Another New Horse - It's Bo!

Bo is looking so good!
Have you tried oat & honey granola bars?
My horse was crazy for them. I had to make sure I had the wrappers completely off because he would try to grab the whole bar from me.

:rofl:FOMO!
I used to call my pony Monkey See when he copied the WB who’d lick my cookieless empty hand into infinity.
Hope Elmo’s greed rubs off

Bo is looking so much better, scruffy coat notwithstanding :+1:

Have you tried BOSS for his coat?
That is, if Himself would accept it in his feed.
On the advice of COTH, I feed about 2tbsp 2X daily in my horses’ grain.
All 3 will also eat it from my hand as a treat.
Seems to make for a very soft & shiny haircoat.
My vet has complimented me on their coats & trust me, it ain’t my grooming skillz :smirk:

He is looking very handsome lately.

Ever try fig newtons, apple cinnamon, fed in little pieces?
Once a horse tastes one, they are hooked.
Work great to add little pills to some, they swallow the pieces whole, every time.

I have not, I don’t think I’ve had any on hand since he’s been here.

We’ve tried:
apples (only ate 3 small pieces)
oatmeal cookies
Nutri-good Low Sugar Snax (these are the ones he thinks are now OK)
Cheez-its
Cheerios
gummy bears
cinnamon graham crackers
Belvita Cinnamon breakfast biscuits

I don’t buy a ton of actual horse treats because Elmo doesn’t like most of them, but he loves human snacks. Give him a salty cracker any day. So far just experimenting with foods I already have on hand for Bo.

Mine like the Dollar General brand of strawberry newtons, they’re soft and sweet and easy for my nearly toothless old man to eat. Like Bluey said, I use them to feed the quarter pill of Previcox to him too. Just poke it down into the jelly center. Since he inhales the entire cookie, I can make absolutely sure he actually ingests his medicine, since it’s so small.

Too bad he doesn’t like oatmeal, Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies are another human food cookie treat mine love! I personally don’t care much for them, so I only buy them for the horses.

Oatmeal Cream Pies is my guy’s special horse show snack.

I once had a friend that would bring oatmeal cream pies to their horse 4 times a week. When it came time to deworm she would scrape out the filling and replace it with dewormer. Horse never batted an eye at them.

Dollar store ginger snaps are a hit at our house, even for the picky old man. And dollar store fig newtons.

I’ve actually done the same with Bute!

I’ve known horses to like bananas as well.

Likely the old hair that won’t let go and the hoof situation are related. Suppose he might tolerate a hoof supplement? IME, that’s one supplement that really produces results in hoof health and, as a bonus, improves poor quality coat.

Of course, it can only effect new growth so it has to cycle out over time. Hopefully you got started with proper nutrition before the spring hair formed but IME it takes a couple of coat changes to really get where it should be.

The hooves will just have to grow out of course. Malnutrition leaves souvenirs that can linger.

I think I hear Bo scoffing. :joy: I could probably find a pelleted one he’d eventually tolerate, although I am loathe to add yet another scoop of something to my feed room LOL. He’s fine with the B-12 pellets now, I no longer have to ‘marinate’ them in his grain for several hours to hide the smell.

I’m hoping to give it another month or two to finish filling him out and then re-evaluate his optimal diet, since right now what we’re looking at with the hooves and hair is the remnants of poor nutrition. I wonder if he’ll actually grow a forelock with a balanced diet… Currently it is a Sesame Street-esque poof - I should’ve gone with another muppet name.

And now I can’t unsee that! :joy:

It doesn’t quite flap like ostrich feathers, but it’s close. It HAS grown, though… it used to be a wisp, now it’s a poof. :joy: I just drew up some comparison pics to see. Left is this week, right is Nov.

That inspired me, so I also did comparisons of Elmo and Fern. Everyone’s forelocks have significantly improved on a better diet!

I’m sorry…I was distracted by his pony ears.

(He is going to be a saucy one when he is back to 100%. I can tell.)

My quarter horse had sweet itch and somewhat iffy hooves so he had every skin and hoof supplement known to mankind at some point over his lifetime. He was as shiny as a copper penny with a good mane and tail but just a sad little poof between his ears. It never grew and was a different texture than his mane.
