A real, thin, rain sheet

Does anyone make a real rain sheet any more? Seems like years ago we had sheets that were very light ripstop, great for here in Florida. Not cordura canvas feeling, not lined…! Its just too hard to tell from the ads - I have been fooled and now have two nice sheets that are just not what I wanted…

Don’t know if you’ve ever tried an Amigo Mio Turnout Lite? It’s lightweight, breathable, rain proof. I think it’s 600 denier, just a thin nylon lining. Anywhere between $65- $50 depending on a sale or particular size. I like them.

Yeah, I had an Amigo Hero that was quite thin, but it kept my horse dry.

The Mio is thinner and lighter than the Hero of that helps. Weaver has one listed on Chicks Saddlery and there are a few off brands on Tack of the Day.

That is not what I want. In fact, I have one - I thought it was the right thing. Thanks, tho.

What’s your goal?

Waterproofing while avoiding the toxic PFAs in cordura, denier, and most modern lined sheets?
What kind of weather are you trying to mitigate?

If so, old school waxed canvas might be your best option.

I was going to say - I have an Amigo Mio in pink that is so thin I’m afraid to use it. It’s a back up blanket because it’s so flimsy. Don’t get me wrong it’s a beautiful blanket, and well made - I just imagine my boys would shred it in seconds. I can’t imagine a textile thinner that would still be waterproof. It’s the thinnest and lightest weight rainsheet I own by a mile.

I saw there’s a Rambo “turnout” fly sheet combo. I cannot remember the name but I saw it at Dover. Could that be what you are looking for? It looks like the top / spine side was turnout / rainsheet material while the body and flank looked like mesh. Not sure if that’s something up your alley.

I own this sheet. It’s too light for any weather under 60 here in Ohio but may be what you need. Can’t beat the price either. If this doesn’t work, always good to browse Schneider’s stuff.

I know of what you speak. Back in the day Weatherbeata used to make a very thin but remarkably sturdy completely unlined, water resistant (you would have needed to waterproof them again after several uses and the seam tape failed mightily when it got tired) that we called Smoking Jackets due to their slight sheen and rich colours.

I haven’t seen anything similar in a long time but wonder if buying a summer sheet and waterproofing it yourself may be the ticket.

I had one once, but it’s worn out and I can’t find another. It was a Brookside or something like that, I think from Valley Vet. I loved it. It was not waterproof maybe water resistant. Thin nylon. I loved it because if the ground was damp after a rain, and it was not cold, I could use it as a “mud sheet”. Easier to wash the sheet than the horse! I’ve been looking for a replacement also.

Schneiders has lightweight nylon stable sheets that you could run through a Nikwax bath…would that work?

Other than canvas, I don’t think anything unlined exists anymore. Why do you want it unlined? You probably have to go to a fabric store, get the fabric you want, and make your own sheet.

There are a few combo sheets out there, the top is lined for rain protection and the bottom parts are mesh.

I’m in Florida. It’s HOT. It rains. Hoping for something I can toss on a clean horse when afternoon showers are predicted.

THIS is just what I am looking for!

What is a “summer sheet”?

Too heavy. FLORIDA. Need much lighter than 1200 D

I just noticed, in the new Big Dee’s catalog, that they have a Country Pride 420D rain sheet with Neck Cover. For comparison, the Mio is 600D.

Horse.com has a Tough 1 in 320D.

Well, regardless of what specs say, it is one of the lightest, almost flimsy sheets I’ve ever seen. YMMV!

ETA: Just a thought, give Schneider’s a call and see what they recommend. They are usually very helpful.

Something light enough you’d put it on overnight before a show to keep a horse clean, but probably not during the day when temps are warmer. Like yesterday olde very light cotton canvas sheets. Canvas is a stretch - not that have and not that tough.
