On the whole âriding careerâ thing⊠it reminds me of another recent trend Iâve noticed.
Iâve seen the word âcareerâ used by the current generation of teenagers involved in high school and college athletics. For example, letâs say âJane Doeâ is a high school superstar softball player, and has been pursuing playing in college. When Jane commits to a specific school, the trend I have seen recently is for Jane and family to announce on social media:
âWe are pleased to announce Jane Doe has committed to attend Middle America University, and will be continuing her softball career there in 2022.â
I saw this last year on social media with three different teenagers and their families, in relation to announcements about playing a sport in college. Frankly⊠I found it sort of weird⊠none of these were Div 1 football or basketball players⊠for whom there is talk lately of paying actual salaries. Nope. These were just good athletes, who were going to decent schools, and were going to play their niche sports there. Which is great. But not a âcareer.â
I donât know why exactly⊠but this continual reference to a âriding careerâ by the K camp? It reminds me of this other trend.
In some ways⊠I almost think the whole description of what LK is doing as a âriding careerâ is just a verbal crutch the family has used to describe what she is doing with her life now. She doesnât have an actual professional career. And she dropped out of college long ago. She didnât get married, and then decide to stay home and raise the kids. She isnât working any sort of job. Sheâs just a 40 something old woman, with a hobby. Which is fine. But⊠it doesnât sound particularly impressive, or respect worthy. So⊠they use this âriding careerâ thing to puff it up a bit.
LK claimed via SM post to a trusted member of the dressage community (the woman who imported horses for sale) that she/RG had purchased cameras at Home Depot and installed them. Quite specific information: number of cameras, place of purchase, that they were up and running or RG was installing. HOWEVER, as this no longer fit their post-shooting narrative, she stated under oath that this specific reference to purchasing cameras was, in fact a lie.
When discussing the cameras that were mysteriously not working for - not the day, nay, merely the hour of the shooting, she was very insistent on saying they were purchases via Amazon and she gave a time stamp for her Amazon order. This was presumably to make it appear that she was extra right and sure and could prove they were purchased only recently. She even tried to act as though she was merely recalling the exact time to the minute of the order, Um, I think it was 8:07 AM, or whatever she said.
Citing the timestamp was a ridiculous bit of theatre b/c she had proven unable to recall even what she said the day before, so trying to appear as though she had that level of recall was comical, at best. It actually came off as calculated and clumsily so.
So, they tried really hard to make the Amazon order look like it was the only one by faking recall of a lot of specificity about it but, in order to make their story make sense, they had to say the Home Depot story was a lie - that LK straight up lied about the whole purchase, details and all.
That had to hurt. I think she was lying on the stand, not in the Home Depot post. But, either way, she had to sit there and admit loud and clear for all to hear that sheâs a liar, something she was fanatical about denying for 2+ years. Talk about having to âsacrifice the queenâ.
Iâm inclined to agree with all of this. I also think MB sat down at the table to talk, RG didnât want to talk, went into house, LK came down âsick of thisâ and started screaming at MB. MB goes to call 911 again and is attacked. Dog then attacks. The rest is history
I think you are absolutely spot on. I also think the police failure to collect those cameras and their data is just shameful. I believe they were actually turned off, mostly because I believe the altercation (not the shooting) was set up. But I also believe that there may be snippets LK and RG recorded inadvertently of their own conversations and actions that would have made them look even worse. And yes, Cloud. But by the time anyone thought to do anything about them, it was too late.
Iâm not familiar with mental health recovery at all but i was wondering if there a possibility, after release and treatment, that MB will ever remember what happened?
For the legal people, would it be dangerous to admit that if that was to happen?
Ok, Iâm not trying to bag on Rosie, butâŠI keep thinking about MBâs bite wounds. ED did not mention, nor can you hear in the 911 call the reaction of a man getting bit in the groin by a dog. My dog head butted the kid in the groin once and the scream he let out was deafening. So either those wounds occurred before ED called, in between ED and 911 or while MB was unconscious (or some combo of those things).
And this brings me back to wanting a timeline for the calls.
Well⊠hereâs the definition of the word, according to Merriam-Webster:
career
1 : a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling a career in medicine
-often used before another noun a career diplomat
2 : a field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially in public, professional, or business life Washingtonâs career as a soldier
Soooo⊠I could see the high school/college athlete trendy use of the word fitting into the 2nd definition. But hereâs the thing. There are people who do actually pursue a full career as an athlete. They are professionals. LK doesnât have a professional riding career. Sheâs literally an adult amateur. The kids I mentioned in my earlier post? Two are involved in college sports for which there isnât a professional next step. College is it. And theyâre playing at the D3 level. No scholarships involved. It just seems odd to me to use the word âcareerâ in that context. Pretentious.
Why not instead just say, âWe are pleased to announce Jane Doe has committed to attend Middle America University, and will be playing softball there in 2022.â Itâs not like Jane is coaching the team at Middle America University, or working in the athletic department at the school. Sheâs literally just playing softball while a student at the school. Itâs certainly a significant accomplishment to get picked up as a college athlete. But to call it a âcareerâ ?
Not to quibble, and this is admittedly a sidebar but there are a couple different pro options for softball in the US and the pro leagues in Japan pay former US college players quite well. None of it is near what a Major League Baseball player makes, but itâs getting better.
Sorry for the interruption. Softball is a love of mine.
The English language is constantly changing and also regional dialects exist. This phrase has been used the way you are saying is âwrongâ in my area for as long as I can remember. It is not pretentious in my neck of the woods at all.
Phrases and words like this interest me. I have noted an uptick in people using the word âsaleâ as a verb in place of sell. I am not sure if it is language changing or autocorrect or something else.
Maybe as those parents are looking back on the last 10 or 15 years of driving the kid to practice, paying for travel for tournaments, baking cookies for fundraiser bake sales, what have you, it makes them feel better to think about it as the kidâs career. Lol.
