7 horses on 1 acre? Yikes. You have to have a minimum of 1 acre per horse where I live. It’s really not hard to see why a young horse would become aggressive in that enviornment. She’s fighting for space and most likely food. Way too many horses.
It’s not the number of horses per acre that’s directly the issue. Many places in So Cal have 10+ horse per acre.
BUT, the difference is they are all their own little paddocks or mare motels, so are not in direct competition for precious resources.
I’ll certainly let you know if I have vet work done, I’m planning on getting the teeth of the whole herd looked at next month so will probably tie it all into the same visit.
The size of the pasture isn’t ideal, I’d love 10 acres for them all. But I don’t understand why that would suddenly become an issue. She’s lived in it for 2 years, and the place where she was born and weaned was even more crowded. There she was in with 5 other babies in a 60’x80’ dry pen. Its not resource guarding as they have hay 24/7 and there is shade all round the edge, plenty for everyone.
I’ve been putting her back in with everyone for a few hours during the day and she’s been fine, but mom is currently in a different pen, so maybe its a family thing…

Well, she’s a 2yo filly and it’s early Spring, so…
