OP said cheap in the title. Carhartt is not cheap.
Carhartt can be plenty cheap, on sale or second hand. Columbia etc isn’t cheap either.
You really need to look for waterproof breathable membrane and even then you will sweat inside the cost. Water resistant however will get soaked
I swear by any Mountainhorse waterproof coat. They are super warm (I live in the northeast) and completely waterproof. They last for years with everyday use.
Now that’s a price I could live with for New!
I like the blue color is called Outer Space
Carhartt now offers a pre-worn line.
I imagine they may be returns, I can’t imagine anyone sending back a Carhartt for a worn spot or teeny tear.
Still not real cheap, but the brand is proven to last.

I got an amazing fake Carhartt at Costco last year. It hasn’t been in the rain much but that sucker is WARM and was under $50. Keep eye out at Costco!
My go-to eBay. Unbelievable deals on stuff, and you shop from the couch. Thrift store is fun, but MUCH larger and more specific selection on eBay. I have a large selection of cashmere sweaters, none of which cost more than $25-$30. There is absolutely nothing like a cashmere layer. Then on top of that various outer layers, also none of which cost no more than $25-$30. Name brands like Columbia sportswear, mountain hardware, REI. I could never bring myself to pay full price for anything outdoor anymore.
eBay here too. Do a search under the high quality names (Eddie Bauer, Columbia, Mountain Hardwear, North Face, Patagonia) then search for gortex, waterproof. AND, if you can stand a mark on it, or a little hole you can get for CHEAP CHEAP. And our barn stuff gets stained and ripped anyways right? Take advantage up front.
Personally, I have two Eddie Bauer ANCIENT goretex long jackets. Love those things. Never put in the dryer. Easy to wash.
Be sure to click on the R side of the screen - lowest price…
Lookie what I found: (what I have are like the purple one and the red one on the right)

Not helpful whatsoever but add me to the Eddie Bauer second hand club. I bought one at Salvation army 10 years ago now. The zipper is broken but the button down works - that thing is a workhorse. I would say it is effectively waterproof - bet it would be more if I actually took care of it. Worth the sub-$10 I paid for it a decade ago!
Anyone have any favorite mid-weight waterproof jackets? I’d like something thigh length for riding, fully waterproof, with very light fill. Think 45-50F weather and out on the trails. I had an Ariat but it is not waterpoof despite being advertised as such.
I second using cashmere as a very warm layer. I got a men’s cashmere pullover at a thrift store for under a dollar. It had apparently gone through the washer and dryer, because it had shrunk and had the texture of cotton flannel. Not very attractive, but I bought it to wear for my job as a field archaeologist in Wyoming in the winter. That sucker was warm!

That’s exactly what I want, but it doesn’t need to be riding-specific.

For riding in the rain you really need a full length riding specific raincoat that covers your legs. You can get a shell and wear it over your choice of parka or fleece. I currently have an Outback Outfitters long shell rain coat, a Horse long insulated raincoat and a LeMieux waterproof parka. The outback and the Horze can be worn over any combo of warm layers you want.
Which do you like the most? I like not feeling like I’m the Michelin man.
The LeMieux is definitely for real winter. The other two can layer over anything.
Yup, always get thrift finds of excellent quality
I like North Face, Columbia, and a few others most.
If I wear a turtleneck, North Face track jacket, and then my Wind Wall or Free Country windproof jacket, I’m toasty. That’s in NY in winter. If it’s single digits, I add a down vest.
I love ThredUp
For us, Value Village, though their prices have increased recently, it’s still better than being ripped off at an actual “store”. We also have a local community volunteer run thrift store, where I have found a few hidden treasures for VERY affordable $$$. They have a lending library, book store, puzzles and games, Christmas room, clothing and household items, all in rooms in a deactivated old schoolhouse. I do clay work, hand building. Went in there looking for a lazy susan type turntable thing. Asked one of the volunteers if they had such a thing. Paid $2 for a hand painted wooden one that someone didn’t want any more.
I really like the picture and may order one if Santa gives me money. Now when we say warm…Id use this probably for every day, does this mean ehhh it’s 50s? Or it can tolerate snow and 20’s? I live in NY. I know it SAYS snowboarder…
I love the zip apart 2 jackets or together for a heavy one, but they seem harder to find AND be comfortable.
I live in New Hampshire and it’s cold! We probably have the same winter. I’ve worn it in the teens with a couple layers under it, sweatshirt and thermal tops. It’s a true winter coat. To me it’s warmer than the Tractor Supply canvas fuzz/sheepy line coat (Ridgecut brand maybe). The only thing that annoyed me is the collar stood up a little high, but I tacked it down with some stick on velcro. I wore mine all last winter. It’s a boxy fit, but I’m good with that for layers.
Awesome! Ty
