You’ll have to search to find any mention of the FG Oaks, but Echo Zulu barely managed to keep her perfect record intact, edging Hidden Connection by a nose. Rosario rode her conservatively and I suspect she needed the race.

I’m not racing literate. What does “she needed a race” mean?
When a horse is coming back from a layoff - could be due to injury or they just needed some R&R after a busy racing schedule - sometimes they’ll take a race or two to get back in the swing of things, so to speak. They “need” the physical and mental push as part of their conditioning to set them up for bigger efforts down the line. You won’t see a horse like Echo Zulu being asked to work at anything like race pace for a mile and a sixteenth.
This was her first race back after winning the BC Juvenile Fillies. I imagine the long time off was to allow her to grow up a little.
White Abarrio wins the Florida Derby.
Charge It was a game, if extremely green, 2nd.
Classic Causeway backed up fast, wasn’t pressed. Hopefully he comes out of it ok.
Tiz the Bomb wins the Jeff Ruby Steaks
Arkansas Derby didn’t go at all how I expected it.
Very bunched for much of it.
Nice run for Secret Oath to hold on for 3rd.
CyberKnife comes up with the win, Barber Road 2nd.
This is shaping up to be a very exciting Derby with a quality field.
Nice to see Whisper Hill’s incredibly well bred colt Charge It, do well.
He is a looker, too. I don’t know if you caught the spot on TVG where they mentioned that he’s “all boy and a little ornery”. Translation: he’s studdish and wears his handlers out. We saw some of the “ornery” at the gate.
Yes, his Dam line is not full of delicate flowers.
I agree, he is a very handsome boy. I think Ms. Pope paid 2M + for his Dam.
Apparently Baffert/Brisset’s trainee We The People is a difficult horse to ride and manage. They refer to him as “sometimes aggressive”.

He should be a fun one to watch, once he figures this whole racing thing out.
Candy Raid made a huge last to first move to score 50 points towards the Oaks.

Think Spendthrift maybe wishes they’d hung onto Race Day for another season or two?
Re Secret Oath - it seemed that she didnt have the best break and got squeezed back - not in a way to raise objection, but enough to put her in an unfavorable place. Given her huge move later in race I cant help wonder what the result would have been had she had less ground to make up. Dunno, but she’s a nice filly for sure.
Looking forward to racing on Saturday.
