A little scary to be watching TVG and hearing this

Watched the last race at Del Mar yesterday (9/2) just as Todd Schrupp and Simon Bray were finishing up their on-air broadcast when you could hear something (hard for me to identify over the air as it happened), Todd Schrup exclaimed ‘there’s gunfire at the track, there’s gunfire at the track’ and the on-air part was shifted away from the live Del Mar coverage.

TVG as promptly as they could find out, confirmed that all TVG personnel at Del Mar were okay. Simon and Todd I believe were close to the saddling paddock and the incident took place outside the admission windows.

The suspect fired shots into the air, deputies initially responded with tasers and when that was unsuccessful, opened fire. Suspect is sill hospitalized this morning.

PS - please do not turn this into a political/gun control topic. For me, just scary to have this event caught on live TV.

I got a text when it happened and turned on TVG–only to find out that they were showing anything but DMR. The only update I heard (10-15 minutes later) was that their news anchors were fine. Disappointing coverage to say the least.

Oh my! Sorry you had to catch that on live TV

I just read about a shooting that took place at Del Mar because there were no more tickets for an Ice Cube concert there. Is that what you heard?

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/del-mar…ay-2018-09-02/

At the time it was broadcast, all TVG said was that there appeared to have been a shooting (other than the comments from Todd S at the time of the shooting) and that all TVG staff on site were safe and ok.

LaurieB, I kept checking back in with TVG to see if they’d say more but I actually was impressed at their restraint in not continued to broadcast more about the incident when nothing more was really known.

I got a bit more from CBS8 who were also wrong in their initial reports in saying that the suspect has been tasered (true) and killed (false).

TVG as soon as Todd reported the gunfire dropped live Del Mar coverage and did not go back. They did continue to report either in studio or the on-air at Los Al that all TVG staff were okay but very little else.

Even this morning all TVG read was the press release from the Sheriff’s Office but nothing from their on-site personalities. Will be interesting to see (if I catch it) what the Del Mar on-site guys (Todd, Simon) say. Joaquin Jaime did not say very much this morning when he went live on-air at Del Mar other than TVG has had a 19 year relationship with Del Mar and he anticipates that will last another 19 years.

While I initially wanted more info on what happened and given that CBS8 reported some information incorrectly, I think TVG did the right thing and didn’t say anything more other than the status of their staff.

Scary for sure. Not actually much to see as both Todd and Simon were on camera in their ‘booth’ and as soon as Todd reported the gunfire at the track, the live feed cut away pretty quickly.

I’m not surprised there was not much to see, but there is a difference between reading about it and hearing it on live tv

Yes, that is true… in the BH article I think it was, Simon said he dived for one of the stalls in the saddling area. I can’t being to imagine the mental panic of anyone upon hearing gunshots in a place you don’t expect.

Can I cross post this? This has some interesting levels for discussion?

I was watching TVG when it happened. Before the race, there were some people getting loud and rowdy in the tunnel close to where the TVG tent is usually put up and you tell that Todd and Simon were a little uneasy. This is not your typical racetrack audience. Then the race was in the stretch and Trevor said “Ohhh” which you never want to hear, then “a horse lost the rider”. Right after that was the “shots fired!” exclamation by Todd Schrup and honestly the first thing that came to my mind is that a jockey was targeted by a shooter–which is something right out of Dick Francis.

The whole thing is just bizarre. He had to be higher than a kite to do that and thank goodness, he was the only one shot. It is amazing that he wasn’t killed.

@Pronzini that is horrible. I get wanting to appeal to the masses for racing, but when I watch the Kentucky Derby and see concerts and drunk coeds outside the immediate racing venue ugh… and now this.

That’s what happens when you allow rap fans at a venue that’s supposed to serve racing fans. Because it was a rap fan, not a racing fan, who brought the gun and did the shooting.

Sure, as long as you bear in mind my purpose in posting was hearing this live and then trying to find out more info (ie, not a political/gun control post knowing I can’t control what others do with it).

a) Del Mar, as many other tracks, are doing their best to attract people and concerts are one way to do that.

b) There is, in my eyes, no excuse for anyone, regardless of what type of fan they are, to do what this individual did.

Of course. I used the article. Not your words. So not really a cross post.

Pronzini, I saw the horse spook during the stretch run but I’m not convinced it was because of any sounds it might have heard. The incident was outside the main gate so the whole grandstand to help buffer the noise. I don’t have actual live timing (as I am sure anything broadcast on TVG has at least a few second delay) but it appeared to me that the horses were in the gallop out when I heard the sound and Todd’s comments before going off air.

NP - the CBS8 article from this morning was updated from the report last night which was not IIRC correct

It was scary to know there were shots and not know who was the target or if anyone was hurt.

Type of music does play into it though. RPM isn’t totally off base. I remember several summers at one particular venue where there was gun fire, part of the fencing was burned down, many rape cases… my Mom was freaking out about me going to a heavy metal show there. I drew her attention to the fact that all those things happened at the Dave Matthew’s 3 day concerts. We, fellow metal heads and I, contain ourselves to the mosh pit and do not destroy the venue.

That is so sketchy. I remember bringing the mail out when I worked in Hartford, CT and turning back around because the swat team was everywhere. You are left standing wondering what is happening.

Sounded like deputies were already by the front gate as the guy was argumentative with the admission folks because there were no tickets left.

But it is really the type of music or that so many people go to, particularly outdoor concerts, get intoxicated/high and rowdy/dangerous/stupid??

I think there are many types of concerts, particularly outdoors where they are harder to regulate where people consume too much alcohol/drugs and become stupid/dangerous? Heck, I t think even at some sporting events watching intoxicated/high people have scared me with their behavior.

Must have been very scary for those standing by the main gate as it sounded like the gun was fairly visible.
