Any Experience? Colored TB Stallions (in particular Arctic Blue & Painting Freedom)

My sister owns a solid APHA mare that we will be breeding next year, this mare is a great over fences horse and we want to breed her to a stallion that compliments that. We haven’t had much luck finding an APHA stallion we like, so have started looking at ‘colored’ TB stallions.

Two in particular Arctic Blue and Painting Freedom - has anyone had any experience with these stallions, their families, or foals? Would love to hear first person info!

Also any other recommendations from personal experience?

The two main things we are looking to improve are neck length and height. Her neck isn’t bad but I just want a bit more refinement in the neck/throat latch connection. Height wise she is 15.2, we would like 16hh at least, so looking for stallion that will add some size. Mare has a great engine, good conformation (bit of TB butt from mama  ), overall a very solid athletic horse…just need color (hopefully), height, and some neck

Mare’s pedigree can be seen here, sire old line APHA, dam TB (The Minstrel/Tom Fool)

Bright White is an all white TB who has had some success as a sport horse sire. But would you want to risk having an all white foal?

He is by Roanoke out of Artic Squaw, stands in Nevada? last I saw, and was the sire of COTHer Camohn’s stallion Wild By Design who died very, very young. In terms of a pedigree and actual experience doing something in sport, he’s, IMO, an excellent choice.

http://desertoasissporthorses.net/ Airdre Apache, who is the color source of the two young stallions you mention, is also there. If you like them, why not him?

I very much like Painting Freedom’s dam line on paper.

Thank you for the reply! I was hoping you would chime in as you have such excellent knowledge of tb sport pedigrees!

I had seen Bright White listed before, he just didn’t strike our fancy, I’m not even sure why. I did bother me that he sires a high percentage white, it’s an interesting color but I don’t particularly trust the health associated with dominant white.
Which sounds absurd, I know, since one of the stallions I listed (Arctic Blue) is DW, but it seems most of his siblings were min DW rather than max DW, and that he was the exception. I’d prefer a min DW. edited because I just call anything that looks overo, overo lol no matter what it is

Airdrie Apache, body wise I don’t think he would match up well with the mare. I think she needs more height through the leg, less through the girth, and they both look to be more of the heartgirth height rather than the longer legged look. I know it sounds silly :/. We did think about him as he came to mind quickly, was advertised long long time towards the APHA world.

As per Painting Freedom, thank you for the note on his pedigree, it did seem interesting, usual for a US pedigree maybe?

Any thoughts on Arctic Blue’s pedigree?

Thank you for the recommendations! We are looking for an overo type stallion though, have to meet the color requirements to get regular papers. Sorry, I forgot that colored could mean dilute also! They certainly are pretty stallions though, I think the dilute colored horses are a bit sportier usually than the overo/sabino tb stallions. I loved Glitter Please.

I just want to add my stallion to your choices. He was going to be available for stud this year but an injury to a hind leg has delayed us to introduce him next year. This year has become a good time to further his schooling and introduce him to what shows are all about.

Cleverly Concealed (aka Gatsby) is a dual registered cremello stallion. He holds both JC and full APHA papers. He currently stands at 16.1hh, string tested to 16.3 but I think he’ll top out at 16.2. Gatsby’s genetic makeup is ee Aa CrCr n/W5

Here is a recent picture of him - just taken while being schooled, so it’s just a casual picture. When he is a bit further advanced I will have a professional photo shoot done but for now, this is all I have.

Because it’s difficult to see his white markings as an adult, here is a just born picture showing that he is a dominant white with a completely bald face, 4 very high white stockings and quite a bit of body white. That’s why he qualifies for full APHA papers. From a color perspective you get the dilute and a very good chance of the dominant white markings.

My computer crashed and is in for repair right now and I have no pictures in my laptop but I will post some conformation and movement shots as soon as I get it back. He’s a beautifully put together boy, his temperament is absolutely kind and sensible with a good work ethic and he has very nice floaty movement.

He has been leased to Pennylane Farms so they are who should be contacted for information. He will be available AI.
Contact Sue at http://pennylanefarms.com/contactus.html or feel free to contact me if you have any general questions about him at SpecialEffectsFarm@gmail.com

We’d love to have you as a Gatsby customer and I hope you find him a good match for your mare.

Arctic Blue

Hello there.

I am actually Arctic Blue’s trainer. I started him under saddle and have brought him along. He is a lovely horse, very striking in person, with an A+ personality. He’s very sweet and has been a pleasure to work with. He, so far, has seemed to gives height to his babies. One of his two year olds is still on property, and he is probably pushing 16.1 at the moment. Blue has great bone and feet, he is still going barefoot and we’ve been showing and jumping him 3’6"-3’9" at the moment (showing at 3’3" to gain confidence). He’s got a truly fantastic front end as well, very tight with his knees

Anything you’d like to know about him, please go ahead and ask. Either I can answer it or can get you in touch with his owners.

