Appaloosa Sporthorses-any others out there?
The rules haven’t changed although there is some lobbying for them to be changed. I find no redeeming value in a “WB with spots” than I do a “QH with spots”! Neither is a true app in my book. However, the ApSHA (I guess that still exists) will basically registere anything with spots.
I don’t like the QH with spots or the WB with spots either. I mean fine if thats what people want or want to breed but they should not be called Appaloosas.

I am interested in trying to breed Appaloosas who are versatile, hardy, intelligent, sporty, etc. What I believe the breed is supposed to be. I am still doing more research to refine what my goals are and how to reach them. I would like to try to keep alive what the breed is supposed to be. I was inspired by my own Appaloosa. Who is sired from a long line of Appy studs, but his father is, unfortunately, not registered. His grandfather on his fathers side was. His sire’s side has some racing history in it, and were capable jumping horses. His mother is a registered QH but not of the “short & wide” variety. She is 16hh and well proportioned and balanced. More what I grew up knowing a QH to be.

Unfortunately I can’t get as much information as I would like about his pedigree. He was bred a few miles from me… I found him as a yearling and approached the people to see if they wanted to sell him. They ended up giving him to me, signed him over and everything. They just wanted him to have a good home. They enjoy coming over to see his progress and went to a show this summer to see him go in a couple flat classes. He’s 4 now. He’s not registered as I mentioned his sire is not… but both his sire’s parents were registered Apps. I could hardship register him but I don’t see the point.

Here is a picture of him as a 2 yr old:

I guess hybrid vigour is something that all stud books have used from one time to another, especiallyWhen one considers when the app came from originally.

Did you know that the original hanoverian warmblood used app/knab/tiger in its original breeding? Some documentation of it here

It should have read the visual colouring. Sorry.

Fewspot is homozygous…

many many of what people are passing off as snowcaps thesedays are in fact false snowcaps.Quite a few only have one app parent to start with! The colour increases phenotypically (not genetically ) with outcrossing, and gives us a chance to remodel our ‘goal’ with a fresher genepool. I think a few generations down the track will be interesting!
I agree that some people do not understand what a snowcap is, but my stallion is a true snowcap and has proven this thru all colored offspring from a variety of solid colored, non-app mares.

Sorry…but I am not familiar with your stallion… Any pics?

Just googled him… Lovely type. I think the TB in his breeding is very useful.
Sadly though he would not be allowed in the australian, or european appaloosa stud books due to his grey breeding. Strictly forbidden in non american studbooks, a real shame because I think he is lovely .

I have seen some very nice appaloosa sport horses from a breeder in MN. This was actually the breeder I got my Friesian Sport Horse Stallion from (mom was a tb/appy) and he did not throw any color (completely black) but she has a GORGEOUS appy sport horse stallion who has had some very nice offspring.

here is a picture of her stallion Grand Design

I too love love love appys. I’d be interested to follow some of my mare’s lines. She’s 22 now and in her day was a phenomenal mover. She jumps like a cat and is very bold. Looking at her lines, I’m not sure where she got it. She may just be one of those freaks.
Here is her dam’s pedigree. I’ll have to post her pedigree tonight.

My other appy: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/mc+cherishabull
Very athletic, but a bit lazy and super laid back. He has some foals on the ground and would love to see them. I hear he throws his mind. He’s was since gelded, which was before I got him.

Both are extremely sweet and loving.

DancingAppy,

I am sure we must have spoken before, but my mare is also by Chelsea’s Ghost. She’s appyxtb, bay with snowflake. She is nine now and is just an energizer bunny. I am not registered, so I can’t post her photo. I just love that mare.

I also bought a now 2.5yo AppyxTrak gelding from www.gatewayfarm.com Sire is Wild Time Joker, dam is Hanalei Bay. He is just inching over 16h and is bay with a 60% blanket with peacock spots.

My crossbred was part of my pinto WB stallion’s test crop (sending a WB stallion to the 100 day test costs a mint, and we wanted offspring on the ground and taken to inspections before committing to anything).

The dam, a snowcap Appaloosa is a horse that I took to Novice Eventing and 2nd level Dressage. She is a very nice little mare, but in my case I feel that my pintaloosa WB x foal (I call him a crossbred, as that is what he is) is the better mover and I am excited to ride him in a few years.

