According to news sources, a 4 year old (about to turn 5) girl in Louisianna was attacked by her family’s male Pit Bull, unprovoked, while watching TV. Mauled about the head and face, died at the hospital. Apparently the dog “went berserk” and was still agitated when police arrived, so they were forced to shoot it. 12 times. No signs of abuse, dog fighting or other troubling issues at the home. There was a female Pit in the home who appears to be in heat. This is just too sad.
These cases are just too tragic for words.
The ‘female in heat’ was supposed to be a trigger in the fatal San Francisco attack that killed a boy. That one had other factors, including the boy’s mother knew he was afraid of the dog, and there had been other attacks by the dog. His mother left him in the basement with a shovel for protection, and went to the store (that’s as I recall it, and it facts might not be accurate, because it has been a long time), and came back to her son dead in the house. She got jail time.
I’m not surprised a female in heat might lead to the male being more aggressive than usual, but I’m betting there were other red flags that aren’t being mentioned so the parents aren’t blamed.

Are these people for real?? Who ARE these parents?? How absolutely, pathologically stupid and selfish can one possibly get? That does certainly seem to be a theme!
A ranger busted a guy in Yellowstone several years ago for shoving a bear in the front seat of his car NEXT TO HIS WIFE so he’d get a nice picture of the two of them “at the wheel”…
As Mr. Tiger says, “Some people need a nice, gentle pat on the head…with a hammer”.
Yeah, but in this case mom and daughter were just watching TV together.
JanM, that has to be the Faibish case. I can’t believe they had a hung jury over that one. The mother should be in jail.
Here’s the horror of that mother:

Sounds absolutely horrendous.
I can’ imagine that horror.
I’m glad the ASPCA lady mentioned FIX YOUR DOG, not as an excuse for this
but as a recommendation. I hope they (and the folks in AZ) really take these opportunities for public information.

OMG, that mother is truly a horror. A 12 year old has to be locked in the basement with a shovel at the door, and she still calls the dogs “loving family pets”??? Loving family pets don’t require you to lock up your kids when you have to leave the house!
Of course she was breeding the dogs. Of course.

How can someone so very lacking in two brain cells reproduce and own dogs. OMFG. That mother is just scary.
I keep seeing the references to spaying your female dog in this thread about the pit bull’s having killed the little girl. I don’t know why it bothers me, but it does. If a dog has to be spayed or neutered to be a safe dog, that is not a safe dog to have around kids or people.
The only pit bull I ever really knew was a spayed female who would be perfectly sweet 99 percent of the time, but would snap occasionally very violently. She ultimately had to be euthanized. The only boxers I ever knew belonged to neighbors and attacked my rough collie when she developed health problems. I don’t support breed bans, but there is no way on this planet that I’d let a pit bull stay in the house with a child without direct, competent adult supervision.
Even with the mother in the room, the pit bull killed this little girl. It is just so heartbreaking.
That Faibish woman can’t be all there mentally. Let’s look past the fact that she shouldn’t have been breeding dogs, the fact that those particular dogs clearly didn’t belong in a house with children and so many other creepy facts in that case… Who locks a 12 year old down in the basement with a shovel propped against the door??? If she wanted to separate the dogs from the kid, wouldn’t it make more sense to give the kid free run of the house and shut the dogs in the basement with a shovel in the door? What a complete nincompoop!
I’m sorry but I burst out laughing at this. These are two consenting adults so I can laugh at their stupidity. No sympathy from me if one of them got mauled.
A 130lb pit bull? Never heard of such a thing.
I can’t believe that Faibish woman got off either.
In the current case, I can’t believe this happened without previous warnings that were ignored.

Worse that she STILL defends the dogs…!

With how built that dog is and those cropped ears it would not surprise me if it was a dog fighting ring rescue or came from a breeder that bred dogs for exactly that. My friend has Pitbulls and they look nothing like the creature in this story and have never shown signs of aggression.
She took them once to a dog park and a little chiwawa (sp?) thing ran up and started barking and snaring at them, and her dogs ran and coward in fear behind my friend.

WTF? “It was Nicky’s time to go.” ?!?!?!?
Reading that article made me feel physically ill. She barricaded a 12-year old in the basement, and he somehow got out? Sounds like she loved her dogs more than her own kid.

I think it’s called obesity…
That said, I’ve never seen an animal that obese who could move fast enough to attack.
