Appaloosa Sporthorses-any others out there?

Mitma, always a wealth of knowledge!

I agree that a TB would be a good choice for your mare, Miichelle. You cannot go wrong with A Fine Romance, especially if you’re aiming for a hunter. Gail is so so nice, and Fred has certainly proven himself in the event/hunter/jumper rings. You will be able to register your foal as well, which is an added bonus.

I have both an App x TB (Fappiano bred) and App x WB (Rubinstein I bred) out of the same mare (heavily Plaudit bred). The TBx was just exported to the US, and I will be keeping the WBx for myself. I got a lighter, more refined horse with the TB breeding- very catty and agile and can jump.

The WBx is only a yearling, but is very much a larger horse in bone and size. Better mover, not as quick. Her back half is a bit embarrassing right now, but:

As a foal: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v635/Randelle/DSCN7655.jpg

Obviously it all depends on the breeding, but this was my experience.

ETA: This is the mare: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v635/Randelle/DSCN0382.jpg

So many choices! It’s like going into an ice cream shop and having to decide on one flavor!

My mare already moves and jumps like a hunter and I’d like to get a lower level dressage/eventer, that’s one of the reasons I’m not leaning heavily toward a TB (although A Fine Romance is to die for!). If I bred back to the Wap lines at least I’d pretty much know what I’m getting, for the most part they stay true to type, but once again there’s the strong hunter influence/look. I like Wap Spot and he’s not as heavily Wap bred as some of the Wap stallions that are Wap Spot 2 top and bottom…

I read 7 pages of another CoTH thread last night (from 2010) about App Sporthorses and a few breeders had App mares in foal to Traks, can anyone chime in as to how those crosses turned out? There are at least a couple of Traks that I’m tempted to breed her to (and one Hanoverian that I can think of).

ETA: I’d like more substance and better feet (and HAIR, a mane and tail for swishing flies would be nice!) than what my mare has but don’t need/want a horse that’s going to be 17+hh so the stallion doesn’t have to throw huge babies. A nice user-friendly 16hh would be perfect!

Martha, I LOVE Waps Limited Edition but being as he’s Wap Spot 2 top and bottom if he were bred to Toka that might be where the line crosses from “line breeding” to “in breeding”! I can’t wait to see how he does in his eventing career!

FCF, I would have never thought of a Friesian cross but Grand Design is VERY nice! Have any of his offspring evented?

Miichelle- At my barn we have a son by Grand Design and he is debuting at 2nd level this year with his rider.

ET: I re-read that its my trainer’s barn not mine lol

I do not know if any of Grand Design’s get have evented. Contact his owner and ask. I bet you would get killer color by the cross and nice movement.

As to Trakehners who improve movement look at those of the Enrico Caruso line like Tanzeln, Incantare, and Happy Hour. Schiffon is undervalued here in the US and should not be overlooked. I’m sure there are others but those come right to mind.

www.BlackshireEquestrian.com has been crossing Appaloosa mares on Friesians and now Irish Draught stallions. If this link works they have this stunning leopard filly…black head and mane, tail, legs breathtaking Friesian traits with color that did not pade with previous foals from the cross. They started with Appys so they are drawn to spots and can’t help themselves. I admit sport can be fun.PatO

Wap Spot is the most line bred of the WS2 stallions.

Waps Applause, and Waps Rolls Royce are both out of TB mares. I have had 3 Waps Rolls Royce foals, and 3 Wap Spot foals(Wap Spot is a son of Waps Applause). All have great hind ends, and fuller manes & tails then most WBs. Also, ammy friendly indeed!

First WRR is in NJ and is a great lower level event/hunter pace/fox hunt/dressage horse. He recently did a young horse clinic with event rider Doug Payne, who said he was athletic & of ‘genuine type’, and needed to be challenged.

The 2nd WRR is our 2007 mare - hunts, paces, a good hack & super jump. She loves being in open field, and the xc jumps did not phase her. In the process of being bred to a successful Dutch stallion.

3rd WRR recently sold finished his 3yo year completing an Elementary level event(2’3), easy breezy. Here is his very first xc school
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izMyiuAYLnE

Our Wap Spot 5yo produced a fantastic filly in 2011 by Waps Millenium. She has been bred for 2013. The 4yo is to be started this summer. Also have a yearling filly who we can’t wait to see come along.

I obviously got Wap Spot’s pedigree mixed up with either WRR or WA, that will teach me to stay up half the night on CoTH. Who is the better mover WRR or WA? I’m tired of working so hard to get a horse to work from behind on the flat, I want FUN & easy!

Waps Applause has many champions & reserves in the hunter ring. As well being AHSA zone & MHSA champion.
His Facebook page has more info

Waps Rolls Royce’s successes are coming through in his get. He won 2010 Get of Sire at MD State Fair in a nice sized class. Son, James Dean won his 2008 non-TB yearling colt class at Devon. Many are started/starting under saddle, and doing great.
Many pictures of full siblings, offspring etc on his page:

So many choices, LOL!

