It’s a colt! Mare foaled standing up. Still waiting on the mare to pass the rest of the placenta.
Congratulations!
Her water broke around 5:30am. When the amnion presented I had a scare as I had one front foot facing up, instead of down. I reached in and felt and the knees were also facing the wrong way. Couldn’t seem to find the head… I got her up and walked her, while I started phoning the vet. I finally reached someone just as we approached the trailer. I said let me check the foals position as it seemed like the feet were rotating as we walked. At this point we had 2 feet and no head. I reached in and found the head, and as soon as I found the head, the baby started sliding out.
Whoa!! You must have been so relieved!
Well, hello, little man! . You certainly know how to make an entrance
@4horses whoa, good job and quick thinking!! So glad to see the little man arrived safe n sound!!
Arya is at 340 today. Still nothing. Milk still looks like lemonade and testing at 7.6 pH.
Might want to keep testing that pH. My mares milk was completely clear at midnight and pH was 7.0 and then her water broke at 5:30am. So in just a couple hours that pH can drop and their milk can change from clear to white.
For those of you that are experienced breeders:
What post foaling discharge is normal? When does it typically start? Would it be normal not to have discharge? My mare foaled yesterday morning and is on antibiotics and banamine because she did retain the placenta longer then normal. She was flushed yesterday and has not had any discharge today.
I remember the last time she foaled she had quite a bit of discharge. Not sure if I should be concerned by the lack of discharge?
I tend to worry, and having her on banamine makes me even more worried that I might miss something that is amiss. Her temperature is normal and she’s eating and acting normally.
Discharge is normal, it can be pretty gunky and gross looking even if you lavage, and may continue for several days. Movement helps them to push it out, and ask your vet about giving additional oxytocin IM to help her clean out. I dont know that I’d want her on banamine long term if shes not painful, are you taking her temp daily ?
Yes twice daily
I’ve never noticed any discharge post-foaling from any of mine - however, i’ve also never had one retain the placenta (in whole or in part). Mine have always expelled everything cleanly within an hour of foaling… so that might be related to the lack of discharge on all of them…
Carina made it to day 320. She still looks nothing like a typical placentitis mare and that she is in no hurry to expel the hostage at this point:
Her previous owner says that she “goes way over”, but her description of the last pregnancy sounds a lot like a case of fescue toxicosis to me, so… We’ll see.
Surprise! Anne went out to feed on Thursday morning and found this! A beautiful healthy filly born 2 weeks early. Her dam showed absolutely no signs of impending birth the night before.
Meet Ancan Valkyrie!
Lovely filly!
What an adorable face.
Beautiful filly, @quietann !!
Day 345 over here and absolutely no action… No signs of Arya even being CLOSE to foaling.
I found out today Elvis’s mama colicked earlier this week and did not make it. Little guy is home with a borrowed mom and seems to be doing well, but please keep his human people in your prayers. I know they were so excited for his arrival and looking forward to seeing the mare bloom in her new mom role and possibly come back to work later. As if our barn needed more tragedy this year…
I do not think she’s going to have the “little tippy Morgan ears” that some breeders prize. She looks more like she’ll have big ol’ mare ears when she grows up.
Oh man she is cute!!
