We have a big, ISH, maiden mare that was last bred on July 19 last year. Vet started her on Equidone July 14 when there was NO udder development. We’re on our second tube (at $90/tube, Thank You) and now just seeing a “bit” of udder development. We’ve been breeding for over 30 years and I’ve never had this issue. How worried should I be?? No softening of her butt either…yet!
I have no words of wisdom - just jingles!! Keep us updated and I look forward to reading what others with more experience than I have to say.
Hang in there. I think the record is 445 days ( with a healthy foal)
As a maiden my TB mare went 374 days. Little udder until 24 hours before she foaled a lovely healthy filly. This 15 years ago, pre-rx. We just waited. FWIW she was also bred “late” in the prior year with last cover date around the same day was your mare. Also FWIW when I bred the 374 day filly 10 years later she carried her first colt 370 days. Jingles. Its very nerve-racking.
Do not worry. One of our maiden mares delivered a perfectly normal foal at 390 days last year. Textbook delivery. Just shy of 13 months. I have had many mare deliver at 12 months plus.
Nature has its own way of deciding when the time is right…
Thank you all for your GOOD “takes” on our situation!!! The mare is the ONLY foal of our beloved, deceased, Jagged Illusion!! And very cherished! She is almost 17 hands, 3/4 TB- Irish Sport Horse and a very LOUD overo/sabino/dominant white, black based mare…bred to our 16.3 hand. “Challenged”, TB stud. She doesn’t look the least bit stressed or uncomfortably huge…doesn’t look like she’s in any hurry to be a mother, either!! I’ve been keeping her in paddocks within eye site of the house, but she isn’t showing any of the tell-tale signs yet, either!! I’ll be less stressed reading these “slow” delivery stories!! Thanks again…I’ll keep you posted!!
I know a mare who delivered at about 13 months, too.
She had been bred the year before, and since there was no foal at 11-ish months, she came back to the stallion to be bred again. Didn’t like the stallion, so wasn’t bred. The owners figured they would wait a bit and see. One morning, under the apple trees, there was a healthy foal with the mare, making that cute foal noise
This might be your year to join the 400 club .

NO thank you!!! I’d be a wreck!!
I had a maiden mare that went over 390 days. Foal was FINE, a bit lax in the fetlocks, but turned out to be a lovely boy. Four years old now, and starting his riding career (and quite fancy). Some of them just take longer to cook!
Sorry wrong thread!
One of my broodmares usually went at lest 385 days with no problems
I feel for you because I can’t stand the suspense with foaling mares, drives me nuts. I’m not a vet, but I’d definitely be giving domperidone. Though I think you could get it cheaper, I pay about $60/tube. The foal will be born when it is either fully cooked or you are at your wits’ end worrying over it, whichever comes first.

I had a different, considered “expensive” vet out today to preg check some mares…he said to keep up with the domperidone, but his is only $55 a tube!! Think I got “gyped” by my “good old” vet!! And I can really identify with this: “The foal will be born when it is either fully cooked or you are at your wits’ end worrying over it, whichever comes first”.

On the topic of the Domperidone - some vets sell prescription meds at cost, others mark up substantially. I don’t quite understand why there is so much variation in the industry! My regular vets seem to mark up most meds 50% to 100%. One of my friends’ vets sells at 10% over cost. I guess they all have their profit built in differently? I wouldn’t say you were “gypped” - your vet may charge less in other areas, and tries to make up a bit by a mark up on meds?
The way I started handling this (with my vets) - if I only need a weeks worth of something, I buy from them. If my horse will be on something for quite a while, I ask them to do a script for me - and buy direct. I don’t avoid all their meds, most of the time, I don’t have long term meds, so they still get their profit. And I’ve never run into any pushback doing this.
You can always check out the cost of meds - Valley Vet is a good source.

I LIKE the vet that charged more…she is a friend and was a riding lesson student and I have her private/unlisted number on speed dial for emergencies…I was just a bit surprised when the vet considered “expensive”, charged $35/tube less!! We are in VERY rural Oklahoma where most people pasture, breed then gather up “live” babies the next year!! I doubt many bother with Domperidone!! Everything is going UP/getting more expensive…except MY income!!
Mare is on 3rd tube and “maybe” a bit puffier in her udder!!
Perhaps Dom Pèrignon will be an appropriate name for the new arrival, combining celebration with medication?
