I have always liked Anglos and since I am in AZ I have access to top shows. It would be nice to have a horse I can compete in the ‘A’ hunter/jumper shows and in the Arabian shows. I have a nice TB mare that I love her conformation, height, movement and personality. If I can get her in an Anglo package I will be happy. She is a classic hunter TB build, extremely athletic and a big mover. The Arabian stallion I absolutely love ‘Shah Azim’ is deceased. I would have loved an Anglo by him. I have started a new search for a sporthorse Arabian stallion. I checked old threads, but there were few mentions of stallions. Does anyone have suggestions?
Are you prepared to import frozen semen from abroad (UK!) - I have been competing (endurance) a lovely performance tested stallion here and have seen (and ridden) a couple of his Anglo sons who have a great jump, plenty of size and brilliant temperaments. He jumps pretty well himself too. Just a thought!
Look at Al-Marah - Power Raid and Good OldBoy have both had lots of successful offspring in the Arab sport horse classes, including over fences.

I was also going to suggest Al-Marah. Quebec was approved ATA several years ago- nice horse! Tons of talent in their stable and the horses all seem to have fantastic minds too. Power Raid seems just amazingly athletic. AM Chance Command is also very exciting as a sport horse stallion.

We leased our hanoverian mare to a friend to breed to Tristtan+++//. The resulting colt born last year is incredible. He won several sport horse weanling classes and placed in a large DAD colt of 2012 class! Really classy stallion.

Didn’t know about Tristtan+++ yet, but really nice. And when I looked at his pedigree, I realized that he has some really wonderful old Polish lines, and is in fact a male descendant of the incredible Fetysz ox - a stallion that stood at the Main Stud Trakehnen prior to WWII and is the origin of probably the best dressage line in the Trakehner breed - via Famulus - Maharadscha - Flaneur to E.H. Arogno, and through daughters also in Gribaldi et al. Fascinating!

I have an Anglo stallion that would give you a registered 3/4 TB Anglo Arab, my fave for showing open and Arab. Lovely movers, great jump and FABULOUS brains. You get the mare’s size and the babies are born knowing what to do. Ann McKay bred him, he’s the real deal.

I am familiar with the Al-Marah lines. I know we don’t ride color, but I am not fond of greys. I am breeding for myself. However, I have to keep resale in mind, and I think it is harder to move a grey much like a chestnut mare. Plus, I want to try to not lose too much in height. My mare is only 15.3ish.
I spotted BA Vyagra Bey on the SHN payback and he was my top choice from that list. He carries himself very well and I like that he is taller. I definitely will be checking into him more. I am keeping HQ Esquire in mind. He seems to be an established producer. I like Tristan’s way of going and how he carries himself. The only thing that bothers me is his hip appears short, although he doesn’t move like it. One of the reasons I loved Shah Azim was his HUGE hip. Has anyone seen Tristan in person? Are the photos making his hip look smaller than it is?
My absolute must haves in a stallion are large hip, laid back shoulder, short cannons and neck set on at least midway up the chest. It doesn’t have to be set on high like the halter horses, but it can’t tie in low. I have ridden too many with necks tied in low and I know I don’t like them. My mare has a good hip, laid back shoulder, short cannons and neck set on just right for hunters. I am looking to compliment all of that. She is very hot and sensitive (Seattle Slew), but it appears most performance Arabian sires pass on good minds. I would like to tone her down a notch.
I did come across a couple of stallions with Khemosabi. I am not very familiar with Khemosabi lines for performance. Thoughts on Khemosabi get?
I have thought about crossing to an Anglo. I am not sure I want to add more TB blood at this point, though I am mulling it over.

Also check with Van Gilder Arabians they have a number of stallions including several with flat racing credentials that may bring the kind of athleticism you are seeking.
Khemosabi was a very prolific sire and is found in many contemporary Arabian pedigrees. He was a very pretty horse that contributed elegance and other desirable qualities to his offspring, but the athleticism that is found in some of his descendents tends to have come from other sources in the pedigree. Not a breeder, just throwing in some observations:
Saw BA Vyagra Bey at Sport Horse Nationals and his motion and athleticism really stood out.
Khemosabi contributes good minds, generally. He was also the #1 sire of dressage winners in an AHA survey in 2010 (and yes, I know that survey has a lot of flaws, but still…) The rest of the top 5 on the list were Desperado V, Ivanhoe Tsultan, Bey Shah, and Aladdinn, but I believe they are all deceased except of Desperado V (not sure about him). However, that list gives you an idea of the blood lines that have succeeded in the past.

Thanks for the link Dawn J-L to Van Gilder Arabians. Those horses are what I am looking for, breeding for athleticism over just pretty heads. Ben Rabba is very close to how Shah Azim was built. I will be looking at his lines. I also read that Night Dragon produced horses that could jump. This is why I love COTH, people know about breeders, trainers, etc… that I would never find on my own.
Agree: re Khemosabi…I’m not a breeder, but I have a half arab that has a lot of Khemosabi blood/old polish. Great mind, great gaits. Should go to upper levels of dressage (but also likes to jump). From what I have been learning this is typical for Khemo babies. Very nice sport horse types. Aladdin horses are also nice.
These types have very nice set hips and don’t tend to travel croup high. Nice set hips, travel well under themselves.
My stallion, Fames Reward is the sire of the National Champion Half Arabian Sport Horse Yearling, Born on the Bayou. This colt defeated all the warmbloods and half Arabians in his age group that were shown in the 5 state NW Region as well as the National show. If you are going to do shipped, go with AM. They are a very top notch facility. Also sport horse proven stallions and breed lines.
I like Tristan also. But I would want to see what he has done.
