If you do, let me know what you think! I’d love a good resource for AA dressage horses. I hate when people don’t put heights in info sites. Any idea how big these guys are? I’m assuming since they are mostly draft and WB crosses they are over 16h, but you know what they say about assuming! :)[/QUOTE]

I think they are big (16hh +) but will let you know if I head down there!

Prob not…I couldn’t leave North LA til 5pm or so on the preview day (Friday) and am about 4 hours away. If you go to the preview day…scope em out and send me a pm!!!

If ya’ll do got to the preview day or auction please report back. I would love to know more about these guys. There were so many I really like! The good thing is I do not have room or finances for another horse or I would be so tempted to take a road trip!

Well…if I have to go and report back I will-twist my arm. After all, the COTHers need a report! I’m willing to put myself in the direct line of temptation for the enabling of others.:winkgrin:

Why why why why WHY can’t I have a decent income to afford board on one horse?! Just one little horse…

Hello, chrome, come to momma:

So, any thoughts on what the price range will be?

Interesting. I lived in New Orleans for a long time and my friend worked at the stable in City Park, where the NOPD horses are sometimes used as lesson horses during down time. They breed LOVELY draft crosses. The NOPD horses are some of the finest. They are all exactly what a draft cross should turn out like. Whenever I’m in town visiting and see any, I always stop to give them peppermints = )

I’ve also been to the prison rodeo, which is a pretty decent event.

As to the comments on them being just another BYB, I can see that point of view, but they have a history of supplying lovely horses for the NOPD, so I think they’re a step above that at least for those types of horses.

Bump to see if anyone is headed to check these horses out and potentially purchase this weekend. I’m going to try to go Friday just to see what they’re like if I can get enough work done today. If I can swing it and you have any specifics you’re curious about I’d be happy to try to check them out (with my very non-professional eye)

Seriously think we need a good report

JGHIRETIRE, I agree 100%!!!

I would love to go…unfortunately it is 13 hours from me!

I would love to hear more though about this sale. That chestnut mare posted earlier (#639) looks really cute from the picture! Any idea about the bloodlines…is she by a DWB stallion?

Ditto, some real cuties! And much better than BYB quality, I’d say… at least they are UTD on feet, vaccs, etc and some have training!

I like this guy… http://www.angolaprisonhorsesale.com/listings/5-year-old-dark-gray-gelding-6-months-under-saddle

And he’ll be a looker when older, look at that chrome! http://www.angolaprisonhorsesale.com/listings/bay-gelding-2

The DWB stallion’s pedigree is on their facebook page:

You trying to steal my horses? The colt is mine I tell you mine! Ok well not so much, but somebody should really buy him. He’s just too stinkin cute. I am way over in CA otherwise I might consider buying him just cuz.

Thanks for posting, I hadn’t heard of this particular program. I was visiting NOLA this summer and remember looking at a couple of police horses thinking, “dang, those are some nice horses!” - makes sense now, I had no idea they had someone breeding specifically for them.

If my current lease doesn’t work out, I may be heading to LA for one of these. They have a lot of good-looking horses. I’ll be checking in for an indepth report!

I am sure the sale is due to budget cuts. I know they have cut back on personnel at most La prisons and have been looking for other areas to cut.

If anyone goes and can give me an idea of both how the horses look and more importantly how many people are there looking it would be great. We are probably going but I can’t decide if I want to bring the trailer. Most of the recent horse sales in this area have had plenty of people looking but not many buying.

Bopper

One funny thing relating to this. About two months ago Angola sold two horses through a local stockyard. The horses were properly advertised (the sale of state owned property has to be advertised). The stockyard they were sold at sells horses by the pound with starting bids at $0.10 a pound. So they bring in these WB and start bidding at $4500. The cowboys sitting around the auction ring pretty much were falling out of their seats. Each horse had one bidder at $4500 and they went to their new homes. I sure the ones sold were the cream of the crop picked by trainers.

Do they normally have some stock for sale to the public at all times? I can’t go this weekend (I’m in AZ), but am relocating to the east coast and may be interested in the future for a decent prospect. Will be very interested in what these horses go for!

Just call the prison and ask for the warden, Burl Cain. Tell him what you are looking for and he will surely be able to find you something or direct you.
