2024 Olympics - Eventing

It rode much better than I had thought it would. Very nice to see so few not come home, and most be able to present and pass the jog on SJ day. Hats off to the course designers!

Adding to the obvious:

When’s the last time Michael Jung rode in a 5 star? Most of the top Germans don’t anymore. Luhmuhlen is usually a handful of German rookies and a bunch of Brit and Irish riders with a smattering of French folks. Meanwhile, the 4 star seems to have every German resident entered regardless if they have ever ridden a horse the field is so big.

Condensing the entire field into 1 day with 4 minute dressage tests sure would save some money…

And after 2028, how many CCI-L events do you think we will see anymore? Everyone will be running XC last.

Hello, I have xfinity (the cheapest option) and for some unknown and unknowable reason, I have burned through ALL my data usage. Even Xfinity can’t tell me why. Adding Peacock to my channel lineup uses data! It doesn’t appear that NBC is showing any equestrian. Any ideas or shall I just forget watching? Thanks.

I thought both the XC and the SJ courses rode smoothly and well, for the riders who approached it with the best rides.

Both did have features that asked the riders to make decisions. Especially on XC, some interesting combinations, and to ride well from shadow to light, and vice versa. But fair questions as most pairs did them well.

Noor Slaoui was exciting to watch! Such a lovely sympathetic rider, the horse looked as if he would do anything for her. I hope we see her again in some championship level events.

It was so much fun to watch the combined oldest pair (I think), Wundermaske zipping around with Ronald Zabala! Such zest! Too bad the horse caught a toe on the log into water and dumped Ronald in the lake, glad they were both ok.

I am so in awe of Julia K’s riding skill! The German team is extraordinarily lucky to have her and Jung both. Their rides are exceptional to watch, IMO. And the team has a lot more talent to choose from as well.

Anyone have an update on the condition of Mauel Graves or his horse, Carat De Bremoy?
They had a nasty fall at the 3rd fence.

someone upthread said her husband read Portuguese, and looked him up. He is OK. Horse is OK.

It looked truly awful. But both were up and walking very quickly.

Glad to hear that horse & rider have come out of it ok.

Read somewhere that rider has a broken collarbone and some kind of shoulder damage but otherwise ok.

If you go here (https://www.nbcolympics.com/schedule) and filter on “TV Only”, you’ll be able to see when the equestrian events will be on TV (assuming you’re currently unable to continue to stream).

Also, I would recommend checking to see if AT&T fiber is available in your area. A few years ago, Comcast/Xfinity switched to implementing data caps which made using their internet services even more terrible. If AT&T fiber is available where you are, you should be able to get unlimited data for around $80 a month.

Some great individual performances this year.

But as I say every Olympic cycle, eventing should have left the Olympics in 2004. Athens was the beginning of the sport’s downfall. I hate the format changes. Go back to 96 and 00 with both team and individual riders when it was the best in the world, not a participation event, and the sport was correctly weighted among all phases (dressage, endurance day, SJ, and 3 horse inspections).

If you have the USA channel, that was showing the cross country portion but Peacock is streaming all of the equestrian events so maybe you should just accept the data charges, the show jumping will be over by next Tuesday and then you could cancel Peacock.

@Carried_Away At FEI level the Ground Jury makes the call and it can’t be challenged, regardless of the qualifications of the persons making that challenge. They also only use evidence from official cameras on the field of play. However, the usual informal rule is that where there is doubt, the benefit is given to the competitor.

For the person whose post I’ve lost, in the USA one might say “rookie” but in the UK one might say “debutante” and either time the rider is having a first go. One language, two peoples (and then add in all the multiples of other varieties of English.)

This reminds me, someone here posted that they were able to stream Peacock at no additional charge through their Verizon account, another possible option.

He contested (and won) the Kentucky 5 star with fischerChipmunk in 2022, and contested and finished 5th (with a pin) in the Luhmuhlen 5 star with fischerWild Wave in 2021. Other than that, not since the Sam/Rocana days (2018).

[With their Olympic team horses]: Sandra was at Kentucky in 2023, and Calvin (traveling reserve for Germany) was at Kentucky this year. Christoph’s horse did Luhmuhlen 2021 and Badminton 2022 (and started but withdrew before xc at Pau 2020).

Julia never did a 5* with Amande de B’Neville, but I think that was due to fragility more than strategy - she stated in a few interviews that she was targeting Burghley, though she unfortunately never made it there. I think it’s too soon to say if Nickel will do a 5 star, because he’s only 10 and has only been seriously eventing for two years.

I actually don’t disagree with you on the broader point that we don’t often see the Germans at 5 star, but I thought it was interesting to note that when you go through their records, all of the German A Team have still contested or aimed to contest 5 stars with their top horses. They do it more sparingly than the other nations, and oddly often do it at an “away 5 star” instead of the one in their home country, but they do prove out the horses at that level.

Secretly I must admit I don’t actually mind this part (minus the wild scoring changes over the course of the day). Sacrilegious, I know…

Yeah, this proposed format change is beyond infuriating. I absolutely hate it and even thinking about it for more than a minute makes me want to put my head through a desk. Horrible.

I should have clarified, I meant that the team vet should help the rider determine whether or not the horse should be presented at the inspection.

Phillip was checked out by the on grounds medics before he rode again. You don’t get a choice about that.

Thank you! I just couldn’t make sense of that on screen but it makes so much more sense.

First of all, I 100% agree with everything else in your post. But, for the sake of conversation, I’m going to poke at this a bit. Disclaimer, I am in the “we absolutely must stay in the Olympics” camp.

We don’t get to see the world’s best in short format. Aachen is the only exception and it’s usually the competition where we see cross-country have the most influence. A clear inside the time in Aachen on a 30-32 dressage and clear SJ is on the podium, maybe even winning. I just don’t think the entries or the results would be that different over a short format at the Olympics, if that’s the compromise to stay in.

My question, is sheer endurance something that we really want to (or should) test anymore?
