Any idea what brand this tack trunk is?

She was told it was McGuinn, no tag, no identification markings.

Well, it is certainly “McGuinn-esque”.
Does brand really matter as long as it’s a well-made trunk?

Looking to buy to refurbish…so it kinda matters.

I know/have Phoenix West/Warner’s trunks. Those are the only other manufacturer that was around way back when, so far as I know. They typically made the trunks you’d see on the West Coast and I think McGuinn farms did the same for the East Coast.

In any caseThe inner trays don’t look like anything I have seen built into a Warner’s/Phoenix West trunk. Also, the wood stain looks lighter than what they have made.

But! I’ll bet you could send those pictures to ether company and get a definitive answer. IME, Phoenix West, at least, knows their stuff well. If they made it, they will be able to identify it.

I have a circa 1989 Warners. Not similar if the trays, hardware and lid chains are original.

I have a circa 1995 warners, and agreed it doesn’t match that. Good idea to contact McGuinn and just ask them.

There are other companies that made them on the east coast in the 80’s. Contact the company and ask. Might be a special mark somewhere they added.

 “Refurbish”? By sending to mfr?
Bet you can contact McGuinn & see what they say.

My bet is McGuinns. I have McGuinns, Phoenix West, and a Warner. If it’s good price, I would buy it. McGuinns will want you to send the trunk to them to refurbish. Phoenix West will sell you panels to do it yourself. My McGuinns trunks are my favorites.

McGuinn will refurbish Phoenix West/Warners or their own. From what I have heard the work is beautiful and they look like brand new trunks.

I have a mcguinn that’s about 10 years old. The outside looks very similar, but the grooming tray and chains are different. I will add that I just asked about having mine recovered and it was quite expensive. To the point where I should just buy a new trunk after shipping

I will add that the Mcguinns are tough as nails, but the old colors were navy red and white, and the new ones are Black and Tan.

This is not a McGuinn. I have had several, all makes and models. The inside is much thicker and the chains (which they no longer use) much sturdier.

I’ve seen refurbished McGuinns and they look like-new. They do an incredible job.

That being said, I don’t think this one is a McGuinn trunk. The wood just looks thinner/cheaper than what I expect from their trunks. So I guess another brand.

That being said, if the price is right and McGuinn will refurbish it-- I wouldn’t say no. It’s still a nice looking trunk.

The old Warners trunks did use those chains. It kind of looks like a Warners but they had a handled tote with the flat tray, not two flat trays inside the trunk. I would caution you to price out what it would cost to refurbish a new trunk because by the time you pay to ship it both ways, recover the front and then restain etc, you’ll probably be close to a new trunk.

If this is just a trunk to keep at home, no worries, but if you need it to match the other trunks at the shows, you might be better off to just buy new (or find one in your barn colors that just needs a new front panel or lid-depending on the barn’s customizations)

Thanks all, I (also) have a mcguinn that is wood, and it doesn’t match that trunk’s look in the trays or interior.

I have found four trunks that are all reasonably priced, and I think it would still be less expensive to have any one of them refurbished than buy new. It is 600 for the refurbishing, then 150 for shipping. Two of the trunks are not far from mcguinn so that makes it easy.

My other option is to refurbish my existing mcguinn into vinyl, but it’s just so beautiful, I don’t know that I can bring myself to do that.

Is anyone in Michigan? I have a great lead on this trunk, and a real, actual mcguinn (wood with chrome) for a super price, but I don’t think the shipping will be worth it.

Looks like a Warner’s trunk from the 80’s.

I’m not sure it is a McGuinn either - mine is circa early 90’s and it is just much better finished on the inside (darker stain too, although I suppose that might be slightly variable, even though I have never seen a lighter stain used), I kept my horses around the corner from them for a few decades - I’ve seen a few McGuinn trunks in my day, in fact for the longest time I didn’t even know there was another option!

I have a couple 80s Warner’s trunks that did have those chains. I think nearly all of them are broken now so they were not the best chains for sure. They tended to get twisted up which eventually led to weak spots. The one I have from the 90s switched to the better hinges. The main hardware seems more similar to older Warner’s than McGuinn. I haven’t seen that handled tote from either of them, though. As far as wood color, I think that stain would be a reasonable color for an older Warner’s in oak to look like now if it spent a lot of time in the sun. The inner trays certainly look like the color of the old Warner’s I have.

I have an older Warner tack trunk that was given to me, are they still in business? I’m getting mixed answers when I ask Google. I would like to replace the panels.
