Is anyone selling anything, anywhere? To me, it seems the market has completely stalled. It seemed like it went from some activity to none, and I mean on all levels, from foals to upper level, nicely bred, nicely going dressage horses. Are you breeders having any luck? What’s selling, and are people still dropping prices or holding onto their young stock and riding horses waiting for an economic recovery?
Not breeding stock, but this horse sold for full asking price, pending PPE, after being on the market for 5 days.
But, then, unfortunately, PPE ended in 2 minutes with a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation.
However…it was 5 days, & was full asking price. Shocker of a PPE, for sure.
That’s a real shame! What a nice horse. What will you do with him now?
Some interest…
Just sold one to Texas this past week. PPE was fine thank goodness.
Mare has a foal on her so will be staying with me until the foal is weaned in the early fall.
Bit of interest in her 2011 colt by Banderas…tall chestnut boy…lovely temperament.
Have a 2 year old gelding for sale as well, but so far everyone wants him three and backed!

We just sold and shipped a yearling filly by Sir Donnerhall out of a Fidertanz mare to California last week. We accepted $1000 off the original price because of the shipping expenses incurred by the buyer.
Interesting thread and glad to see some input. I’m putting out some ads on a couple of 4 y.o. wb prospects. One is well started, ammie type and one I’m just now getting on but OMG is she smart! Any tips on where the buyers are looking?
What is the market like for these?

Getting inquiries on foals and broodmares but no solid sales yet…priced so there is a little negotiating room.
Did sell one gelding, one yearling, a two year old and have interest in low priced retired Arab mare (very nicely bred, broke to ride, no longer carries pregnancies although she cycles well…took her as a sort of half rescue kind of thing and really need her gone).
If not getting sales pretty good by mid August will be taking some of horses to NRCHA sales in late Sept. and may take the broodmares for sale there as well. One 3 year old gelding going to the Red Bluff gelding sale in Feb.
On Monday, he goes to New England Equine to try & convert his heart over to normal sinus rhythm.
After that…I have no idea! If he doesn’t convert, I figure I’ll own him forever and either I need to become a DQ and get serious about dressage or he needs to learn to like xc and get serious about being an event horse. He’s perfectly fine to ride & work …shows not the slightest indication of anything being wrong. Until we find where his levels of exercise intolerance are, he’ll just continue to work and progress in his training until he tells us that we’ve reached his limit.
If he does convert…I guess I’ll find out how many/if any people are interested in a very nice young horse who used to be in atrial fibrillation, but is now fine. I’m guessing that is limited market, and I’ll still end up owning him forever.
IME, young colts do not sell as easily as fillies. However, when they are of riding age, most people want geldings! There are exceptions, though. I find that if a young horse has trendy bloodlines or is of very, very high quality, they are being sold quickly.
We are doing very well thankfully. Sold a yearling and 2 year old by Guaranteed Gold in the last 3-4 months. Sold a mare in foal to GG in the last 2 months. Sold my cremello TB filly by GG within 4 days of her being born and I had 3 people after her - all on different continents - and this was with “0” advertising. People just saw that she was born and enquired on her. Already have an enquiry on the in utero foal by GG on my new mare that hasnt even been bred yet, have an in utero enquiry on my Nightlight mare that was bred to Bliss MF but she wont be checked until the 24th so wont do anything with that one until she is. Working on a deal now with my yearling Four Feet of Snow colt as well
I get probaby 2-4 enquiries a month for Anglo Arabian foals by my stallion, but there are none left to sell so I am now looking at buying an Arab mare to produce at least one a year.
Already getting enquiries on the 2012 Pearlescent and Puchi Trap in utero foals by GG
If this hasnt been my best year so far, its pretty close to it. I have no complaints at all …
I’ve sold everything I had for sale besides the two 2011 colts (we breed hunter ponies).
09 and 2010 were dead as a doornail here. Sold 1 5 YO going under saddle last fall and another one of under saddle age is leaving next week. Once he goes my time will be focused on starting the two 3 YOs that need to be started under saddle and figuiring out what is wrong with the 5 YO mare. She is OK in the barn and ground driving but a witch under saddle. She was OK when first started us then became a behavioral issue. At first I thought she was just being a snot when she got into real “work” but now I am not so sure and think there may be some back pain issues going on and need to get her vetted out.
I’ve sold everything I had for sale except a lovely two year old large pony filly. Haven’t tried to move her to be honest…something will materialize at the right time.
Four have sold this Spring, all riding age, three going well under saddle. Under saddle has always been our market but occasionally a yearling or two year old will sell.
Love, love, love that Appy! Wish he was a she .
I am selling ammie friendly horses that can go and show either in hunters, dressage or eventing, need to be not green and have show experience, the easier the better! If I had a barn full coul sell them, but for soem reason for the first time in MANY years I have no marketing boarded client horses to sell!
I’ve been surprised at the demand for foals this year. I’ve sold all of the foals I had for sale (easily, extremely quickly, and with backup buyers for every one) this year, and just sold an imported broodmare to a family who bought one of the foals also. They plan to start her under saddle.
Now I’d love some buyers for really nice geldings going well under saddle!!
I’ve already had an inquiry about my Sir Gregory filly who was born Thursday. I’ve put up zero ads for her, so this was quite a pleasant surprise.
Weirdly enough, our “market” this year was open, middle-aged, badly advertised (or completely unadvertised), servicably sound broodmares - two are sold & we’ve gotten an inquiry on a 3rd, who apparently was found via internet search (the ad was so old, only could be found as cached).
I don’t think there’s a lesson to be learned from this. But mentioning that in each case, people wanted something specific & tracked it down.
We had no luck with selling youngsters, although had been approached & wooed for a package deal (2 2 y.o.s. & 2 3 y.o. race-bred TBs) earlier in the year (before the buyer disappeared entirely).
Over the past several years, our limited sales have been mostly middle-aged riding geldings.
I have had a number of inquiries recently about my 2 year olds from people seeking upper level prospects that will be ready to start soon. I don’t think that is surprising though because that age typically represents very good value. Like many breeders, I don’t move the prices up much on my youngsters from weanling until they are started, but once started and solid WTC the price goes up considerably.
All I can say is I wish I was shopping this year instead of last year! There are a hell of a lot of nice horses recently started under saddle in the 10-20k range. I had a terrible time finding them in that price range last year.
