Are the Games being televised?

How does Canada have coverage when HorseTV made a big stink about getting the exclusive North American rights? Did they resell them to you guys? I don’t know how that stuff works…

grumbles[/QUOTE]

Beats me! I have no idea how it works either…but it looks like CBC has longer coverage so that makes me doubt that they are getting the coverage from Horse TV. I see on today’s schedule Horse TV has a couple hours of coverage, same for tomorrow, whereas CBC has the entire full day of dressage showing both days (12 hours total). CBC is providing its own commentary too. I think it is strange that Horse TV has exclusive broadcast rights for the US, but is showing so little of the events. You would think they would have non-stop coverage since this is such a big deal in the horse world.

I’m glad you guys are able to watch it on CBC. I don’t have satellite TV here, just cable, and nobody is covering the WEG from what I can tell. However…I did get full live coverage of the Endurance on the Dubai Sports Channel. It’s just too bad they aren’t covering any of the other disciplines!

If anyone has or can get this channel (most people in Canada with cable, ExpressVU or DirectTV), I am prepared to do you some enormous favour (Um…gold or something from Dubai?!) if you will tape the coverage and share it with me! Plus, I will definitely pay for your two months subscription fee… I don’t think I can even see highlights here…

I’ll see what I can do, if you haven’t found anyone yet. I am taping it all onto the DVR but I’m not sure how to get it onto DVD. My clever brother assures me there is a way.

“Exclusive” rights

Maybe HorseTV bought exclusive rights to show the FEI-produced highlights

while CBC/Country Canada might be producing their own stuff.

Here’s the list of broadcasters for the 2006 FEI games:

(or maybe the HorseTV marketing department didn’t read the fine print of the contract  )

A friend of mine is going to try to tape some as well, but I will hope that your clever brother finds a way! Thank you!

How can you sign up for CBC TV - can you do through your computer if you have DSL or broadband - I’m in Virginia…

Thanks

FYI- you can sign for Burghley Live - on the Burghley website…

Did anyone try the online TV recorder that Alexandra posted?

Yes. I seems to capture the files and through an unbelievably complex and largely opaque multi-step process will download [two hours with DSL] and with another download, will “decode” them, but all I ended up with was a very long .mpg audio file that was labeled as a video file. :frowning: It also helps to read a little German, because not all the steps are in English. I had to spend half a Euro through Paypal to get a download slot that didn’t require a four hour wait.

Maybe I picked the wrong broadcast to capture. I’ve requested some others and will try again. There’s an interesting sounding detective series that might be good German language practice.

Two other files were marked as “bad” with the notation that the operators will try to fix them in the next 2-5 days.

One thing is clear: you need to specify what you want to record in advance. You can’t go backward in time.

My guess is that if you have no learning curve it probably will work out, and to Alexandra’s great credit, she did find a way that at least in theory should work like a charm, even if it didn’t work quite yet very well for me.

Unfortunately I was clueless when I started. Thought I was pretty good at this stuff but what I really needed was a seventeen year old to provide technical support.

I had the same problem until I installed DivX. I thought my video was damaged during the loooong download and tried downloading another only to discover that it was “broken” too. Luckily, I stumbled upon the solution because it was very frustrating to wait forever for a file to download and not be able to view it. Most of my recordings of the games are marked as bad/pending but I did manage to get a video of day 2 of the dressage. It made all of the frustration worthwhile.

Unfortunately, I don’t think you can. It doesn’t look like they are broadcasting anything broadband, only on cable and satellite.

What a shame that Horse TV isn’t more widely carried.

ding ding ding … Oakey once again shows her high IQ in her little package!!!

Adamantane and Reason

Where did your downloaded file go? Mine downloaded really quickly (it was only 8 MB) and shows as having been downloaded but I can’t find it on my computer…

I’m gonna be cranky if they show vaulting all night long. Hoping the dressage will take over soon!!!

I actually enjoyed the vaulting…but was glad to see the first ride of the Grand Prix Special!

That happened to me as well at one point. Since these files are massive – the one I tried downloading overnight was well over a gigabyte – whenever it appears the download is very small it’s safe to say that something has jumped the tracks. I think the intermediate steps end up in temporary folders. Eventually, with all the downloading of software and of the video and decoding and whatnot, the file you will want will get spit out into your ‘downloaded programs’ file, next to an identically named un-decoded file of the same length.

It looks as if whatever I did last night seems to have worked – at least I got five minutes of some fast-talking chat show hosts doing a feature on some rock music fan-magazine that is aimed at fifteen year old German girls  – but then my Windows Media Player kicked in decided to compete with my Real player on which I was playing the file (Real Player also required a fresh download to update, which seems to be the case every bloody time I use it) and playback broke down. I am going to clean up with Window Washer and reboot.

My gut tells me that this time it worked, although I never actually got to any horse activities and to be honest I won’t know exactly what this file covers until I can play it through further. Will keep you posted.

If I could remember exactly what I did I’d list it step-by-step, but last night’s effort was as hit and miss as yesterday afternoon’s. I just kept trying things until I got to a place I recognized.

Reason: I used something called “Flash get” (one of those many cryptic mystery download links) which was said to eliminate broken downloads and apparently does.