I LOVE Artic Blue and love how he is being brought along!

He is by a stallion that I used to own - Panoramic - who was a $600,000 purchase by the Saudi’s and is by Theatrical out of a mare named Mint Leaf by Capote

Every owner who has a Panoramic offspring all say the same thing about them - user friendly, smart, kind, athletic, terrific movers, talented over fences, etc

Blue is black based and is a Dominant White so bred to a solid APHA mare, you should get a nice amount of markings on the foal - some stockings, face white, maybe some body white. The chances of an all white foal out of a solid mare are slight.

Blue is a beautiful mover and an even fancier jumper. He was in a recent Greg Best clinic and Greg had a lot of nice things to say about him and his ability and form over fences.

The one thing that sticks in my mind the most about him is his attitude, especially for a young stallion. His first show was a schooling show with a million ponies and young riders who are not schooling ring savvy and I know his owner was concerned and intended to pull him out of there if the activity was overwhelming to him. He took it all in stride and didnt bat an eye. Ponies riding up his rear end, cutting him off - it was a non issue for him and a positive first show experience for everyone

A couple more to look into - Sinatra’s Reply (FL or TN), Blue Eyed Streaker (KY), Four Feet of Snow (MT), there’s a beautiful grey overo TB stallion out in BC who’s name escapes me right now, and if I can think of anymore I’ll post them as well

Good luck in your search!

The one in BC is a Snowbound son, isn’t he? Name is something Paisley or maybe I’m thinking of another horse.

THATS it! Snowbound Paisley! Thanks

I have a mare bred to Arctic Blue for 2014. One of the reasons I went with him were because of his neck and height. I also love the way he jumps. I owned a stallion related to him and he also had the natural jump.

Special Effects, are there any plans to send your boy through the stallion testing to get him approved for any of the WB registries? He’s beautiful!

I have to say I love seeing the foal photos and then the grown up photos, its a good thing you have the foal photos lol that is amazing! I’ve passed the information along to my sister.

He is a good looking guy, how is the training coming along? Getting that color combo certainly was a one in a million, wow, I bet he garners a lot of attention no matter where he goes.

Thank you also for chiming in, I never saw Panoramic in person but he is a lovely stallion. Do you have any photos or videos of his other foals under saddle? I’d love to see them for comparison sake.

Do either of you have any photos of the foals that AB has on the ground?

I’ve liked him for years now also, I looked up his website but its hard to tell sometimes with how outdated sites get  I’ll have to send an email over.

I am Cleverly Concealed (aka “Gatsby”'s) guardian for the time being.

Would just like to ad to this thread a few deserved lines on his behalf.

He is a four year old stallion who really is just a big kid at heart. He gives his all to anything we ask of him and is a pleasure and an honor to have at our farm.
He has beautiful movement, a great attitude, and one of the nicest conformations there is to be had.
Gatsby is still in his training and even though I would have loved to have bred him this year, I have restrained myself from doing so.
It is more important to me to have a well rounded, sane minded, and respectful stallion to handle, rather that a bunch of foals on the ground just to “see what he would throw”.

Been down that road and completely blame myself for ruining a perfect prospective by introducing him to the breeding shed far too soon.

So…He will just have to wait one more year to learn the ABC’s when it comes to the mares!

If you have any further questions concerning Gatsby, please feel free to email me at pennylane@golden.net

There was one APHA cross that was going under saddle. I’ll see if I can dig that footage up and post it for you

Here are some pictures of him through the last year or so. Pretty much from his yearling years as we’ve worked with him (trying to make sure he stays a gentleman!) Through no fault of his own, injuries have kept me from being more pro-active in getting more utd shots but as my shoulders strengthen, I plan to remedy that. But hopefully this gives an idea of what he is all about. (Thanks to ACC Photography for the beautiful at liberty shots and to Blazing Colours Farm for working with him in his younger years so I could get the indoor shots)

‘My’ plans for him are on hold as I go through a nasty split up. When the dust settles, I’ll see where I am financially (I’ve worked for him for years and am now officially unemployed). Yes it’s something I’d love to do but paying the mortgage takes priority. lol Gatsby’s young so I hope that affords me some time to do all the right things with him and he’s capable, so I hope I don’t let him down and give him the chance to show the world.

And thank you  I think he is too.

Here you go. If you go to Panoramic’s FB page

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Panoramic/141941962516424

You can see a bunch of pictures of him, his offspring, a lot of Artic Blue and several of Blue’s offspring. February 2012 will take you to pictures and video clips of “Cole” - the APHA gelding by Panoramic

I am still on as Admin on Panoramic’s page even though he is no longer owned by me or living in North America. As his foals start arriving in 2014, I will be updating his FB page accordingly

Good luck in your decision!
