I was wondering about him, what a nice horse. He had a busy weekend!
Makes me want to go back and rewatch the after-race sequences to see how he handles the young 'uns.
I want that palomino!!! He is beautiful.
Dutrow knows people are waiting for him to slip up. I’d feel safe assuming that, at least for now, he’s got a clean barn.
Not sure how accurate but it lists violations-- the ones listed seemed to indicate a mix with a lot of them how he was conducting his business and his personal behavior vs horse medication violations–like someone with alcohol/drug dependency issues…?
Paulick Report does a good summary:
The Pegasus World Cup (joke of a name as there’s nothing “World” about it) is an abomination dreamed up by Frank Stronach, who wanted the world’s richest race to be run at his track, Gulfstream Park. He kicked the G1 Donn Handicap, run in January, off the schedule to make room for his new baby, which came complete with an eye-searingly ugly monstrosity of a statue.
In its original incarnation, which had a $12 million purse, people bought spots in the gate for $1mil each, rather than nominating a horse as is usual. Arrogate was the winner, beating a weary California Chrome. The second year the purse was $16 million and Gun Runner was the winner. The purse has declined since then and now it’s $3 million.
Stronach really thought he’d draw Breeders’ Cup quality fields of older horses. He didn’t. European and Japanese runners are usually in the barn for much of January and those owners weren’t interested in shipping to the US for one race. And even though he was able to convince the graded stakes committee to give it G1 status from the start (usually a race has to be run a minimum of 2 consecutive years to be eligible for Graded status), I don’t think he expected it to be a swan song for older horses who would go right to stud after their run in the Pegasus. Arrogate didn’t, but it’s sort of the norm now after Gun Runner took home the big prize in 2018 and transitioned into a busy breeding schedule immediately after.
I disliked the Big Brown era Dutrow because I found him obnoxious. However most of what he was accused of was sloppy paperwork. It is absolutely the case that he objected (as was his right) to a reasonable suspension (30 days sticks in my mind) and the response from the powers that be was “You don’t like that-let’s make it 10 years”. No other jurisdiction would have done that but once it was done, everyone else had to go along with it. Appalling even if you don’t like him.
The other thing that I always find a little amusing is the fact that he is such a cause celebre among the people who hate racing and count breakdowns. I’m sure there were one or two in his career but Dutrow was famous for being the consummate horseman and almost never having them break down on the track. That just didn’t happen to Rick and his horses always looked stellar --and now do again.
I was not aware that Dutrow had a low breakdown rate. Mostly what I recall was all the fuss over Dutrow’s admission that most of his horses were given Winstrol, which, it’s important to note, was not on the list of banned substances at the time.
Thank you for telling me about it.
I knew so little about it that until maybe last year I’d thought it was run in Dubai.
Thank you for telling me this. I guess his 10-year absence is why I didn’t remember his name.
Cody of Cody’s Wish fame passed away on his way home from the Breeder’s Cup. It’s as if the colt’s racing career and his life were literally entwined. Godspeed Cody.
Story here:
This is so sad. So happy that he was able to be there for Cody’s last win. This was probably the most positive story of the Breeder’s Cup. My heart goes out to his family. RIP Cody.
My heart goes out to Cody’s family; but what story that he was able to see the horse’s last race as a breeder’s cup winner.
Agree with this 100%
Hollywood could not write this script. I wish it had a happier ending, but I also knew this day would come given the nature of Cody Dorman’s condition.
You couldn’t follow this story and not be a better person for it.
I see that at the end of the BH article there is information about donating to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I’m in.
Disgusted. And at the owners for moving the horse from one cheater to an even worse one. Better winning through chemistry
Just saw via Spendthrift farm’s tiktok page:
“Richard Mandella has informed us that Tamara came out of the Breeders’ Cup with a small fracture of the splint bone in her left hind leg that will not require surgery. She will get some much deserved rest as she recovers.”
Godspeed Cody Dorman.
Come on. Do you really think Dutrow sat on the sidelines for a DECADE only to drug horses as soon as he got back? With the advances in testing and HISA?
