26 Welsh ponies in danger in Michigan

Are you a vet, SkeeterLover? That’d be great!

And WELCOME!

Nice Vet

Yes, I am an equine veterinarian. I have been working with the Humane Society of the United States, the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, and some other anti-slaughter groups to pass the anti-slaughter bill. I’m really hoping that all these ponies find homes. I have been spreading the word by phone (finally remembered by COTH account info!) and hopefully it will work. I am definitely getting one. What time is everyone getting down there?

Quick update…more to come

A number of questions have come up and I am going to try to answer some of them. A complete listing of the ponies has been made and will be posted later tonight after proofreading.

  1. Any sheep people out there? The 2 sheep are Shetland Mini sheep…really really cute little hairballs of unknown age or sex, but small enough that they can easily be manhandled. Haven’t been shorn for aprox 3 seasons. 1 white, 1 black.

  2. A couple of the ponies have issues and we may have to have a COTH intervention to make sure that those get homes where their immediate needs are addressed.
    a. a chestnut pony mare has a hot lump on her face - maybe tooth abscess? It will obviously require a veterinary look and she is pretty unhappy about having it poked at.
    b. a grey pony yearling mare had an injury to a front leg/cornet that required suturing and is going to scar. She is currently on stall rest. It may look a bunch better when her front ski…er hoof is trimmed to look a bit more normal.
    c. the AQHA mare that is beig offered with the ponies has a big L hock but moves sound on it currently.
    d. there is a beautiful pony that is a cryptorchid. He is two, so it is unlikely to come down on it’s own now. Thus, surgery will be required for this boy…which brings us to …

  3. Al of these horses and ponies were in a single pen at the time of seizure. It is likely that at least some of these mares and possibly fillies, were bred by the cryptorchid colt. A repro exam would be a good place to start with any mares purchased - no spring surprises please.

  4. There will be security, so there should not be any concerns about safety. I have seen the court order as well as the restraining orders and the auction house has all of their ducks in a row.

  5. Again, ponies will be auctioned at 9pm. Meet at the Iron Horse Farm trailer at 7:30 to make yourselves known (maybe we can all wear red or something!).

I am a geographical idiot, and have no idea where in MI this is, but I am currently in Michigan at Traverse City and could bring one to Chicago if I’m anywhere near the auction or someone could bring it this way.

Hauling to CA/AZ?

My mother and sister (who live in AZ) would like a pony.

My parents imported Welsh in the 1950s. We bred, raised, showed and sold them all over the place. I told my mother about this amazing COTH intervention yesterday. She talked to my sister, who called just now and said, yes, we think we’d like a pony. They have the barn, equipment, space and knowhow to train one. They still have four ponies on the place, but they’re getting older and so mom and sister are thinking maybe it’s time to increase the herd.

And come to find out, the Michigan ponies share the bloodlines that my family’s ponies had - Coed Coch and Revel, for example.

Are there any left? And if so, what’s the status of the haul to CA? AZ is right on the way.

Let me know what to do next.

Hey, Rendy:

I see you’re new. Welcome!!! You might want to edit your post to remove your e-mail address. People can private message you. No need to put your e-mail out into the world. ;)[/QUOTE]

Thanks…I took care of it !!

I’ve gotten a few PM’s and emails from people re:shipping the ponies south.

So, here is the situation. My DD is pregnant. She lives in Tryon, NC and is due the 27th. I MUST work to support my ponies! So, I am heading back to MI next Monday, working my 6 days (12h nights) and then maybe coming back then. Most likely, I will not come back to Tryon until Aug 11th.

I do have space to keep ponies at my farm for a short time. Board would be very little, and all I would ask in addition is that you call my vet with a CC if your pony needed attention.

I have a 2 horse featherlite that I can remove the partition in and get ponies down that way. IF that is not enough, I can probably convince my DH to haul the 4 horse down- and there is also a 3 h slant stock that would work, too, that I could probably get. IOW, we can get them down here for a nominal amount of money.

