Appaloosa Sporthorses-any others out there?

Ru![](by Creek,
My friend says that she’s been talking to you about Kool-i. I really hope she can get him. I first saw him online and sent his link to her, but she had already beaten me!

I don’t breed, but I have my 100% FPD gelding, IO Ima Braveheart by Oaks Lyon Heart. I haven’t been able to keep up on his training with my class load, but last year we got to compete at USPC nationals. I’m really hoping to have more time to ride soon.

My own Appy Sport horse collection

Hi!

My little prelim guy is a 7 year old Appy/TB cross… no color though. Here is a link to him getting a tune up with the trainer at an event
http://hoofclix.smugmug.com/gallery/6150879_vSoHC#387567005_vLuhp

His dam is an awesome App Mare and is bred to Stiletto for a 2009 baby- should be an amazing athlete

video of mare- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-rjW4B3-aY

and… because I am addicted, I am bringing home one of Rugby Creeks 2008 foals in just a couple short weeks

![]( have one! I love him. He’s a 15.2 gelding by Dreamfeature who is by Dreamfinder.
I’ve trained him in Huntseat and he’s jumping and trail riding and doing a bit of showing.

He’s really smart and moves really well. I bought him a year ago as an unbroke 4 year old. I broke him myself and have done all the work on him.

You need to bribe him. Kool-i is too cool to not come to GA. Sending you an email!

Lovely horse.

Brothers

Holly,

You should definitly bring Kool-I down. If anything it would ease my guilt at being “blinded by spots” and buying a foal when I have the exact same breed cross due next spring! Head Slap

st![](ll working on it…

and now… so fleckers won’t feel left out and “threatened” by his baby brother…

here’s my appy sport horse!! Fleck is 3/8th TB… and definitely APP! the rest!

isn’t he awesome!!!

but yes… still working on getting kool to come home with me!!! keep your fingers crossed!

I don’t breed but I have an app that I absolutely adore. I trained him at the riding school I used to work at, and when they closed I had to have him for myself! He hasn’t gone hugely far in his training due to being so safe for beginners, but he’s done a bit of hunter/jumper and dressage. When I have more time and money I’d love to try eventing with him. He’s brave and honest and has pretty nice form o/f and under saddle.

I actually have recently been doing research on breeding sporthorse appy’s. I was talking to Virginia at JG Appaloosa’s and she told me that you can only cross Appy’s with QH’s, Arabs, or TB’s (or Appendix QH) and still have a registerable Appy.

So I’m a bit confused by the people on the thread who say they are breeding Appy sport horses but are crossing Appy’s with warmbloods… and actually trying to breed the Appy out of the line and just keep the color.

Have the rules changes? Or are you just breeding warmbloods with spots and calling them Appy’s when they aren’t?

In Australia warmblood is an accepted outcross. There are many of us who feel the quarterhorse has been the downfall of the modern appaloosa and are breeding them back to the original riding type that they were. Many people realise that historically appaloosas go back to warmbloods!

The colour increases with sensible outcrossing by the way.

The halter concept has been one of the most damaging things to happen to any breed…but in particular the appaloosa. We are lucky enough to export many of our appaloosas to USA, so I guess there must be americans who arent all that happy with how things are run there.

ps. In USA can a warmblood be an appendix quarterhorse?

Would you mind explaining this statement please? I do not understnad how outcrossing with any breed that does not have “app” coloring, i.e. the lp gene, can “increase” the app color. The only way an app horse can pass on it;s color is thru the lp gene which allows the expression of app characteristics and color. This can be enhanced by the PATN gene, but without the lp gene no color can be expressed at all. An individual can ONLY carry the lp gene if they themselves show app color anr/or characteristics. And only three coat patterns, the snowcap, the fewspot and the rather rare solid with charcateristics and “pink” hoofs can be homozygous for lp, and therefor be 100% color producers (like my app sporthorse type, but ApHC registered stallion)

No an appendix QH is a registered cross between a TB and a QH. Any other cross that is not registered cannot be called “appendix” as appendix is the name of the studbook with AQHA. AQHA onlys allows outcrossing to TB’s and you cannot cross an appendix registered horse with anything but a full numbered QH (cannot cross to a TB or another appendix). However, appendix horses can be “upgraded” to regular registry, receiving a full number, upon certain race/show requirements (i.e. ROM)

The rules haven’t changed although there is some lobbying for them to be changed. I find no redeeming value in a “WB with spots” than I do a “QH with spots”! Neither is a true app in my book. However, the ApSHA (I guess that still exists) will basically registere anything with spots.

It should have read the visual colouring. Sorry.

Fewspot is homozygous…

many many of what people are passing off as snowcaps thesedays are in fact false snowcaps.Quite a few only have one app parent to start with! The colour increases phenotypically (not genetically ) with outcrossing, and gives us a chance to remodel our ‘goal’ with a fresher genepool. I think a few generations down the track will be interesting!
