Another New Horse - It's Bo!

@Heinz_57 would a sweet itch sheet be too hot? they all have belly coverage

I wondered about that, a lot of the ones I looked at have reviews saying they are hotter than regular fly sheets. I like the full coverage idea, though.

I know I said economical, but I’m currently eyeballing the rambos I found on sale… :grimacing: :joy:

The Schnieder’s VTek fit might work well for him. They’re designed for more upright shoulders. But man, those Rambos are nice! If you need persuading, think about how much money you’ll save by not constantly replacing fly sheets. That makes the Rambo a bargain. Right?

Yum -rambos are NICE! Forgive my horse internet shopping - its my favorite thing to do - so here are some quick findings for everyone’s favorite toothless chestnut:

Chick’s is having a fly sheet sale. This is a $70 Saxon with a belly band. I think the color would look very nice on Bo.

Smart pak also has stock-breed specific fly sheets that would probably fit his confirmation and be comfy.

This one from Weetherbeata looks to be very cool - its more of a PVC mesh as opposed to a fabric, so it appears to be more breathable.

I adore my Rambo Flybuster sheets. They fit both of my big boys very well and stay in place.

I’ve always admired that pvc mesh looking Weatherbeeta sheet but I’ve not ever tried one

Thank you! I will check all of those out.

Here’s where I struggle - if I get one of the horses a fly sheet, I feel like I ought to get the others their own as well :expressionless: and then I’m looking at spending an absolute FORTUNE on something that could literally be torn to bits in one day or end up just plain too hot to actually wear. I realize it’s my own mental hang up, trying to be “fair” to all the horses… :joy: At least the Rambos have decent resale value.

At one boarding barn where I kept my horses, the wonderful barn worker took the temperatures of horses with and without a flysheet. My pony was cooler wearing a sheet. Some are reflective and I think that makes a difference. I had that Schneider’s mosquito/fly sheet and my horses did not like it. It was very stiff and rubbed their coats.

I bought those mesh Weatherbeeta fly sheets last year and really like them a lot - which reminds me that I need to dig them out. They weren’t super expensive (on sale), fit really well, and seemed to stay pretty cool.

I also have the Schneider’s Mosquito mesh and agree they are very stiff. They have a hybrid that I got this year that works much better but probably is a bit warmer than the regular mesh. But, even humid and close to 90 here yesterday (which isn’t very common), my guys weren’t sweating at all.

Bless you, you are a very fair mother! But I’m sure that Elmo & the pony will get over their jealousy of Bo’s new summer wardrobe with a few extra carrots.

I’ve often wondered if putting a white fly sheet on my black horse would make her cooler despite the extra fabric. Did the barn worker take internal temperatures, or use an external temperature gun (like those ones that got so popular during COVID to take people’s temps)? I might have to recreate her experiment with n=1 on my horse.

He took the temperature under the fly sheet on the skin. I would imagine one of the external no-touch thermometers would work even better. Let us know what you discover!.

This worked for my black horse but he did much much prefer the Rambo. It kept him a lot cooler than being naked

I endorse the Rambo sheets wholeheartedly! Maybe you can search Facebook and find a deal?

One of these things is not where I left it… :face_with_raised_eyebrow::laughing:

Oh don’t worry, I’m Bo’s lawyer and he’s innocent.

(unless my client is Elmo, who is also innocent. No bad ponies here!)

Oooh, sneaky! Normally, I’d always blame the smaller one, but we know Bo…

Oh, Elmo is definitely the offender here… Bo would never just bust through the fence. He only messes with the gate handles.

Thankfully they get along, if they didn’t have such wildly different caloric needs they could live together happily. Those faces are saying we would like more food, please! Can’t you see we are wasting away?

Since they were safe enough when I fed and I didn’t have time to fix the fence, I left them together while I took kid to school and stopped at TSC… only to discover that literally every bag of purina senior they have is moldy. Nearly an entire pallet worth. Thankfully, they are actually marked “MOLDY” this time and are now on clearance for $5. Also thankful that I have had a fair amount of success so far in switching Bo to a more forage-based (alfalfa cube) diet, so the supply disruption isn’t panic-inducing.

But fixing fences is not exactly what I had planned for this morning. :joy:

Supervising crew on duty…

Evidence that something more questionable than just fence-busting for social time was going on…

Now, I have four lines of fence. The interior top line was broken, but that still leaves about a 2’6" jump over.

The exterior fence (photo above) was dragged down, t-posts pushed out slightly, with those questionable hoofprints on the other side, and the very bottom strand broken where it looks like hooves slid under. So most likely Elmo attempted to either jump in or jump out, but I literally cannot find a single hoof print of evidence that he was “out” anywhere beyond those huge divots (and the ground is wet still, so they would be obvious).

Curious mystery!

Elmo did once jump out of a paddock 3 years ago, at 8am on a Sunday, while I watched him out my window - for absolutely no discernable reason. He’s not a great jumper, so he went through the top line of fence and ended up with some decent cuts (different sort of fence than I have now) that earned me an emergency vet call.

And lastly, just a cute Bo face.
