"All the Queen's Horses": sweet article about, well, the Queen's horses

Gifted article, so hopefully it shows up! Part of coverage of the Queen’s Jubilee.

I wonder if the horse given her by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was a Hanoverian. I have heard that all their horses are Hanoverians (black)

I believe they are Canadian bred by now, IIRC there was an article about the mounted police a (long) while back.

Well I had to Google myself. Years ago I thought I’d read on the American Hanoverian site that they were breeding their own black Hanoverians. Here’s what I found

This title made me think Rita Crundwell not the actual queen.

I’m too tall and probably too heavy for ponies now, at mid-life, but the idea of being able to ride a pony when I’m shrunken and elderly makes me smile.

Depending on the pony, the larger breeds can easily carry an adult. I have ridden Section C Welsh and definitely don’t feel under-horsed as they take up ones legs. Section Ds, which can be more than 14.2, are as often ridden by adults as children in the UK. Similarly, Highland ponies are big, strong people who can carry a lot of weight and are widely used for adult novice riders when trekking in Scotland. I’m 5’9" so not the shortest person.

love the typo

I see. How much weight could they carry?

“I know many people and some of them are human”. I forget who said that.

The Welsh D or crosses were used extensively as cavalry horses by the British army. They would regularly carry 18 stone with rider and kit. A stone is 14 lbs so a whooping 252 lbs. Modern day views are different on the difficult subject of how much weight a horse might carry but I believe the army went for 25% of horse’s body weight. More modern views tend towards 20% but modern horses are not as fit because we no longer expect 6 or 8 hours of work, or more, each day. On the other hand, in my youth, a horse aged 18 was fairly unusual and was definitely considered to be past hard work. Now eventers are winning 4* events on horses that age.

Ditto. I was hoping something else scandalous had happened since her release last year.

I didn’t realize it was a TB! I love this story…thanks for sharing the video. My mom had watched it and was telling me but I didn’t get a chance to see it.

Actually googled and Burmese was Hanoverian x TB out of the musical ride breeding program. Interesting that the RCMP had German WB so early. Real cavalry horses!
