Another New Horse - It's Bo!

IMHO, Bo looks good.
Compared to where you started, make that:
:tiger:GRRREAT!

You may be seeing him with Worryeyes :worried:
I know I do that with my tried-to-founder mini.
If he takes even the least bit suspicious step… :scream:
Relax & let things roll while we get through Summer.
Agree with @MunchingonHay , heat does stuff

Don’t get me wrong! He does look good. And he’s put a few pounds back on lately, so I’m fine with his weight at this point. We just need to build back some topline muscle - I had eased off the “real” work in favor of just letting him take me for walks around the property a couple times a week, but I think building a bit more trotting and cantering into his routine will do him some good. He’s certainly got the energy for it. He’s had a couple weeks completely off due to all the stupid adult-y stuff I had going on, but I got him out on the lunge line today.

And convinced him to pose, if just for a minute.

Are you familiar with Jec Ballou’s work? She’s on FB and has some wonderful videos and exercises to build up muscle, supporting muscle groups, etc. Her ideas on hill work have been super for me, even when it’s hot hot hot.

Yes, I have her book! I should probably pull it out and revisit.

In other news, I really need to get on the ball with finding Bo (and Cooper) his own saddle. Elmo’s saddle is being re-made due to some issues with the leather on the first one, and the new one should be done next month I believe - once it gets here, I will have to send the old one back. I don’t want to muddy the waters trying to break in new flocking by putting it on multiple horses, so I guess I better start saddle shopping for the other two ASAP. :expressionless:

I hate saddle shopping!

Good luck! I also hate saddle shopping! Hence why I’ve been rehabbing my eventer Appendix mare in a western saddle since she has officially grown out of my jump saddle. I know she’s going to need a wider jump saddle, but I’ve been putting it off for as long as I can lol

It’s really one of my least favorite things to do. And this time I’m sticking with shopping used, which it seems most fitters don’t want to fiddle with. I understand that getting everybody to buy new is where the $$$ is, and it usually offers the best fit, but I just can’t do that this time around. At least Bo and Cooper seem to have relatively “normal” backs, not that that helps me much.

It would be a miracle if somehow the same saddle could work for both horses, so I don’t have to buy two…but that seems like a lot to ask for  and isn’t usually my luck.

And let’s not even talk about rider fit. :see_no_evil:

If you can wait until August there is a huge tack sale in the area. Always a lot of saddles.

I probably can, the remake saddle should be complete around the middle of August. I think I know which sale you’re talking about. Are prices usually pretty good? Lots of english saddles?

The one at the Expo. Prices are usually pretty good. Hit and miss and a lot of it is dependent on the seller, of course. It is very much a “flea market”, but some really good quality stuff can come through. There is usually a pretty decent mix of English/Western, although it varies year to year. Usually there are a couple of therapy riding groups or equine rescues selling stuff as donations.

Like all flea markets….be there when it opens.

Our new night turnout schedule seems to be a hit.

I’ve figured out that it is the shoulder lining on the fly sheet that is giving him rubs. :woman_facepalming: I have some fleece on hand that I am going to attempt to sew in place to fix the issue, hopefully it doesn’t make it worse! I’m not sure what else to try - the shoulder lining is a slippery fabric to start with. If I can’t fix it, he’s just going to have to live with the rubs because the bugs are pretty bad in these lower pastures at dusk (horse/deer flies especially).

Would a Sleazy protector like this be too hot for him? I used them all summer on my last horse who wouldn’t destroy fly sheets the second my back was turned and it completely eliminated the rubs.

In fact, I’m pretty sure I have one in the bottom of one of my tack trunks. I’m happy to gift it to you because my two girls don’t get rubs, thankfully. Send me a PM if you’d like it.

I’m not sure! Today and for the foreseeable future, the highs are over 100 with a heat index of 110-115. Everything is HOT. It might not be too hot to wear overnight though, the lows are around 80. If adding some material to the shoulders doesn’t work, I will definitely take you up on that!

I’ll be at the barn tomorrow for the farrier, so I’ll double-check that I still have it. If I can’t find it, I’ll let you know.

Does his have a shoulder gusset? If not that might help.
