Ammy friendly stallion suggestions (for event horse)
We have bred many horses of the type you are looking for. We are on FB as well as have an active website: www.watermark-farm.net
I have a 6 year old by Waldaire (Watermark Farm) that I am eventing and absolutely love him. He has a really great brain and is super sensible.

My two year old filly by Edelweiss de Bonce (Selle Francais but high percentage of blood) is not under saddle but she is out of a big old fashioned TB mare and is freaky quiet. Super easy to do anything with her and so far gives me every reason to believe she’ll be really lovely under saddle.

And I’ll have to agree with netg and also mention Anissa’s stallion Tate. He is just stunning and has a great temperament. I plan to breed to dam of my 2 year old filly to him in the future

I am only about an hour from you so if you’d like to see either of my two that I mentioned above you are welcome to visit! (Neither is for sale, so not advertising!)

take a look at Icarus De Carolina, he is the sire of Pancho Villa, Boyd’s new horse, and a total doll

his babies are brave, can be a bit sassy if the mom brings that to the table but they are brave

Ike is a lovely relaxed stallion that is as relaxed at shows as he is a home

Our Landkoenig’s (two fillies o/o TB mares) have been exceptionally wonderful to work with. They love to work and are eager to please. I have also seen Pablo bred to produce event offspring and keep an eye on a lovely mare (Ping) he sired that is winning everything in CA.

Gotta plug Gatsby  He specifically, G-line in general, crosses extremely well with TB mares, and that cross would get you an 85%+ TB foal. If your mare needs some bone, he’ll do that. Very ammy-friendly. I know of at least one UL Eventer who has bought his foals/offspring specifically for eventing.

Tatendrang as mentioned. Also known for great temperaments in their foals are Tradition Pb* and Halimey Go.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Lots to look into. The mare does not, I repeat, does not need help adding bone, lol. She’s done exceptionally well on that front, and I’m a bit concerned with any of the heavier type stallions adding too much bone. This horse will hopefully be a successful upper level horse, and will still need to be able to run and jump. My preference would be full TB, or at least a very high percentage blood, as I don’t want to stray too far from the TB type. I adore the stallion, State Of The Art, but I’m not sure he has put any solid event horses on the ground. He would give a high percentage TB blood, but add maybe a touch for pizazz.

Unfortunately, the pool for full TB stallions that have produced already, and are known for good brains, is limited at best. A huge issue if you ask me.

A Fine Romance is at the top of my list, and has been, but as I understand it, he is not booking any more mares this year.

Again, with size not being an issue with this mare, she is 16.2, old school phenotype, and passes along size and bone, I’m a bit worried about getting an elephant of a foal if bred to something too heavy. I do like Irish breeding, but it was an ISH that took me out of the game for quite some time. He did, however, come from a line of horses not known for their ammy friendliness. (Bruce Davidsons ‘Lion’ line). He was technically 15/16ths TB, but was stamped all Irish, no matter who you’d ask. He could certainly run and jump though, and was probably the best XC horse I’ve ever sat on.

I’ll look into some of the Irish stallions though. I do tend to like them quite a bit.

Unfortunately, Windfall is low on my list in general. I was not a fan of his during his competition days, and have seen several of his foals (out of TB mares) that have been on the small side, and a bit to ‘thick’ for my liking. They have had great brains, but really seem to come out stamped as windfalls, and the mares genes get a bit lost. I adore this mare, and what she puts on the ground, and really want to compliment it, not hide it.

I also don’t peticularly care about registries, as the mare and foal likely would not be going to inspections, although the option to be able to present mare and foal for approval is certainly nice.

I would gladly consider a national hunt bred horse, but finding info on their going foals is often tricky.

Oh this is though, lol!! I could tell you just about anything about most of the TB stallions here in KY, and what type they throw, but finding the ones that produce the good sport horses is often a tough (and expensive) proposition, considering that is certainly not their goal in life.

For reference, video of the mares 5yr old (17.0hh) full TB daughter at her second ever event (2 months in training):

I really appreciate the suggestions, and am getting through them, one by one. Keep em coming!

I am going to second IRONMAN! I have my second Ironman foal and they are the most wonderful animals to work with! Here is my Ironrose: http://www.herselffarm.com/images/NonTBFairChampionDSC_0018_resized.jpg

Ironman has many eventing horses out there, here is one: http://www.ironmanonline.com/images/281_falcon2.jpg he also makes good jumpers: http://www.ironmanonline.com/images/261_Issadora_Taders_Point.jpg

Also really like Gatsby! I have a close friend showing her Gatsby in YEH, and doing very well. He has fabulous bone and a wonderful temperment too.

