Barn jacket that is waterproof, warm, and cheap

Thought I’d ask you expert shoppers. By warm I mean to 20-30 degrees.

I just want to be prepared for El Niño this year.

Any of the mainstream outdoors wear companies like Columbia etc will have waterproof “breathable” fake Goretex insulated parkas that typically go on deep discount after Christmas. Make sure to wear wicking layers, merino wool or tech fleece, to move the sweat up off your skin.

I found an Eddie Bauer down jacket at Goodwill.
Not a thing wrong with it & as it was Half Price Day, got it for $6.50.
For barn chores, new isn’t necessary for me.

Not exactly sure what cheap is to you  but I have an Ariat coat that’s going on its fourth year - super warm, waterproof, and covers the bum (mine always gets cold!).

Looks like this is the recent version: https://www.ariat.com/P17659_W_APP.html?dwvar_P17659__W__APP_color=RAISIN

Waterproof really adds to warmth because it traps air more.

I live in the temperate rainforest  and have gotten very fast at sorting out Breathable Waterproof Membrane Goretex Dupe from all the merely “water resistant” coats that are useless here

Look up “Rdruko Women’s Waterproof Snowboarder Jacket” on Amazon. I bought one last year and love it, it’s a bit bulky but not too bad, has a detachable hood, good pockets, washes well. It’s the only winter coat I’ve ever been truly warm in. Size is true, maybe slightly roomy.

Following, I need a new one, too.

Earlier this year I bought a pair of $18 “waterproof” ski pants from Amazon to replace my old insulated bib coveralls. The big draw was that they came in petite length, unlike most work/farm coveralls. However, waterproof they are not. I mean, for $18 I’m not complaining. I actually really like them. But I swear the water goes right through them like they are nothing. So as I peruse bargain “waterproof” coats on Amazon, I remain skeptical…

Is why I go for known brand names on sale.

Or of course getting nearly new in a thrift store is great too.

Cheap is…not that, but it’s lovely!

Haha fair!!

I’d echo @Scribbler if you’re looking for sub-$100 options. There’s a Columbia outlet near my Mom’s house and they have killer prices on ski/outdoor gear (got a really nice ski jacket for $90 one year). Maybe check an outlet mall?

Thrift store is THE source for work clothes. Waterproof and wind proof pants and coats. Gore Tex or similar, oilskin, etc. My newly favourite logging boots, NEW, steel toe, super comfortable, warm, for $10. They needed insoles. Can’t imagine what they were priced at the first time someone bought them. Wear all this stuff out, throw it away, go get more. Can’t imagine buying barn clothing at a regular store…why would anyone? Got a Kuhl sweater for $10. New condition.

Cheap, but not much size and color selection left.

32 degrees fleece men’s coat is inexpensive and super warm.
It’s not :100: waterproof but does fine in our snow/rain.

I have the Horze Brooke parka for the barn which has the zip panels to accommodate the saddle when I want to ride in it. It’s so warm and cozy, but also breathable so I don’t get too hot if the temp spikes or during barn chores. I’ve worn it in heavy rain and stayed perfectly dry.

If you’re not worried about equestrian-specific features I love my Eddie Bauer coats and they do really good sales.

Outerwear that can legitimately hold up to cold and wet conditions definitely falls in “you get what you pay for” territory in my experience. Unless you’re looking to buy used you’re much better off spending a bit more for a quality piece that will last you a while. You can find good stuff in the $150-250 range, or even better if you shop the sales.

Yes, that’s the one. Sorry about the size :slightly_frowning_face:

Not looking for equestrian specific, just something to wear walking the dog or the horse. I’m in CA and we don’t ride in the rain here.

Pretty much all my coats are from my local Columbia outlet. None are barn-worthy waterproof. My Columbia jackets are some I’m personally looking to replace.

I do love their Omni freeze shirts for summer, though.

No one’s mentioned Carhartt?

I wear their rain defender sweatshirt 98% of winter.

Uh this?

First link that turned up, not sure if I’ve got the “loose fit” or something else.

For the remainder, the really cold days, I’ve got a Carhartt insulated jacket, or a Duluth heated jacket.

The Duluth insulated fire hose overalls are also stellar (as are the Duluth fire hose fleece lined pants!) I think Duluth is all on sale right now, too!

Definitely Eddie Bauer then, and they’re doing 60% off outerwear right now! I have several coats from them in various weights and have been happy with all of them. Land’s End might be worth a look too; I had a parka from them a while ago and it held up through years of abuse at the barn, but when I went to replace a few years ago the quality seemed to have gone downhill. I haven’t looked into them recently though and their prices are pretty good.

I second the people saying to avoid Columbia. You can get their jackets pretty cheap but I’ve never had one hold up to more than a light misting of rain.
