A pictoral timeline of hunter dress codes from the last (gulp!) 50 years. UPDATE: New Pics -- p8

I sure miss mudknots. They really showed off a horse’s hind end.

But, I digress. I miss the old mud knots. Pure and simple.

I haven’t shown in years and years, but what would happen if someone put their horse’s tail in a mud knot to show? Especially if the weather is lousy?

And I have to say, thank you, thank you, thank you for posting your pictures and your mother’s and grandmother’s pictures. They are fantastic. What a wonderful life with horses you’ve had.

I didn’t start riding until I was in my early 20s (the early 1970s). I have pictures, but nothing to compare to yours. Please post more if you have them.

Although the initials on the nose band is a little much for me, I very much want my next girth to have fancy stitching with the initials!

Riggs,

Yes, there was a perky little bow – It came with the ratcatchers and was actually worn with them until chokers came into fashion. That is why, in the early ratcatchers (before they became “showshirts”) there was a channel in the collar – for the piece of material that turned into the perky little bow to go through.

I am not sure of the purpose for the piece of material. Unless, after you caught your rat, you needed a leash to lead it around with and that long narrow piece of material was just the ticket.

Of course, I and my friends were much tooooo cool to ever use that perky little bow. My mother had several good businesses going to pay for our show expenses. One was stall signs – she made hundreds of them, mostly for the horses at Hilltop. The other was chokers. She specialized in pleated paisley chokers, so I was always well turned out in a wide variety of those awesome accessories.

And, Riggs, I was a member of the rust with powder blue and velvet clique. There is a picture attesting to that fact on p1. I had moved on from my brown field boots with the natty matching brown hunt cap and brown coat with velvet collar/pockets by then. I have a picture of that outfit, but I have my pride and have to draw the line somewhere, no matter how low.

LH/Pam,
thanks!, and your phrasing has me LOL, sounds like something i would say

quote:
I will also repost the Madison Square Garden picture because it tickles me to think that I might be someone else’s wallpaper. I am not even my own wallpaper, so have at it .

not that i’m redeorating or anything, though come to think of it, there are quite a few classic pics that, enlarged, might do wonders in my guest room. wonder if hubby would mind?

Pam, It’s Nicole Bloom. I STILL have those nosebands with the Names/initials stiched in them. I prize them greatly, it’s hard to get TRUE Jimmy’s custom tack anymore.

Great to see all the pics!

Cant help with the comp thing, but I can say that I am logged in on like 3 different computers at all times b/c it remembers my log in info on my computer, as well as my parents and boyfriends.

I second, or third?, the idea of either emailing the pics to yourself and obtaining them on the already logged in computer or saving them to a CD or DISK and transfering them over. I am SO looking forward to more pics!

hahahaha, spotty jump! Those are some great pics LH!

your mom – that picture is so fabulous…

The jump? what?
I’m more impressed to see a 6 year old handling double reins in a jumping class! (it’s not an easy task with little hands)

Wow Pam. I think after I had a picture like the one of Valor at Madison Square Garden I’d just up and retire…cuz it doens’t get better than that… WOWSIEEEE!!!

You should be sooooo proud of your riding and your wonderful horses. Such great accomplishemnts… such great horses.

What a wonderful thread… thanks for sharing.

I’m so inspired I’m going to go out and ride…

Having gotten through the 90’s, I’m back on track in the new century, and am once again stylin’ with peach shirt, gray coat, puke green breeches, black custom field boots and a GPA.

Also, raised bridle, TCPS, and shiney horse.

OK — I finally have figured out how to stand up in my stirrups, jump ahead of the horse, look straight dhown and lean on my hands!

Damn, it only took 5 decades. And they say I am a slow learner.

Xegeba, I think you are right. It was that damned automatic release that did me in. No more of that stuff for me!

[Edited because the first version sounded incredibly pompous when I reread it. ]

Drooling, as usual, during the viewing, Pam.

B***h in training

Pam, thanks for sharing the pictures; I really enjoyed them.

Is that Moolah before or after his WTF years?

Madeline (or anyone else) do you have any other photos from the 30’s (or earlier) through the 50’s? I just love those photos… classic beauty.

One thing I haven’t seen comments on is the solid jump in the second picture. OMGiH, you must be a little tetched in the head like us wacko eventers!

If you want to go back a little further, here is a serious solid fence! Ladies Hunters, Piping Rock, circa 1936. Note the bowler, the jods, and the hound whip and no pad. The hound whip means it’s an appointments class.

Automatic release is there, though.

TH, That was two years before I met you! YOu were just a puppy back then, but one heckuva good riding puppy. And, according to the style of the day, you were the height of fashion! I never had a rolled bridle and was always jealous of people who did. And a red coat with a black velvet collar… Well… I am speechless…

That was Ruby Tuesday, right? (I am not psychic, I saw that the title of the picture was “rubysmall”… )

Do you have any pictures of Taco? I wanna see pictures of Taco!

Perf tell me if I’m wrong, but I do belive that in your last and most recent picture the blue helmet you are riding in is not a cover? Is it one of those funky CO’s?

Me:"…but you said stop after the last fence"
Trainer:" NO, I said TROT after the last fence"

I may have missed it in an earlier thread, but sorry I just have to ask. What is Valor’s breeding? TB? He’s such a lovely, classic hunter in your photos!

My first show when I was just a teen, I wore rust breeches, off white shirt and a hairous tweed jacket and boy did I think I was trendy, mind you that was in the 70’s. No pictures, I wish I did. Now I show in the greenish beige Pytchleys, Navy Jacket and blue/white striped shirt.

Funny huh…

I know Bill Cooney puts his horse’s tails in mud knots when it’s muddy out, and they do just fine
