Acetyl-D-Glucosamine

Anyone using this as an injectible?

Trying to narrow down some issues with my horse and this is what was suggested to me by my vet.

I am. I’m calling it Go-Go juice  He had some funky on again off again creaky soreness/ lameness going on at the beginning of winter. We got pads back on his feet and added 10 ml of this once a week and MAN! What a difference! My vet said it’s more bio-available to them IM vs orally and he is a very good pin cushion, so we’re going to keep him on it til spring at least and re-evaluate then. I have to say, he’s feeling MIGHTY good these days.

I use it instead of Adequan because it’s less expensive.

I use it. I’ve been happy with the results and so has my pocket book.

I used it in the past in between adequan shots and have known others who just use Acetyl-D. It helped keep my older horse comfortable.

My vet generally recommends it in addition to another joint treatment but it’s not expensive and some horses are okay with just that.

I use it. But it’s all about the dosage. The vials come in concentrations of 50 mg/ml to 250 mg/ml, so you need to know the concentration to know how many cc’s to give. It may not be very effective if you give the same dose as Adequan (500 mg). I give 1000 mg and find it cheap and effective  A larger horse might need more.

Works on my two and it’s very inexpensive. Love it.

Thanks, what dosing program do you follow?

I have a 100ml bottle which contains 200mg/ml

Anybody care to share what it costs?

I’ve been looking for “something” to help with my gelding’s joints, this sounds like a possible option. I’m on a tight budget though…

Sure, although I am not exactly sure as I had a previous visit I never got a bill for a visit in December and was the exact same price as this bottle so I may have paid the previous bill and get another bill in the mail for the acetyl. No idea.

Anyway, I paid $160.00 for 100ml. Dosage is I believe 10ml per injection given as a loading dose every 4 or 7 days for 7 shots or one month, and then once every two weeks, once a month, or 24 hours before a show.

My vet said that it really varies as what works for the horse but the more often you get it the sooner you need to look at another option.

Dosage depends on the horse’s weight, and on the concentration. I understand people are now giving between 100 - 200 mg per 100 pounds, so it would be 1000 - 2000 mg for a 1000 pound horse. Enjoytheride, if you’re giving 10 cc’s at 200 mg/ml, that’s 2000 mg. I think you got a good price  I give 1200 mg to a 1200 lb horse.

I pay $99 for 100 ml. My daughter’s horse gets 10 ml once a week for about a month then 10 ml every two weeks. He’s a 19 year old dressage schoolmaster so we need to take good care of those joints. I know school and pleasure horses that do well with only 10 ml per month after a loading dose of once a week for 4 weeks. My vet said that the studies that showed benefit for glucosamine were done with the injections, not feed supplements.

Where is everyone getting it?

The stuff I get is 10% injectable (100 mL). I’ll have to ask my vet more info about it, since I gather there are several different concentrations. My horses get 5 mL every week to 10 days or so. Cost is a whopping $30.00 plus postage.

AND IT WORKS!

The size of the vial means little unless you know the concentration. A 100 ml vial @ 200 mg/ml has twice as much acetyl-d-glucosamine as a 100 ml vial @ 100 mg/ml, so should obviously cost more

Anyone know if you can give the glucosamine together in the same syringe with Pentosan? (I guess I could ask my vet, just a question that popped into my head)

My vet writes a prescription that I take to a local compounding pharmacy that does a lot of work with area vets.

I would ask your vet for sure but if I remember correctly Wedgewood compounds Pentosan and Glucosamine together so I would think so.

My vet sells it to a lot of clients so he keeps it in his office so I got it from him.

Ok, I’m really going to ask a stupid question…
Is what everyone is talking about above just the “generic” Glucosamine shots? Or is this another/different option?
