You guys need to check out " JG Wapaloosas" . I tell you I would have a ENTIRE barn full of those talented babies if I could. You are amazing Virginia Hood.

I actually don’t agree that these cross breds should not be called Appaloosas. Appaloosas are a color breed. Appaloosas are crossbreds and the “foundation” horses had a lot of different breeds mixed in. What is acceptable according to the ApHC for breeding include TBs, QHs and Arabs…breeds that were not included in the absolute orginal Appaloosa before they were even called Appaloosas. The original Appaloosas were a combination of Spanish Barb arriving in the 16th Century and American mustangs that cross bred at liberty (and intentionally), not QH, TB and Arabs.
Furthermore, the ApHC considers Appaloosas a spotted breed…it is based on spots and Appaloosa characteristics not “pure” breeding or even type for that matter. If type were really a consideration then they wouldn’t be accepting outcrossing with 3 breeds that differ quite a bit in type (QH, TB and Arab). You must have appaloosa blood bred to a crossbred and the resulting foal have characteristics and/or color in order to have a registerable appaloosa. Even unapproved outcrosses (including grade horses) many be hardship registered with the ApHC if the offspring has Appaloosa characteristics and/or a spotted pattern. The colt must be gelded and the filly must be spayed in order to be hardship registered. At least, this is how it used to be. Perhaps they have made some changes in recent years.
Another vote for JG appaoloosas. I have two fillies by Wap’s Millenium, and they both have beauty and brains (but I may be biased ;)).

I am super excited about my appy/trak cross that is due in March. The dam is my old eventing mare who is all appy and absolutly fabulous at everything she does and the sire is Stiletto who is currently eventing at the 2* level. This foal should be what appy sport horses are all about!

Stiletto is a nice stallion. I met him last year at the ATA Annual Convention in TX. He tied for first place with Prelude by Mozart over a huge fence in the jumper stake. Is your appy mare spotted? If so, I hope Stiletto doesn’t throw his grey gene and cover up any spots the foal has.
I am also expecting an Appy/Trak foal next year in May. The sire is Trakehner stallion Tanzeln. We had a full sibling in 2007 and she is extremely athletic…loves to run and jump ditches, logs, anything she can find. www.altamontsporthorses.com/tallulahbelle.html She didn’t have spots but is still a very nice filly so I don’t mind taking the risk outcrossing her dam again knowing that I only have a 50% chance of a spotted pattern since the dam apparently carries only one spotted pattern gene (PATN). Maybe I’ll be lucky in 2009. :yes:
I really like the Appaloosa/Trakehner cross and am glad that the Trakehner stallion owners and managers I have spoken to about breeding my mares do not mind outcrossing to Appaloosas. We do breed for purebred Trakehners as well.
ETA: Oops, I think I was looking at the wrong older horse. What is the name of your other Trak x App cross?
I saw this amazing colt this year. He is (I think) 5/16 HOL blood. He was flipping lovely and I am NOT a spotted horse fan. He can move and he is so all of it!! I think she plans to keep him intact and eventually stand him at stud. I was fascinated with him. Everything was there and he had those spots!!

The 2009 foal will definitely grey. It may roan too but the grey will take the color out faster than the grey. Very cute baby. Beautiful face. Congratulations!!
Your 2008 Trak x Appaloosa boy is very handsome as well. As far as which to keep I guess you will have to see what your filly’s personality is and if she will have the conformation to do what you want. Otherwise, do you mind having a gelding or a filly? I will say that if you want to sell one you will have a much easier time selling the colored 2008 foal as a riding horse. The colored WB x App crosses are in more demand and he has cute markings as well.
We are still waiting on our Trak x Appaloosa 2009 foal (Tanzeln x Waps Skip N Line) due June 1st but expected to come earlier based on her previous foaling.
Now I must say… Love the markings on " Doo Wap" … But now explain something here.
Is your stallion related to the " Wap A Loosas" that Ginny & Jerry Hood have at the farm in Pa. Because I have noticed that many people are adding the " WAP" to their names and not really having the same blood lines.
Is it true to say that there may be other blood lines out there with the same
prefix. OR what ? Do explain this …
For I have been doing LOTS of research on the “Wap A Loosa” and reading into the Line Breeding that the Hoods have done. And I must say they have developed a wonderful and fantastic performance record with their horses.

I actually liked Doo Wap based on his movement, conformation, and Trak bloodlines first and his color/ Wap lines second.
I think that JG appies are genreally of better quality then the Wap Spotted ones but his lines do trace back to their stallion…
So are you telling me that he has the “WAP” bloodline from the JG waps.???

My understanding is that Wap Spotted was sired by Wap Spot 2 of JG (my memory may be fuzzy on this). However, Wap Spotted was sold in utero and so is not a part of the JG breeding program.
I believe that is what I remember from the JG website.
Gotcha… see I have known the Wap Line for years. way back from late 70’s to early 80’s. And just never understood the confusion. I have also been friends with the " Hoods" for years . I have marveled at their breeding program and drewelled at the wapaloosas for years also … So my interest is with the line breeding and the basic background of it all . very interesting to me to grasp and understand all of this . I think a lot of the confusion happened because Wap Spotted was the first horse registered in the Appalossa Sport Horse Association…
This led many poeple to believe he was the founding sire of the Wap dynasty of horses when in fact Wap Spot 2 was the founding sire and Wap Spotted was just one of his many children…

I was just on their site now looking back at the stallions and I see that the oldest one listed is " Wap Spot 2" back from 1972 .