I don’t see what is wrong with crossbreeding in this fashion in the least. I do understand your objection to calling the resulting foal an Appaloosa however, regardless of the coloring it has.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! Grey cannot “skip” generations, so if the horse isn’t grey he cannot produce grey!!! Obviously they have NO idea of how color genetics work! He has never produced a grey (nor will he, unless the mare is grey!) At any rate here he is:

if you down this page, you will see a three year old filly by him (Second photo):

Yep… I agree.(Except that they DO most certainly have a full understanding of colour…hence the no grey rule.) However, their argument is that he would not be by a registerable stallion, since his SIRE couldnt be registered.Still…I think he is really nice indeed!

2Mares, I think your horse gets good quality from the Mr Spotted Bull line. Mine’s dam has the same breeding and he is a fabulous hunter type.

I personally prefer the more TB-QH types, which tend to be more flowy and huntery than the “sporthorse types”. Love it when they get a nice snowflake butt or conservative blanket on them.

I love this breeding for hunters:
www.hopescreekranch.com
She breeds nice moving horses with great looks and minds. Wonderful feet too, as a side note.

However, mine did get a very Andalusian-type head way back from somewhere. It is small, but has a very noble convexity! http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m222/henlyhollow/Melheadshot2008_001.jpg

New Baby

Me new baby from Rugby Creek got here last night- Thanks Guys! And he is awesome. I am so excited. Pictures soon…

Since you guys are talking about Apps… I think you all should take a look at Virginia Hood’s JG Appaloosas. THEY are wonderful movers, Great jumpers, and have the best quality and temperment out there for sport horses. She has a proven show record BOTH In Hand and Over Fences here on the East Coast. That lady knows her business and has produced some wonderful horses. I rave her . I adore all her animals , and to me there is no other that can compair to her when it comes to Knowledge, skill , and showmanship.
JG Appaloosas and Virginia Hood at the best in App Sport Horses…
I will definitely second this!

My Appy sport horse is out of a Diamont/TB/Appy mare by a Prince Thatch son … I have his full sister as well… all tho , she did not get the lovely color he has…
A photo of him is in my profile…

A new foal to join the club…

a very good example of a FALSE snowcap.(cant possibly be homozygous since only one parent an app!)

I love this discussion! Apps can successfully compete in all disciplines. My app gelding out of a racing QH by Too Brite Nugget is very scopey over fences. I decided to breed for that type of app after finding very few available on the market. I have a couple dilute TBxApps coming next year too. Very excited to see those. I love the Confetti line horses, have two I bought from Mellanie and love them! Wine N Diamonds is for sale? He is on my short list for next year breeding, I really liked his sire. Plus hoping for a Buckshott foal, have some frozen.
Then I am breeding for a couple Knabs by Hussar! Those should be incredible if they turn out like his Euro get. Nothing is cooler than spots!

He is “Sort of” for sale! We are just not breeding him, and he deserves to be competing. I am too busy with other aspects of my farm to be able to consistently ride and show him. I cannot afford to keep him in training for competition as I did for a couple of years, so if the right situation comes along, yes I will (very reluctantly!) let him go for his own good! He is too young tos tand around doing nothing. My breeding has pretty much been put “on hold” for a while with economy and my new farm taking up so much time. I may rebreed one of my mares that I kept (and will never sell!) this spring to him, her first foal by him was and is AWESOME she is a two year old now.

Yep, we spoke before. Fancy is doing well, she’s going to take a trip to the trainers to finish up her driving training, I just don’t have the time with school and work. She’s an once-in-a-lifetime horse. I’ve now had two UL drivers tell me what potential she has for CDE, but I now have to learn how to harness her talent. Pardon the pun.

Gateway Farms has two half-Hanoverian yearlings for sale that would make a good pair. But alas, I’m a poor college kid. I’ve really liked the Hanoverian/Appaloosa cross.

ShawneeAcres, I didn’t know you were the owner of Wine N Diamonds! I used to talk appys with Tudors Diamond Jim’s owner years ago. I wanted to buy one of her stock for years. I love that line and I thought it all disappeared.
