Has anyone heard of this place before? There are some nice looking horses in the bunch. Do they put on a sale yearly or is this the first time? There are some Dutch Warmblood crosses there as well as QH, TB and Draft crosses.
Says its their first sale so I’m guessing they just started a program. There are several prisons who would take in some horses, train them up and then sell after a period of time to pay for the program.
Similar in intent to the ones that have dog training programs where inmates train service dogs
Inmates gain a skill and mostly learn life skills while working with their animal. Animals - typically from a shelter or the like get a new chance.
I don’t have any details about the auction, but I believe they breed horses and provide them to the New Orleans PD. Seeing them is the highlight of any trip to NOLA. Last year (not sure about this year because I haven’t been around) they also used them on LSU’s campus for football games. They’re huge and beautiful!
I’m headed to the rodeo that weekend-it would be fun to go to the preview day on Friday to see some of them in person (not that I could purchase). If any COTHers go, tell me! I like this girl (among others):

Hmmm…Maybe I’ll tell my SO that I need one of these because they have brands shaped like LA and there’s really no better keepsake to remind me of all the great years I’ve spent down here. Moving up to his part of the country will be the end of an era for me so I’m going to need to really need a proper commemoration. I’m sure he’d love that! Plus that’s a totally valid reason to buy a horse, right?

I know about the prison…Angola is pretty famous among southern prisons…it would only be logical that they use that land for horses as well

Angola is also well known for the inmates rodeo.
There are some real cuties in the sale catalog.
The breeding program at Angola is not “new” per se. The warden Burl Cain stood the only percheron stallion in the state for many years. He crossed his stallion with very nice TB mares and now has some well established lines. He provides horses not only to the NOPD but mounted police divisions across the country. They have a training program there at the prison and although I never got to go he was very pleasant and willing to give a tour of the facility and horses.
I would love to buy one of his geldings. I would imagine after the mess they see at Angola they would be pretty much bomb proof.

is any place that houses humans like rats in traps til they die a nice place to begin with ?
at least at Angola some have a chance at the outside air and some hope of rehabilitation thru the prison farms

I was thinking more of its historical (30s to 50s) reputation.
I want this one: http://www.angolaprisonhorsesale.com/listings/bay-gelding-2
I would have no issues buying from a prison. Actually watched the program on the prison in Nevada that does the rehab of BLM horses. Pretty interesting. It is quite the honor for those men to be in that program so they were very “yes sir” “no sir” types at that point. If they wanted to do it they had to be on their best behavior.

Sorry to hijack this thread for a moment, but some of the best show’s I’ve been to are at the Henderson County Fair Grounds in Athen’s TX. The work is done by prisonres from the prisoners from the local prison. They are very nice, well mannered and they don’t let you do any of the heavy lifting. It was the most relaxed I’ve ever been at a horse show! They are usually the guys that are working hard to get paroled, or about to be paroled.

Well it is a prison after all. For people who have committed crimes. That means they should be have the basics, but prisons shouldn’t be the lap of luxury.
Back to horse related. Some nice horses in there, but really isn’t it just another bunch of cross bred horses? Are there not already plenty of those out there? If this was your average Joe breeding these horses, everybody would be critical of the “backyard breeder”.
Send them a bunch of BLM mustangs to work with instead of breeding more horses to add to the population.
Yep, long standing program. I have a friend who has the neatest horse from Angola. Big grey Perch cross with the LA brand. She did some A shows with him in both the hunters and jumpers I believe. Very cool guy! Probably 10+ years old now.
I want this one…

And how many dressage riders, hunter jumper riders etc would buy them?
I think they have some nice bombproof type horses for the AA.
I think supporting the program is a good thing.
C’mon Down!

the largest employer in this county is a mountain prison with a history just as nasty, black and long as Angola…I’ve lived my whole life in it’s long shadow one way or another…there is lack of “comfort” and then there is wickedness for it’s own sake.

I’d love some of those babies! Do they sell them privately in addition to the sale? Anyone ever bought one directly?

I am almost postive my friend bought hers directly…would have been 6 or 7 years ago. This is the first sale.
I shouldn’t but think I am gonna go…ACK!

Is this prison somehow different that all other prisons?

If you do, let me know what you think! I’d love a good resource for AA dressage horses. I hate when people don’t put heights in info sites. Any idea how big these guys are? I’m assuming since they are mostly draft and WB crosses they are over 16h, but you know what they say about assuming!
If they’re anything like the horses NOPD rides (and they should be-the PD gets their stock from Angola) then they’re mostly huge. Well over 16 hands. I realize the PD probably has height minimums (and there’s variety from horse to horse), but those are some really tall, nice horses they ride. It’s always the highlight of my Mardi Gras to see them. I get plenty of eye rolls from my non horse friends when I drool and swoon over them
JenRose-are you thinking about going to the preview day? I kind of want to go see some of these guys in person. But I am not going to the auction-I would do something stupid and come home with one.
I want this guy instead of the mare in my last post (although she’s still a cutie) http://www.angolaprisonhorsesale.com/listings/4-year-old-gray
My mom told me his name should be Bad Ass because he came from prison