Megan is absolutely correct, Wap Spot is one of the most intensely line bred of the JG Wap stallions… that being said, he is also the one with the “most” dressage movement… Personally, and having seen him in person, I also believe that Waps Millenium has more dressage style movement…

So, regarding other stallions, personally, I still think a proven TB would work well for producing an eventing prospect offspring… And, another one to consider, who’s owner is also here on the COTH, would be Sea Accounts, as he has enjoyed both an eventing and dressage career and is one of the few TBs competing at higher levels in dressage here in the US… I think he’s competing at 4th level/PSG, but contact his owner, Cyndi, for more information… http://www.debracysporthorses.com/DeBracy_Sport_Horses/Home.html

And, regarding Trakehner/Appaloosa crosses, there are handful of them out there… Altamont Sport Horses (http://altamontsporthorses.com/), who stands Hollywood Hot Spot, has produced several Appy/Trakehner crosses from their program… You might chat with Karri…

And, so funny what FCF mentioned about Schiffon… He is a magnificent stallion, who is owned by our dressage coach, Lea Ann Hansen… His babies are very nicely manner and have great athletism… AND, I am probably going to breed a grade, snowcap Appaloosa mare to him later this week… The mare is likely a “Wap” bred mare, though her pedigree and registration papers have been lost, or possibly never even processed… But, she has great movement and an even better jump, so I believe there will be a market for a nicely spotted Appy/Trakehner foal who can do dressage or eventing!

In my own progarm, I do NOT breed for color as a primary goal… I really believe in trying to utilize mares and stallions that have had successful performance careers or whom have produced offspring successful in the show arena… And, that is true of horses whether or NOT they demonstrate any “Appaloosa” color or traits… However, that being said, the one thing I would discourage you from doing is breeding your FEWSPOT mare to a stallion that is homozygous for the LP gene… That breeding could only produce another homozygous offspring and, though, you own a homozygous mare and have competed her… the issues of CSNB (night blindness) may have an impact on a horse’s future performance capacity, etc… JMHO…

Good Luck and please keep us posted!

I’ve decided that if I do breed her next year it’s going to be to a Trak. Love the breed, love my mare, should be a good cross. Now I just need to decide WHICH Trakenher to breed her to. I’ll keep you posted.

I have a 4yr old ApHC gelding by Lucky Justice out of an AQHA mare. Super sweet, too smart for his own good(he taught himself how to trailer load!) can jump a house, and has better natural movement than my OTTB mare. Can’t wait to event him next year!

15.2hds black and white blanket ApHC with some peacock spots.

I have a Appy/Trakehner cross that I absolutely LOVE. Super athletic and the best attitude of any horse I’ve ever owned.

These are not the best pics, but here are a few:

Well, since we’re on the subject of spots, here are three babies by Colorado Skrodstrup from this year

Edited to add that the middle foal was bred and is owned by Anguisette here on COTH :)…

Very cute, equine R. I especially like that first picture.

Paradox, did you get your guy from Mellanie at Confetti Farms? Her friend died and she found a home for her Appy/Trakhener cross. She said he went back east somewhere. That was just before I lost mine and was looking.

Oh my… Paradox I LOVE your horse!!! What a cutie

And… I just got a pic that is now my new favorite… me and the boys!!! And this was on the top of the page, so I figured I was allowed to share

Fleck is almost half TB and Danny (the little squirt) is my yearling bred by Rugby Creek. He’s half Irish Sport Horse and half App. I heart them both!!!

Oh, they are appsolutely gorgeous!!!

I cut my teeth on Appaloosas. My granny bred and raised them.

I have a 17 hand TB mare that is built to the hilt, looks like a WB. Now that I figured out her sugar sensitivity, she’s a dolly. Built nice, moves nice and is sweet. I want an appaloosa sport horse from her. I may be able to breed her next year, and am looking now for a large, good moving, great minded spotty hubby for her.

Jane Honda - your mare might be a good fit for Wapuzzan. He appears to be homozygous, throwing wild color on solid TB and other mares. He’s the sire of Fleck’s Danny, as well as:

Jester, 4 y.o. out of TB mare, running BN:

He’s a full brother to 6 y.o. Jerry running Training:

Both horses are at/near/above 17 hands.

Beentheredonethat, no I didn’t get this guy from Confetti Farm. Sorry to hear about your loss. :frowning:

FLeckenawesome, beautiful horses. Love them. And that’s a great picture!

Before I had this guy, I would have written off an appaloosa or ap/cross. I was not a fan. That was before I owned one. Now I’m hooked. This horse has taught me a LOT. Would love to have another just like him.

secretariat, I had watched a video you posted somewhere earlier of Jerry. LOVE him. I love that even his legs are spotted. And he seems like such a fun ride.

One of my boarders bought a stunning Warmblood/App 10 month old gelding. He is stunning and a great mover. His breeder breeds the WB/App crossesas well as Knabstruppers.

This is him the day he shipped in.
