A pictoral timeline of hunter dress codes from the last (gulp!) 50 years. UPDATE: New Pics -- p8

What great pics, LH! Thanks for sharing them! The one at 6 years old just astounds me…

Okay. One…two…three…awwwwwww! I love the pictures, LH, please keep them coming.

One of these years, I expect the two of them [Bruce and Philip] to have their own division at Rolex, and contest it riding cattle. And they’d both still make the time. – Heather

Im pretty certain a few years ago Dover offered a “Hunter” bridle that you could have your initials put in stitching on the noseband. Looked a lot smaller than the one LH showed though. I wanted one so bad.
WAsnt too long ago…10 years maybe?

Great pictures guys!

Awesome thread! LH, that pic of you on the gray looks like a photo out of GM’s Hunter Seat Equitation. Lovely! And George is so gorgeous. If you ever make it to the GA Int’l Horse Park, let me know. I want to pet your horsie.

I still have one of those perky little shirts with the tie. Back in 1958 my father went to DC and brought my mother and me matching ratcatchers. I have in my drawer the one he got for my mother. It is tan with a tiny black boot/whip design. I wore mine in the leadline class in my very first horse show.

Out of curiosity why is it that in a lot of older photos I see like Yourmom’s, why is the horse always pictured landing from the fence instead of the, the “knees up” photos we see today? When did this change?

Me:"…but you said stop after the last fence"
Trainer:" NO, I said TROT after the last fence"

Whee, here’s my evil pinto pony!

Spit-Spot

Okay, you will notice that I am all over the back of the pony and that my hands are floating above the crest in some bizarre affectation. However, please also note the honkin’ stick in my left hand! This pony was quite the stopper in her cranky older years–the kind that leaves the ground in front, then sits down. So, now that she’s decided to leave the ground (in quite stylish fashion), I’m playing catch up. Oh, and BTW, that’s a double twisted wire in her mouth. We left the rubber pelham at home. This time.

I was 12 in this pic–note the age-appropriate attire of the early 80s!

O love the pics Valor is a knee snapper at that… Gotta love those knees, and I agree that you should send the pic to GM of you as a 6 yr old, I would love to read his comments as Im sure others would too…

OMG! YOU have a GPA??? I’m ruined. Time for cocktails…

Thanks HorseyGurl. I do remember going to watch the amateur hunters at the Washington International in the fall. I do remember one woman wearing this, but not all, so I assume it’s optional? What IS the accepted / unaccepted / norm for the ring. I’ll have to get with it if I ever get my nerve up to show again. Thanks!!

Thanks, guys. These themes are fun. I have boxes of pictures — looking through them for ones that showed off clothes, instead of just the best jumping ones, was fun.

But with hundreds of unscanned pictures still unsorted in boxes, I could do pictoral essays categorized by types of jump, indoors v. outdoors, hair down in pageboy v. tucked up under hat — the possibilities are endless (and oh so boring…)

The gray horse who people like so much was my first ammie horse after I took 9 years off (from 18 - 27). He is an appendix QH! Unfortunately, he was 16.3 and had those upright pasterns on tiny little QH feet, and so did not stay sound for very long. But he had a nice life as the babysitter for the yearlings when they were being broken and taken out through the woods in Southern Pines. He was a really nice horse.

Ahhh! I was so born in the wrong generation. No fair!

Thanks LH and everyone else who posted pics!

Peace Out!

LH…thanks for that timeline. Too cool. Loved the Essex Troop photo…gave me flashbacks, although I wasn’t making it over fences at 6! I’ll have to dig through my 70’s and 80’s photos.

The picture of Valor at the Garden is now my wallpaper

I love his expression in that photo. He looks so noble.

All of these are fantastic! Thanks LH!

madeline, wow! I guess times really have changed quite a bit…

If you must choose between two evils, choose the one that you’ve
never tried before.

Oh, Lordy, Lordy, Lordy! I can post on my stand alone for the first time in months! But I have no idea what I did to change anything…

In celebration, I will post a couple more very old pictures that have been stored on this computer for a long time.

First order of business: Valor is a OTTB. In fact, Chanda’s God Mother, Judy Kelly found him at a track in British Columbia, Canada as a two year old, and, somehow, saw the potential in a gangling, huge-headed, not pretty plain bay horse. So she bought him and started him on the road to hunter stardom. One year later, he was sold to the girl who would own him for the next 8 years, until I bought him and owned him for his last 12 years. The amazing thing is that this girl was a good friend of and rode at the same stable as LaurieP from this board. Laurie was at Val’s very first horse show where, evidently, he was a looney.

When I went into training with Joe and Conrad, 10 years after that first show, she was working for them as a grand prix groom. She insisted that she had to groom her old friend Valor. So that is how she groomed both the best and the lowliest horses at Sandron.

Now on to the pictures. The first is my grandmother in 1931. She would have been in her early 40’s then. She last rode a horse in her mid 80’s, and had a lovely time, as I recall.

These are wonderful! LordHelpus, is that an olympic medal?!

Oh Lordhelpus-

How great it is to see your family photos with the horses. I have really loved looking a them. I LOVED SEEING YOU IN A TIE!!! I remember wearing a tie and that little perky bow the ratcatcher shirts came with.

Please!!! Keep the pictures coming!!!
