A cold day in hell before they take our horses - NYC carriage press conference

I finally looked at the anti pages. It makes me wonder about many things. Maybe it is just me but I think that there is a real lack of people who understand that everything is not black or white or right or wrong in this world. There are more than one way to do the same thing and get same outcomes. The way you do something is not inherently right. In all aspects of life I have noticed that people seem so much more “my way or the highway” these days. Of course there are some things that are WRONG. But in this discussion of animals you then combine that “no shades of gray” leaning with anthropomorphism and you get the “he is ready to drop…I can see in his eyes how abused he is…he can’t even lay down to rest” posts.
It is obvious to me that the moderators of these pages are happy to let people draw poor conclusions and they in turn readily post contradictory information to get the most comments. There are pictures captioned about horses not being “tethered” ("cruel, inhumane, terrible human not to be holding horse) next to posts with horses tied ("cruel, inhumane, terrible human to be holding/tying horse). It is cruel to have halters under bridles, yet cruel to tie them or not tie them. (Maybe tethering is not cruel but tying is? )Cruel to have them eat with bits but cruel to have them not eat. I can’t imagine the outcry if someone unbridled and a horse was pictured in that process. Drivers are berated for decorating with plumes and flowers and then everyone oohs and ahs over a picture posted of a horse wearing a wreath and bunny ears. Protesters are shown with their dogs laying directly on concrete but object to the horses standing on it. And then they think the correlation is not valid because the horses live in stall but not pastures. They claim that it is ok because the dogs live in luxury in their houses/apartments but never think how “happy” dogs would be living outside on 200 acres. I know I have some farm dogs who would not adapt to city living at all. LOL. I do not object to dogs in the city- ones who have adapted to it. I do think that there are some breeds who adapt better than others to either farm or city conditions. Works both ways.

They cannot seem to understand that horses can adapt as well.

Or as has been stated the people running the show don’t want horses in the city at all no matter what or how they are treated nor do they want any animals to be used for any purpose. They are more than happy to let people jump up for them with less than those views or who are less than knowledgeable about animals.
UGH

You nailed it Rosymare! Damned if you do damned if you don’t!

Oh… and you forgot the “set them free” and “working out in all weather extremes” paradox.

Excellent post roseymare.

It’s nice to come back to this thread and read a few more thoughtful posts.

The post that mentioned something along the lines of how the owners and drivers shouldn’t have gotten mad or defensive blew my socks off.

A bunch of clueless people propose to ban and then take away their horses (and/or dictate what would happen to them), and they aren’t supposed to get mad about it?

And we’re supposed to believe that the person who made that comment (and those who liked it) would just willingly hand their horse(s) over to some loud and clueless activists?

Thanks again to you and the last few posters who brought the topic back to what I’m sure the original poster had in mind, and best wishes to everyone in the days ahead.

I will be in New York for surgery (long story for another thread) Jan. 9. Surgery isn’t until 1/13. I want to do some sight seeing, health permitting, so maybe we can get a carriage ride while we’re there.

What company and where? Understand I know next to nothing about NY. I do know I’ll be in Long Island, so I might direction. PM me if you prefer to avoid thread drama.

You go to the hack line at the park and hop on. I am not sure about the etiquette though, if you take the first in line or pick your ride…
(I am on my chrome book, the cut and past doesn’t work, but you can look them up on FB: The famous Horse Drawn Carriages of central park)

The carriages work in Central Park which is in Manhattan. The park is beautiful should be on your list of places to visit in NYC if it’s not already. Good luck on your surgery. Please do see the park and take a ride, and then no matter what side of the issue you’re on, you arrived there by real-life experience.

The hack line is on Central Park South, also known as 59th Street,

Here’s video taken yesterday, showing attractive, healthy horses bringing joy to people. The “Grinch” also taking video – looking for anything contrary to regulations – is none other than Liz Forel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWTFoqOdutg&feature=youtu.be[/QUOTE]
What a sad bitter lonely person she seems to be. She need to get a life.

Hack line is near the Plaza “Hotel”. Used to be a hotel, now a condo I think.
Any cab driver should know “take me to the Plaza hotel”.

Yes, or just say “Central Park South” or Grand Army Plaza.

I hear her cat loves her…but then again, the poor enslaved soul has no option to interview other staff…

Am going to NYC in January & plan to take a ride…any other way to show support for the carriages?

Looked up the Trip Advisor forums on the carriage ride question out of curiosity. They have some posters designated as “destination experts” for locations.

At least 2 of the NYC Destination Experts are on the forums peddling the cruelty line - horses not well maintained, horses hit by cars and put down every year, horses out when it’s too cold/hot, and the popular “locals don’t support this.”

Oh good grief, anybody can be a trip advisor expert. That asked me to do it based on a single hotel stay in Nashville. Somebody just needs to te
L them the anti carriage posts are inaccurate.

Visit the Famous Carriages Horse-Drawn Carriages of Central Park on FB. Perhaps you could arrange a stable tour.
