Apoquel

Recently become available – can a dog be on it permanently? Any experiences?

Worked like a charm (like, immediately) for my dog’s seasonal allergies earlier this spring… no side effects and he stopped his obsessive licking/chewing enough to let his skin calm down. The vet only gave him a week’s worth, then had to switch to Vanectyl-P due to an (unrelated) yeast infection that popped up. Super happy that it’s available in Canada now!

My dog has been on it for over a year. It’s been a miracle drug for her.

One of my dogs has been on it continuously for nearly two years with no issues. It works great for her.

There was a recent thread about Apoquel. It is a LIFE SAVER for one of my dogs. We just had another vet check 2 weeks ago and he is amazed that it is working so well and said not all dogs with as severe allergies as he has have such drastically amazing results. Here is the link to our other recent thread: http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/showthread.php?489492-Apoquel-for-itchy-dogs

Wish it had been available for my last dog, he had a terrible time with itchy yeasty skin. If they could be on Apoquel long term it would sure be nice, if there are no side effects. My dog seems so much more comfortable and we are not woken up by the scratch, scratch, scratch, jingle jingle jingle.

Literally just had this conversation with my last appointment. It often has to be used life-long. So far we are not seeing any long-term effects from it.

Check out the Dog Allergy International group on FB. Lots of users there who have used Apoquel. The feedback is mixed, but mostly positive. There’s also a lot of good information on dietary changes and supplements.

Works miracles most of the time. My sister’s pittie had no response at all, so they ended up going the allergy testing/desensitization shot route with good results.

It’s been fantastic for my sheltie. She’s pretty much allergic to the state of Maryland (plus fowl, most grains…) and previously had to be on Temaril-P. With Tameril we had to do regular blood tests but with Apoquel my vet is happy to monitor her symptoms. It’s not perfect but it keeps her comfortable.

Our clients are loving it and having great results. Worked great for my dog!

I have only heard one client say it wasn’t working for her dog. Most people love it. Just as a reminder though, it only blocks the itch, not the reason for the itch. It can be used life-long, and many dogs at the clinic I work for are on it for life.

I’ve heard mixed reviews at work. No feed back over long term use yet. Some dogs it does great, others it doesn’t do a thing.

Just started one on this after a failed food trial. It did work immediately and that’s one of the really nice things about it. Said it starts working in 4-6 hours.

The derm vet requires blood work after they’ve been on it for 3 months and then annually to check for side effects. Said she’s had only one dog that had bone marrow suppression and it went back to normal as soon as the medication was stopped. But they have quite a few on it, so low incident of problems. What what I’ve read online, it’s a good idea to do the blood work as the bone marrow suppression is a fairly rare but known possible side effect.

This is very encouraging. My dog is currently on Kangaroo special veterinary food for a trial, but I have little faith, and it is bloody expensive.

Apoquel did absolutely nothing for my boy.
Changed his food to salmon/trout limited ingredient and added both Salmon Oil and Missing Link for coats. He is doing very well.

This stuff is MAGIC.

I worked with a doggy dermatologist during the trials for this drug. It was absolutely amazing and even after the trial most of the participants continued on it. They were monitored for a very long time and had patients on Apoquel for 2 years with essentially zero side effects.

I think it’s working - Rayne food

My vet put our itchy Boxer on Rayne Clinical Nutrition Kangaroo diet.
She’s on a strict diet and nothing else is allowed. She does not love it, but I’ve never heard of a dog starving itself to death and she’s looking good.

She is not scratching and itching - such a relief not to hear the dingle, dingle dingle of those dog tags.

It is expensive, but then so was the other quality food I was feeding her - so what’s a little more $$ for relief, and not having to rely on pills?

Two weeks into a four week trial…

IAMS also makes a kangaroo diet. Maybe worth seeing if your vet thinks that one would work as well. Your pup may like it better.