Then with G you’ll be fine. He makes all his kids look like him in bone and he’s not heavy. He’d just add bone if the mare is lighter than he is

This horse will hopefully be a successful upper level horse, and will still need to be able to run and jump. My preference would be full TB, or at least a very high percentage blood, as I don’t want to stray too far from the TB type. My mare is an OTTB, bred to Gatsby, and produced a foal with more bone than she has (she’s fairly light), but even with the WB infusion, he is NOT a “dull” horse. He’s got a lot of get up and go.

Oh, at 16.2, G will probably add a bit of height as well. My mare is 16.1+ and the 2yo will likely end up close to 17h. That’s also what he does - adds height if it’s “lacking”. He literally stamps his foals in regards to bone, height, temperament, etc, so they look/act like him.

For reference, here’s a backside view of my mare (far right) and her 2yo (middle).

Gizmo at 16 months, to show an idea of his movement, and at 18 months to show another comparison of the increase in bone, keeping in mind the mare is not large-boned - for a bit of size reference, she wears a cob-sized halter/bridle.

I’ll 2nd the suggestion for Gatsby. He’s a really lovely stallion, 1/2 TB, looks more like a heavier TB in person, and produces light, elegant foals

I’ll also throw Guaranteed Gold in as a suggestion - 16.1hh cremello TB stallion that evented up to the Training level and has several offspring eventing now. he and his offspring can be seen at: www.TrueColoursFarm.com and https://www.facebook.com/#!/GuaranteedGoldOffspring

His babies are “Ammy friendly” to a tee! Thats one of the very strong reasons that a lot of Mare Owners breed to him - to put a good sane, workable, user friendly brain on their babies. With him being cremello, he also 100% guarantees a dilute colour on the foal

Good luck in your search!

Gatsby is actually almost 60% TB, due to Gonzo I’s 22% TB

As far as full TB stallions goes, I would say you have Salute The Truth, Innkeeper (call VA Tech he is older but he was standing there), Mystic Replica, Just A Devil, and Artrageous (spelling). All very nice stallions to look at, I don’t have any first hand experience with their foals but have heard great things about STT and Innkeeper as far as temperaments ago.

Obviously this is in addition to AFR and Triple Twist who I posted earlier. Good luck, stallion shopping is so much fun!

Curious and since he has been mentioned, is there any video of AFR? I’ve heard that he is a lovely mover and I really like what he throws, but I wanna see him move!

I agree that Gatsby is one to consider as well. We chose him for one of our mares this year. From our research, he is consistently passing on his fantastic temperament and seems to be stamping his foals. I also have to put in a plug for his fertility. When our mare was ready last minute, we got in a collection that was already being split by a few other mare owners. I was a little nervous as we tried for 3 years to breed her unsuccessfully with shipped semen. I was excited to see she took on the first try with Gatsby. He is well worth a look!
Good luck with you decision

Is it possible to get Clover Brigade semen? He’s Kilrodan Abbott’s (who goes around Rolex Xc like a hunter) sire and an ISH 5 star stallion for eventing progeny.

Weatherford on COTH posted:
"ALL my horses are the Clover Brigade breeding, and they ALL have the same attitude.

Clover Brigade is an amazing, sweet, in the pocket, kind of stallion and he passes that on to his children and grandchildren. Even when crossed with temperamental lines such as Cruising.
"

Yeah, I was going to comment on the “Irish horses are ammy friendly” comment. There are some HOT and decidedly not “ammy friendly” ISH out there. My husband’s high school friend was also taken out of the game by a ISH she imported for big $$ as a jumper, horse was tough and ended up a giveaway. Plenty of hot, difficult ISH out there.

QHEventr- your filly is a nice horse! I know you said you are interested in TBs, would you consider a race stallion?

I just bought a very, very nice gelding by MD sire Dance With Ravens.
http://www.bloodhorse.com/stallion-register/stallions/137624/dance-with-ravens

My guy has nice short cannons, good bone and good feet. He’s a bit over 16hh and is still growing. He has a lot of natural suspension and a very good jump. And a well set neck for dressage. He’s brave and not spooky, and surprisingly quiet. A real can-do attitude.

A 4 yr old by him recently came in second in the YEH4 yr old @ Wardecca. A few COTHers have young prospects by him and are pleased.

I would absolutely consider a race stallion, and am looking at a local stallion named Ambassador. But with only 5 foals on the ground, and the oldest being a 2yr old, jury is still out on their temperaments.

I do like the looks of Dance With Ravens, quite a bit. Only issue would be having to transport to MD and board the mare there for breeding.

Thanks! I love the Dance with Ravens suggestion

photos of said mare

Hi all,

figured I’d add in a few photos of the lovely Gold Coast Kris. Might give a better idea of what I’m looking to compliment. These were taken early this year, age 19.
