So many choices, LOL!

So many choices! It’s like going into an ice cream shop and having to decide on one flavor!
My mare already moves and jumps like a hunter and I’d like to get a lower level dressage/eventer, that’s one of the reasons I’m not leaning heavily toward a TB (although A Fine Romance is to die for!). If I bred back to the Wap lines at least I’d pretty much know what I’m getting, for the most part they stay true to type, but once again there’s the strong hunter influence/look. I like Wap Spot and he’s not as heavily Wap bred as some of the Wap stallions that are Wap Spot 2 top and bottom…
I read 7 pages of another CoTH thread last night (from 2010) about App Sporthorses and a few breeders had App mares in foal to Traks, can anyone chime in as to how those crosses turned out? There are at least a couple of Traks that I’m tempted to breed her to (and one Hanoverian that I can think of).
ETA: I’d like more substance and better feet (and HAIR, a mane and tail for swishing flies would be nice!) than what my mare has but don’t need/want a horse that’s going to be 17+hh so the stallion doesn’t have to throw huge babies. A nice user-friendly 16hh would be perfect!
Martha, I LOVE Waps Limited Edition but being as he’s Wap Spot 2 top and bottom if he were bred to Toka that might be where the line crosses from “line breeding” to “in breeding”!
I can’t wait to see how he does in his eventing career!
FCF, I would have never thought of a Friesian cross but Grand Design is VERY nice! Have any of his offspring evented?[/QUOTE]
Megan is absolutely correct, Wap Spot is one of the most intensely line bred of the JG Wap stallions… that being said, he is also the one with the “most” dressage movement… Personally, and having seen him in person, I also believe that Waps Millenium has more dressage style movement…
So, regarding other stallions, personally, I still think a proven TB would work well for producing an eventing prospect offspring…
And, another one to consider, who’s owner is also here on the COTH, would be Sea Accounts, as he has enjoyed both an eventing and dressage career and is one of the few TBs competing at higher levels in dressage here in the US… I think he’s competing at 4th level/PSG, but contact his owner, Cyndi, for more information… http://www.debracysporthorses.com/DeBracy_Sport_Horses/Home.html
And, regarding Trakehner/Appaloosa crosses, there are handful of them out there… Altamont Sport Horses (http://altamontsporthorses.com/), who stands Hollywood Hot Spot, has produced several Appy/Trakehner crosses from their program… You might chat with Karri…
And, so funny what FCF mentioned about Schiffon… He is a magnificent stallion, who is owned by our dressage coach, Lea Ann Hansen… His babies are very nicely manner and have great athletism… AND, I am probably going to breed a grade, snowcap Appaloosa mare to him later this week… The mare is likely a “Wap” bred mare, though her pedigree and registration papers have been lost, or possibly never even processed… But, she has great movement and an even better jump, so I believe there will be a market for a nicely spotted Appy/Trakehner foal who can do dressage or eventing!
In my own progarm, I do NOT breed for color as a primary goal… I really believe in trying to utilize mares and stallions that have had successful performance careers or whom have produced offspring successful in the show arena… And, that is true of horses whether or NOT they demonstrate any “Appaloosa” color or traits… However, that being said, the one thing I would discourage you from doing is breeding your FEWSPOT mare to a stallion that is homozygous for the LP gene… That breeding could only produce another homozygous offspring and, though, you own a homozygous mare and have competed her… the issues of CSNB (night blindness) may have an impact on a horse’s future performance capacity, etc… JMHO…
Good Luck and please keep us posted!
