26 Welsh ponies in danger in Michigan

Wow, you’re such a peach. For one, how are you qualified to speak for every kill buyer or slaughter house on earth? Your logic is flawed and you’re quite frankly uninformed about what the purpose of people discussing which ponies they want is. Is your only point on this forum to advertise this other forum in your signature? Looks like it to me and it’s extremely tacky.
Um yeah…like I want this bunch on this thread over there, LOL. I’ve been a member here for almost 5 years. Get over yourself. If you want to talk tacky read this whole thread like I just did…have you picked up a phone yet?

Now if you’ll notice I normally step in and give my opinion and leave, which I’m doing now (yay for you!) but this is just another fine example of false information being slung around and people getting hysterical over nothing.

I have nothing to “get over myself” about thanks!

Great explanation Lori from Sunkissed. And you are so right, making sure each pony gets a home instead of a long ride to some plant for processing is the important thing. Plus, coordinating who is already going to be bid for doesn’t prevent anyone from getting their favorite, it just allows people to make sure everyone finds a home.

still want to know why the one pony is deemed a crypt? ANYONE?? what proof is there???
SSFL, has it occurred to you that you also have no proof the pony is NOT cryptorchid? If you are so certain this pony is not a cryptorchid, you are certainly welcome to buy him. You will have a leg up on other bidders.

In the meantime, I think it is important information for potential bidders to know.

I am a legitmate rescue who does not buy horses at auction. Not that I dont want to but I cant afford it and I know myself well enough to know, I will buy the three legged horse that will never be adopted. Not conducive to continue operations but that is where my heart lies. I have bought several horses for peanuts from auctions but only because I was told ahead of time of there being there and they were beyond help. eg, a foal with a broken leg. Not old enough to be weaned but when he broke his leg, they took him to an auction. There he was thrown in with the slaughter bound herd, trying to nurse on mares and geldings alike as he starved to death slowly, dragging along a broken leg. Yes, I bought him and had him euthanized immediately.

But, here is my point. I am a Canadian, I am an animal inspections officer and I worked at auctions and slaughter yards. IF these ponies are bought by Canadian killbuyers, believe me, they will and do go to slaughter. They are paid by the pound no matter what. Yes, if they get a good saddle horse or a desirable, they sell them instead of slaughter them as there is more money in that. Every meat dealer I ever met, had a field of horses for sale, not slaughter. But…unbroke ponies unless they are really fancy, they are meatbound.

Another thing with Canadian kill buyers. They do so buy skinny horses. They put them on pasture and fatten them up. Again, they are paid by the pound. For a lot of the horses, this was the most humane treatment they had received in a long time. Food and lots of it. You see, when the horses are bought in the US, the price is by the pound at time of pickup. So, shippers dont give a hoot how much weight they lose after that. But, in Canada, they are paid by the weight when they get to the plant. Makes a huge difference.

There are a lot of ponies going to an auction where easily a kill buyer could purchase them. They are close enough to the border to make it worth there while. Here in GA, the dealer wouldnt bother coming here which is why most of our auctions are closed. Up north, a different story.

These ponies are at risk and the cothers are simply trying to ensure that they all get a good home instead of taking the wrong road. No harm done. And even if it were rescues attending, often, the Cothers raise the funds for a rescue to go and purchase. Believe it or not, we have a bit more clout. The meat dealers will often give us a break.

I applaud all efforts at the attempt to ensure the end for these ponies is a good one. Be they a rescue who purchases them or a private individual. Some people support rescues who will buy from the auctions and some wont. Its a personal thing. But, I dont know many people who will support a rescue who buys the horses and then sells them for a profit instead of adopting them. Saving horses or ponies always comes with a price be it before hand or after. None of them are free.

I just got Leo for free. hahahahhahah I could not have done half as much for him as has been done without this group of people. And he got a home and a few behind that one. People helped Little Leo as well as his new mommy. He cost every bit as much as these ponies will go for and likely more.

This is simply a good gesture, no harm is meant to anyone, nor is it a bid to keep others from getting the pony of there dreams. This is meant to keep the more undesirables from going the wrong way.
QFT. Thank you.

Yup. It’s a public auction that’s been publicized and widely posted, not a CoTH exclusive.

why have an attitide??

Why the tone to you answer??? there are people on here who seem like they have been informed of the ponies conditions…why should I not ask the reason for calling the pony crypt? I want to know if a vet said it or someone might be assuming based on his behavior which is not unusual. I may bid on him and that is my business but, thanks for the permission  Also, answering a question with a question is not answering a questions. Yes bidders should know but, having accurate info is important hence my original post!

Hmm, very interesting results at the Doodle poll. 1, 7, 15, 19, and 20 have no interest from COTHers at all. Obviously this does not mean that nobody will buy them at auction, but those are NOT the lame/problem/controversial ponies. Not at all what I expected to see.

IHF answered your question several pages back. This is the best information we have.

#20 - Lady in Waiting

If she is in danger, I would buy her and figure out the rest later - LOL! I fell in LOVE with her when I went to the breeder’s web site and now I see she is the one that may have a tooth abscess and has no COTH interested. I sent Holly an e-mail with my cell phone number in case this filly needs to be “rescued.” I do NOT need a pony and I hope she ends up with a good home at the auction. But, I don’t want her going to the KB so I would buy her if that is her only hope. Holly knows me from another horse transaction so hopefully we can make sure this filly ends up in a good place.

Inca,

I left you a message on your cell phone!

Hi

Hello everyone, I am new to this site, just learned about it when I was doing research on these ponies, I was planning on attending the sale this evening and maybe buying one if the prices don’t get crazy. I was wondering if anyone would be able to transport 1 for me to Brooklyn Michigan if I get lucky enough to get one. I will be in the only truck with Arizona plates!

Ps. I would be happy to pay someone to haul for me.

snkstacres, thanks for all you do!

Thinking about ponies and crossing my fingers that they all get great homes!

Hi all - I will be there wearing my bright red Animal Emergency coat!

Leaving now!

I plan on heading out there with my barn manager tonite just to make sure all ponies are safe. We will look for the red. : )

She is on our list…I am not there but, people are for me…I’m sure she will get a good home!

Please post good news for us as soon as technologically possible following the auction!

I am supposed to get calls so I might be able to update people

just got a call from Tiempo, and she said there are a lot of cute ponies there! The palominos are getting a lot of attention, which is nice. The rose grey yearling with the injured leg is also getting a lot of attention, and is very sweet. She also said there was a cute chocolate pony that was very sweet!

I am not sure that any of these will be in our price range, but I can say I know I have a great person looking at them! So thankful!

You guys are great!
