Riggs – nope, that was a show in Quebec. Though I’d love to ride in BC. I get the feeling the season would be much longer.

I’m certainly no techo-nerd, but can’t you copy the pictures to disk (floppy) and put them on another computer?
or email them to yourself and download them on another computer?

LOL, Coreene! I had a friend who used to pack a sandwich in the spring before Upperville (the first appointments class we did each year)and take it out in the fall after the Garden.
And then there was the infamous incident at North Shore when we’d forgotten to bring a sandwich and the closest thing we could find on the showgrounds was a hot dog that was squished in sideways to fit. Needless to say, the judge was not amused.

Pam, are you somehow related to the Massachusetts Halls? Mary and Norman and Aimee and all the rest? Big racing family, but they did lots of showing as well.
It’s a stretch, I know, as Hall is a fairly common last name…
BTW, I had one of those evile, hardmouthed pinto ponies, too. I’ll try to dig out a pic of old Spit-Spot.
A building contrator is defined as someone who wants to build a house in the woods. An environmentalist is one who already owns a house in the woods.
I remember that show. If I recall, Hai Karate won the GP. My friend’s dad sung the National Anthem that night.
Sing Mia Song,
Your pony is far too fancy to be compared to Apache. He is lovely – and at least for that moment in time, he takes a helluva picture.
Another way they are different is that, one thing Apache never did was stop. He was a jumping machine. Now, run away with me, that he did regularly. Looking back, it was sort of sad. Apache and his ilk marked the end of an era. Fortunately, as a kid, I did not realize this, I just loved my pony, he was perfect, iron mouth and all.
But the 50’s was right about when Mrs. Waller of Tanracken Farms started importing all of those incredibly fancy English ponies, such as Welland Valley Early Bird, and I believe that Coed Coach Llewydrew (close?) was one of hers, too. She had probably the very first pony catch rider, Meta Boykin, come up from Virginia to live with her and ride these fancy ponies.
Anyhoo, these English ponies had never jumped, because they didn’t have to jump in the English show ring. But they were the most gorgeous looking and drop dead best moving things that ever set foot on this side of the Atlantic. And they learned to jump pretty darn quick. Once they did, the fat little back yard types like Apache were an anachronism. Nowadays he would make a great pony jumper. It only took 50 years for his type to have a place in the show ring again.

holy cow! I wish I rode like that at 6!

Pam, I’m still willing to take Warren off your hands. As long as his “mystery lamenesses” match up with my “mystery ailments” we’ll live happily ever after.
All of your pics are awesome even if they make me feel inadequate.

that’s what you get for that nasty auto-release.
To demonstrate my lack of knowledge about “dress codes,” I’m struck by the Garden picture showing a hunter wearing a shadbelly and top hat, reminiscent of dressage. When was this the norm? I know Grand Prix jumpers wear this sometimes. Would love an explanation, thanks!
That was wonderful LH! Thanks for sharing that with us. Isn’t it amazing the change in attire. I actually had one of those baby blue bad boys myself . I have to say that it did look quite smashing on the b-e-a-utiful gray! I too curse that wonderful auto-release. Thanks again for sharing!!!

Pam that last photo of you and Valor is absolutely amazing! It is an image of true inspiration to many of us… I think I will wait for this thread to be far off the front page before I decide to post a photo of myself!
You are a beautiful rider!
Just awesome Pam! You have to be so proud… You know, I think you should think about having a book published of your show life with these wonderful horses! Maybe Merry could do the writing?
Those were fun! Thanks LH for sharing. We are the same age, and I remember the elastic helmet straps. My first pair of breeches (from the Salvation Army Store in - then - horsey Santa Barbara) had huge flares and about 15 little buttons up each side to the waist. Also, thanks to perf for the yellow helmet picture!

suzss, no you weren’t the only one with a madras coat.
And before the rest of you youngsters start laughing, remember, this picture was taken in 1968.

I don’t dare laugh. Somewhere in storage, I have that picture from that same year… Except my madras coat was blue based. Light blue, darker stripes in blues greys greens. Think it had the occasional red pinstripe as well. Beige britches with a flare that would have done Hollywood proud.
What great photos! LH - is it bad that I aspire to your 6 year old competence level?!
Perf - put down the helmet cover. Back away from it slowly. Easy does it
Hi Xegeba! My computer is still down, but we got another computer for now. I just got worked like a dog last week and couldn’t slip away to get on the Board. (I didn’t run away to the dismay of some). I think I must know LordHelpus somehow since we seem to have crossed a lot of paths, but I never got to show at the Forum, only the Cow Palace.
What a fantastic thread! I got carried away reading through all this. LH, you had the life I wanted. Can we trade for a week? I just got back into riding a year and a half ago after 20 years off … but you rode at 6 about the highest I’ll ever get! Okay, can someone help me with some of these abbreviations? I understand a GPA is a Grand Prix … ??? There was something else in there I didn’t get but can’t remember it now. I’ll ask later. I’m off to the barn now to see my baby!
