I’ve heard of their program before. It has been a model for other prisons around the country. Working with animals is good for everyone.

Jeez, don’t I know my type

Every last one I picked by looks alone…see if you discover a pattern;

795477 7 year old chestnut gelding - Dutch/Perch

795548 5 year old dark bay gelding - TBxPerch

795562 5 year old bay gelding with 2 white hind socks TBxPerch

795580 5 year old chestun mare - Dutch warmblood/perch/TB

LOL! I mean come on!

Paula

Most are 1/2 dutch I wonder what the bloodlines of the dutch are… I see 2 that I want but not paying to ship them here

ETA I just emailed and asked them

I want one of these 3 but I wish they all had better pics and a video

http://angolaprisonhorsesale.com/listings/5-year-old-chestnut-gelding-lots-chrome-very-flashy I really wasn’t fond of the rider

Paula-- you just like them a tad ā€œplumpā€

With the tbred traffic between here and FL I would think you’d get a decent price for shipping!

Do you know how much the horses sold for in the last auction?

The prison had/has it’s own Dutch WB stallion who sired or grandsired a lot those horses. No idea if he is/was an approved KWPN.
While the idea of prisoners working with horses may be somewhat noble, the world hardly needs a state institution mass producing mixed breed grade horses in a world where there are more than enough cheap and unwanted horses out there.

I think the top price was $5,500 or $6,500… This year they do have a minimum purchase price of $500, so that may give an indication that it is possible some went below that last year.

Drvmb1ggl3 I agree 100% that is why I’m not sure if I would even consider one. Top price I would even think of would be $500 if that. If shipping wasn’t any more than 300 lol. I would need more video and I would prefer it to be at liberty than with a rider.

For what they are after, why the heck would they do that???

I am really surprised that not all of these horses are horrendously conformed! That being said, I think they should do something like retrain horses off the track or rescues from the kill pen rather than breed more horses.

why would you think they ought to be horrific looking?

The 3 I looked at seemed nice. or do you think because it’s ā€˜the big house’ they are not bothering with any of the principles of breeding past ā€˜has uterus, will carry’?

They are no different than any other project of cross breeding. Georgia Grande comes to mind, similar breeding principle…just not with the added benefits of bringing something good to another human being.

retraining is one part of the horse training, handling breeding stock is a completely different branch. If and when these men are released they will have some experience in that field. Can’t be a bad thing.

Some place in Wyoming a prison is breaking Mustangs…also cool, and maybe in need of expansion.

I totally agree with you, there are too many that need homes already, doing a rehab program would be better all around.

Don’t they also have a Percheron stallion (s). I know the horses for the New Orleans MP are from there. They are wonderful horses!!!

The Baton Rouge Mounted Police had some very nice greys, that were from Angola. Some of them could be turned into ā€œsuper fancyā€ dressage horses. Angola bred mainly for mounted police units and for the yearly Rodeo, that was held at Angola.

I saw an extremely moving tv show about inmates at a prison in Arizona (?)
who took wild mustangs and trained them as saddle horses. The wild took the wild out of some of those guys and many got good jobs on ranches etc. Seemed a wonderful answer (instead of breeding more horses).

Well, if you want nice horses down the road somebody has to breed them. Might as well be a prison.
They have a staff that won’t just run off or not show for work, is cheap and lives on sight. Certainly not bad aspects.

Those horses look nice. There is no reason not to look at them. They certainly seem to be on par with other designer mutts aimed at the amy market.

Rehab is nice, breaking Mustangs is wonderful. But not every need is filled by a rehabbed horse or a Mustang from the range. never will be.

I only saw one in the whole bunch that I would consider. I think it’s stupid to breed this kind of mix when so many go to slaughter that are better bred and better put together. Alot going to Canada and Mexico are decent and broke and could be worked with and fed well by a prison program and maybe find a good home instead of adding more through an ill-thought out ā€œbreedingā€ program. More like a puppy mill than breeding for quality. Most of the market is ammies, but they also want quality.
What a shame!

Although I agree that some of these horses are decent, you make it sound like there is a lack of quality horses out there - the horse market is bursting at the seams in this country and you can’t tell me there isn’t already a horse out there somewhere that can’t fill every possible need when 100,000+ horses a year are being sent to slaughter in the U.S. Personally, I find this ā€œenterpriseā€ - they aren’t exactly giving the horses away for free with that free inmate labor - irresponsible.

They even say on the Web site: ā€œThe Angola Prison Horse Sale is part of the third weekend of the Angola Rodeo…What began 40 years ago as a ā€œfunā€ thing by a handful of rodeo-loving inmates and employees is now big business. Proceeds from the Angola Prison Rodeo cover rodeo expenses and supplement the Louisiana State Penitentiary Inmate Welfare Fund which provides for inmate educational and recreational supplies.ā€

There are a million other ways they could make a buck, and just as much horse experience could be gained picking up one of the dozens of unbroke horses being funneled through their local auction on a weekly basis. So much for teaching social responsibility…someone please tell me they are liquidating or that these horses were in fact not purposely bred

I think it’s stupid to breed this kind of mix when so many go to slaughter that are better bred and better put together.

Yes, they are, but a lot of these ā€˜better bred and better put together’ slaughter horses are not sound, or have some serious mental/training issues. Obviously, not all of them do, but a lot of them do.

…

an ill-thought out ā€œbreedingā€ program

If CAjunbelle is right, and the Baton Rouge police department has several of these horses, I wouldn’t call them poorly bred or the Angola breeding program ill-thought-out. A horse suitable for a mounted police unit has to be physically sound and mentally, well, precisely what is needed for 90% of ammy/child riders out there.

If they could be doing some sort of rescue/rehab, then that would be nice. But I would guess that it is easier to work with an untouched mustang, or a nicely-bred-to-be-level-headed, and well handled youngster, than something with enough issues that it can’t be sold to a riding buyer, and thus goes to slaughter/rescue. And yes, I KNOW that there are perfectly sound, suitable horses in rescue situations or that have gone to slaughter that could have been saved. I also know that slaughter/rescue is a dumping ground for unsound or unridable horses.