I would, however, need them picked up in Tryon, or there abouts. I come down 75-40-26- which is thru Knoxville.

If anyone is interested, and has someone to bid for them, great. We can make it work! PM me and we’ll start figuring things out.

Is anyone going from Ontario?
I don’t need another pony but I have space for one. If someone is could they please e-mail me as I would need shipping and someone to bid for me!

Below is a link to an album with a catalog and photos of the available ponies. This information is correct to the best of my knowledge but is not guaranteed. There are three ponies with marking so similar it was impossible to differentiate them by photo.

Please note that while the ponies were generally friendly and easy to handle, none of them are broke to ride, and some are only minimally broke to halter. The ponies will be best served if they are purchased by experienced people who intend to train them so they will be less likely to ever find themselves in such a situation again.

As IHF mentioned, there are a few ponies with special needs that we would like to ensure get medical care. Perhaps people who would like to help would consider helping to defray those costs.

The ratio of interested people to ponies is very promising right now. Please check the linked message board above for updates and information.

PLEASE NOTE: The ponies are generally friendly and easy to handle, but have had minimal training. Some are not even well-halter broke; NONE OF THEM ARE BROKE TO RIDE OR DRIVE. THESE PONIES WOULD BE BEST SERVED IF THEY WERE PURCHASED BY SOMEONE EXPERIENCED WITH HANDLING AND TRAINING YOUNG HORSES.

The auction is at
United Producers
9610 Mi State Road 52
Manchester, MI 48158
734-428-8352
Saturday, July 18
Tack is 6-9 pm.
Ponies promptly at 9 pm.

There are 26 welsh and welsh cross ponies, one horse, and two Shetland sheep.
There will also be tack, harnesses, carts, and farm equipment for sale.
It is a no reserve, all-sells auction.

The ponies are in good weight, have current Coggins and tetanus, and were recently wormed. They will have farrier work prior to the sale.

NOTE: There are three ponies that will require medical care, and two that have blemishes that do not limit their soundness. We want to be sure that these ponies also find good homes. Anyone who is interested in these “special-needs” ponies should try to meet at the Iron Horse Farm trailer in the parking lot at 7:30 pm, so that would-be rescuers are not bidding against one another.

Can you elaborate at all on #25’s eye? Is the eyeball still there, or is it gone? Just very damaged? Or?

I didn’t get a good look, perhaps IHF did and can correct me, but I believe it is gone.

I just identified her on the Palustrine broodmare page – unless they have/had another one eyed grey mare, she would be foaled in 2000 and her name is Palustrine Promise of Hope.

Those pictures did not help my DH’s cause! they are just BEAUTIFUL!!

Gosh, any one of them could live in my barn! Love Love love 14, 3, 5 and 6 and 12…

We were told that it is just gone and that there is no evidence of surgical repair or any kind of restructuring. It is not smooth like she was born without it.

#14 is the one who looks just like my boy- whoever gets her please post an update!

If we do, we sure will!

16 is stunning, too- has hunter pony written all over her~

Don’t suppose anyone just happens to be coming toward TX?

Wow I wish I wasn’t about to go away to college…#11 and #14 would be welcome at my house! you would just have to get them here to VA before my mom got home from her trip haha

As someone else stated I think most these ponies will get homes.

I really hope people don’t outbid others just because.

I know Koda and will bid for him as high as necessary as he is full brother to a pony I purchased in the past. I hope I do not have to pay more then a fair amount as there are many ponies who need homes and this just limits the ability to save a few

again, i think a list of who wants what would be helpful

we are bidding on
18 Koda
and we like 16, 22, 11 and a few others

thanks to all

We are in KS and there is no way I can get up there or even get monies sent out until Monday, but i would be more then willing to bring some in to go into full training and help place them in good loving and or show homes. I had a pony from these lines a few years ago that was a super pony!
