Another New Horse - It's Bo!

Maybe they were playing double dutch?

They’re too cute! They look quite proud of themselves.

They look quite smitten with each other…

They started out as tolerated acquaintances, but now they are kind of buds. I sometimes turn them out together, but Bo has to eat solo so it ends up being somewhat of a pain with all the moving back and forth.

Don’t tell DH, but I’m thinking I might need to re-configure the stalls-with-paddocks soon  Putting those things together was a bit of a chore, and I’m not sure if it’s even possible to move the roofed portion without totally disassembling. The original configuration was designed for my two ponies who used to be turned out together, so I had to subdivide and switch things up when the need for individual turnout came up.

What type of building do you have that you can disassemble the roofed portion? Sounds intriguing. Is there a way you can have a paddock/pasture for both boys, but have a small section fenced off for Bo so he can have a quiet space to eat? Then when he’s done you can just open a gate?

I’ve put mine on notice that sometime before winter I want to rearrange my barn. All of my walls can come down and get rearranged.

They are freestanding stalls with covers, this:

Everything comes apart - it’s all held together with clamps, except for the sheet metal roof which is screwed to the frame (there are crossways supports also). Obviously it can be unscrewed and then reattached, but what a chore that would be. I don’t really see any way to move it otherwise, though… it’s too big and awkward and heavy except maybe if I had four big men to walk it to it’s new location.

oh yeah, the are way too pleased with their own shenanigans. It is adorable how tiny and fluffy Bo’s forelock is compared to Elmo’s luscious locks.

Well, with much gnashing of teeth and swearing under my breath,

the fly sheets have been ordered. Yes, plural… one for each of the adults (youngster can fend for himself). They better act grateful - except Bo, who I know will do his shark impressions no matter what I’m putting on him.

Could you call the local football team coach, or a landscaping company? “I’ll pay four guys $30 each for 10 minutes of work moving this thing” or some such?

Looks like heaven to me.

Which ones did you end up going with?! Let us know how they work out! I know of a very bug-sensitive mare that would probably really benefit from a fly sheet, if it doesn’t get too hot.

These two – Replace “waltz” with “lope”

Go with the Rambo.

This year I bought the Amigo Mio fly sheet in bronze and was disappointed to see fabric pulls after the first use. I bought the Rambo Flybuster as a back-up in case the Mio falls apart. Each has the neck attachment. I’ve been alternating them weekly, taking them home to wash by hand with a squirt of dish detergent in a 5-gallon bucket. Though they don’t show the dirt, they get remarkably gross. I have to empty the bucket six or seven times until the water runs clean.

The Mio seems to be holding up. The Rambo, though, is sturdier all around, and has a belly flap and more secure fastenings. The Rambo mask, which I bought separately, has a piece of plastic reinforcement poking out, which doesn’t thrill me. I may be able to thread it back and stitch in place. The detachable nose guard gets super-gross from dipping into the trough and then grazing. I hose it off each time I remove the whole get-up.

The Rambo was more than I wanted to pay, but I see now it’s on sale. Though no one really needs two sheets for one horse, I like a fresh one while the other gets laundered. If I ever need to buy another, I’d choose the Rambo.

Edit: This was in response to @firecracker’s inquiry, for comparison shopping

Bo’s forelock looks like a naughty sibling got hold of the scissors and went all I Want To Cut Hair And Open My Own Salon When I Grow Up while mum was distracted on the phone. And the sibling got in trouble because now Bo’s school photo looks like, well, THAT, but one day we’ll look back at this unfortunate episode as a family and laugh because darn if Bo doesn’t look cute. … We’re not laughing at you, Bo. We’re laughing with you.

The Rambos, two regular flybusters and one with the ‘vamoose’. They are on sale at Smartpak, State Line Tack, and Chewy right now for $140-160, so it seemed like too good of a deal to pass up. The other brands I was eyeballing were close to that price, so Rambo it is!

Elmo’s may be like a dress on his big body with short legs, so we’ll see.

And you just made my day!

Is the Vamoose the “no fly zone” ones? I can’t ever recall lol.

Good to know, thank you for all the information! Sounds like Rambo is the way to go! I love Rambo blankets, but have never used their fly sheets before.

Yep! Looking at my order confirmation now, I guess I got two of those and one regular flybuster.
