Am I the only one having problems with this site locking up on me?

Have you been able to pin down this behavior to when a specific ad is displaying?

No. I do know that certain ads on any site are an issue with my home internet (Verizon wireless hot spot), I assume because of the lack of bandwidth/spotty reception, but I can usually see what itā€™s hung up on there at the bottom of the screen where it says, ā€œwaiting onā€¦ā€ or similar. But, when the forum freezes up, I donā€™t see that. I do sometimes see the message ā€œResolving host,ā€ but not always.

@NoSuchPerson Are you still experiencing this issue?

Are you using Chrome as a browser and McAfee as virus protection, per chance?

Thanks!

You are not the only person having this problem.

I have posted and posted about it and no one has fixed the problem. Instead I get asked about my computer.

Itā€™s not my computer. It doesnā€™t have these problems on any other site.

The problem is COTH. Why no one at COTH is able to fix the problem, I donā€™t know. But the site has been locking up on me constantly, every day, and just this morning it has been worse than usual.

I canā€™t check threads I started, I canā€™t keep up with other threads that interest me, and I am fed up with posting in this forum to report the problem and request that it be fixed.

If it werenā€™t for the sometimes interesting threads on COTH and the sometime good discussions among COTHers, I would give up on this website.

As it is, I canā€™t always access the threads anyway. Or if I can, itā€™s only after a LONG wait, and a lot of having to X out and then try to come back in.

Have not had any problems lately.

For some time now, all runs well, posting fast, not slow as it was for a while.

A few times a day, my router would quit for some minutes, then come back on.

Even that has not happened now for a few days.

I am still having problems, usually in the middle of the day. I am using Chrome as my browser, but I do not have McAfee. I use Microsoft Essentials virus protection.

Clearing cookies and browsing history did nothing but cause a lot of inconvenience, unfortunately.

You did try to use an ad blocker?

Some had good luck with that.

Seems that some ads that come in thru google, so individual to each poster, gobble bandwidth so badly it causes problems.
If that is your problem, an ad blocker will clear things out?

I donā€™t have an ad blocker and donā€™t have problems.
Maybe the google ads I get donā€™t do what otherā€™s ads do?

Hi, @Blueyā€“

I donā€™t have an adblocker, and donā€™t want one. It seems wrong to me to use a free site that is paid for by ads, then block the ads. Yeah, I know, Iā€™m weird, but Iā€™ve known that for years.

The ads that seem to cause trouble are not from COTH, but google and follow us around from one place to another.
Some where those show up also have mentioned having similar problems, although it makes sense that some supporting platforms may be more affected than others, depending on how they are formatted.

Hummmmā€¦ must be your computer as Iā€™m not having

Do you have problems with any other sites, @Bluey? I donā€™t, nor did others who reported this problem. I guess my thinking is that a site that is supported by ad revenues should make sure its platform doesnā€™t drive people to use adblockers. Itā€™s only in their best interest.

Weā€™ll see what happens, and Iā€™ll continue to walk away for a while when I get too frustrated.

Rebecca

You shouldnā€™t have to resort to ad blockers, though I understand why users may utilize them!

The tech folks are looking into the issues now.

Thanks everyone for sharing information on the issue and for helping to brainstorm possible solutions/sources for the problems.

it is becoming very persistent in Chrome. The front page and each forum page is fine, when you get to the individual page of a topic, it freezes up. Very unfortunate

hoopoe, in the never ending search for why some of this nonsense happensā€¦ have you/can you try, on the same computer, using a different browser (IE, FF, Safari as appropriate) and see if the behavior stays with the computer or really is Chrome.

Asking as the behavior you are seeing I donā€™t in Safari (and I donā€™t use Chrome to access COTH). Looking to change just one thing (browser) and see what happens to the ā€œfreeze upā€ behavior.

This is so bafflingā€“I have no problems using chrome.

@hoopoe, did you see the post about antivirus?

What version of Chrome are people using and having problems in?

FWIW, I am using version 64.0.3282.186 (Official Build) (64-bit). I seem to have lost my adblocker somewhere. I donā€™t have other extensions or themes. I use Avira anti virus. Iā€™m on a fairly new PC with Win 10 Home. I access via wifi on a home network without a VPN or any other ā€œinterestingā€ connection. I rarely have more than a half dozen tabs open. I have 32 GB RAM.

eta: here are several things to try for those with chrome issues: https://productforums.google.com/forā€¦me/hJruZJO88u0

In other boards Iā€™ve participated in, people with persistent problems were encouraged to run CPU-Z and submit the details about their systems to the help forum. That was super helpful in pinning stuff down. Maybe we could do something similar? (This one looks to do something similar without a download. Better for people?)

hoopoe, I finally resorted to an adblocker (AdGuard) download middle of last week, and tada - freeze ups stopped

My computer geek brother says McAfee can cause problems and advised me against using it. He said Avg free is better, though Iā€™m using Windows defender due to the tiny memory on my notebook.

Iā€™ve gone to Chrome (usually use Firefox) just to see if I would have any problems. Iā€™ve edited a post, used the "go to last read post "function, and opened several threads. I havenā€™t had any problems.

Teeny memory (RAM)? Or teeny harddrive (storage?)

I wonder if part of this problem has to do with memory leaks in browsersā€“some people say chrome is full of memory leaks, some people say the same thing about firefox. They can probably all be leaky depending on browsing habits and ads and other computer configurations. But for those with limited RAM, a memory leak that is perhaps being made worse by ads could certainly be causing browsers to hang up, and it is not particularly repeatable for others.

The tablet or laptop or whatever it is was built with a small memory capacity. It was just designed that way. Itā€™s not a problem for me since I donā€™t use the computer for work. This, according to a computer knowledgeable person who looked at it for me.
I have no problems using COTH or any other site. Iā€™m fine with the limited memory or RAM or whatever it is. The computer was a gift.

I use the disk cleanup etcā€¦ to keep the computer in its optimum state.

Any updates?
I use Chrome on a PC & the problem is getting a little worse every day. Any other sites accessed do NOT have issues.
On my Android phone the BB works just dandy & that is using Chrome as well.
