hoping it works this time, otherwise I’m not sure what I’ll do. It’s a three dose contract but I don’t know if it will make sense to try a third time with the costs and other challenges.

I’m sorry to hear that, @weixiao. Here’s to better luck for both of us this time around!

I’m glad to hear that the sick ones are improving. My little one is almost a week old. She is doing well. very active and personable. I’m not sure that I have had a foal that is more personable and just loves to soak up attention. Momma has maintained pretty well and seems to have bounced back and taken on motherhood like a champ. Here she is out on a stroll with momma.

Hey everyone!

So sorry to hear about the sick babies… :cold_sweat: I hope everyone gets better really soon!!!

My girlie is at 325 today - croup is sunken and jiggly, chacha is longer and looser, udder development started a couple of weeks ago. I can easily express liquid from both teats right now but it’s golden yellow and sticky, so she’s not too close. Thankfully she’s a doll for any and all attention and thoroughly enjoyed the udder wash with a warm towel on Sunday night, lol. I am hoping for some warm weather this week so i can give her a nice lukewarm bath and clean her up. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

What precious babies! I can’t wait for the next wave.

My foal is heading back to the hospital today. She seems to have everyone stumped because they can’t find the infection. They sent her home on oral antibiotics on Sunday hoping she would continue to improve, but instead she crashed. After all this (and I mean ALL of this rollercoaster ride), the prognosis is now looking very bleak. If you have any spare jingles she could sure use them.

I’m so sorry. What a shame the vets can’t figure out what’s wrong.
