Yay Cooper!!! (And for Bo, too, of course!)
Hey, bayface! Yay for being back home! There is nothing like a sweet bay face looking back at you over the fence rail. (Unless it’s a chestnut blazeface looking out between the rails.)
I am so glad your bay boy is back home with you. And yay for Bo’s topline and withers!
Thats a ridiculous haircut, Cooper!
Cooper! You’re home! Is mom being stingy with snacks? It’s for your own good buddy!
Yay for Cooper’s (medically) triumphant return
I think they compare notes & do the Equine Hold My Beer to see who can come up with the priciest, most worrisome ill.
@ Bo’s 'tude re: food.
Remind him not so very long ago even rocks & sand got et!
I do have a special place just for plain bays… but I love them all. Their affections for me in return vary but Elmo is definitely the most people-y horse of the group at this point.
I am hopeful that his oddly short, poofy forelock and mane are a result of damage to the hair from ??? who knows what, and he will eventually grow some length there. It’s thick enough, just so poofy!
He’s less than thrilled with the prescribed “half a scoop of soaked senior every 6 hours”, which takes him all of 15 minutes to eat. Soon he will be allowed a 1/4 of a flake of alfalfa 2x a day… although I am still awaiting the actual written discharge instructions to be emailed to me. Seems to be a thing with this clinic.
I think he just likes to come up with new ways to concern me. I think his appetite is weather related - when I feed him in the cool(er) hours, he is much more interested in eating. Thankfully, school is out for summer here in another couple weeks and then I will be more able to accommodate late night meals without becoming a zombie. I don’t feel like he is losing weight in spite of his waning appetite, so that’s a plus.
Speaking of late night snacks, Bo and I did a little short last night.

Still planning on doing pics, not sure if a ride is in order… it’s 83 with 80% humidity and not even 11am. It’s like wading through soup.
Yuck!
OK, I admit I did not muster the enthusiasm to ride. Because it’s humid, and because Bo wasn’t into it either.
And a quick fun walkaround video. I noticed the bugs were tormenting him so I grabbed the fly spray, and once I was done he immediately dozed off:
Bo has quite the booty now, amazing!
Bo is already re-writing his resume:
-
Champion Napper
-
Certified Fence Checker (Under Saddle)
-
Proven Electric Fence Engineer
-
Feed & Grain Taste-Tester
-
Alfalfa Cube Aficionado
Just one more. He moved to a different spot to doze, and it is not hard at all to sneak up on him. I don’t think his hearing is quite what it used to be, either that or he just has no cares. After I took this I packed his tub of soaked cubes out there, which accidentally startled him awake. But I brought food, so it got instant nickers. Breakfast delivery? Yes please!
I was about to comment the same thing! I keep scrolling between his most recent pics & the ones in the original post. What a difference (and what blood, sweat, and tears it took to get there!)
I love his breathy nickers.
Look at that B-Hind!
At your late night YouTube, his NomNom mouth as you fill the bucket…
Today’s weather has been mostly ideal for riding except the rain shower that got me when I was on Elmo. I’m hoping my precious stupid-expensive saddle doesn’t have permanent water spots.
Soon as I get back home I am uploading another video to Bo’s YouTube channel stay tuned…
So, I was able to get some rides in today. And I decided to set up the Pivo and do some “real” work with Bo, since we’ve pretty much just been powerwalking the perimeter path lately. I wanted to see if he had improved at all, see how much he works out of the sewing machine trot, see if maybe we could make some circles without randomly slamming on the brakes.
Still a few moments of protest but overall HE WAS SO GOOD. I’m not sure he’s a fan of that bridle, but the bit is definitely his favorite so far and he’s really trying to meet me in the middle as far as contact on the reins. And he so politely picked up the canter both ways when I asked - that’s new.
Since his appetite has been meh lately, the last few days I’ve been top-dressing his senior with Ultium - I don’t know if that’s what did it, but he came out of the stall with some definite fuel in the tank today. Prior to riding for the video, we made several laps around the path to get things nice and warmed up. This is actually the last section of video I took, but the rest of it was kind of tedious to watch so I didn’t include it. Also IDK what happened with the music but it cuts out for about 30 seconds somewhere in the middle Good thing I’m not getting paid for these videos!
So nice! It’s obvious Bo was someone’s well-trained riding horse. Sadly, someone, who knows who, decided to throw him away. He looks great and your steady seat is really helping him with his balance. Good job!
It looks like he’s a bit frustrated that he can’t just eat all of that grass that he’s reaching down towards!
That boy has a butt! And he picked that canter up quite nicely. I wonder if he was kind of a backyard horse and his owner(s) didn’t like to trot, so they only walked and cantered. I’ve known horses like that.
If he was used for cutting, or cow horse, or reining (?!) he may have been mostly worked in the walk and canter.
