Interesting, I hadn’t thought of that.
My mountainhorse barn coats are 100% waterproof, and very very warm. I am outside twice a day, every day caring for 12 horses who live out 24/7. In the Northeast. So I’m in every kind of weather sometimes for hours at a time. I only buy Mountainhorse jackets now
Thanks, I’ll check them out.
It won’t be cheap, but IMO having had LLBean, Patagonia, Columbia, Barbour, etc coats in a variety of styles over the years, the very best waterproof coat I’ve had has been Henri Lloyd. Sailing people take waterproof seriously, so I’d look to brands like them or Helly Hansen for weather gear rather than an outdoor generalist.
i shop for cheap used down jackets and have had good luck on Poshmark. I’ve had the very best luck shopping offseason of course. I don’t care if they are a bit big…because i can alway layer a nice alpaca sweater underneath. I don’t worry about a torn pocket or a stain or sunbleached arm…but don’t tolerate bad zipper or a tear in down part.
I have no one to impress so i don’t care how i look in it. I have my horses here on my own farm…and they don’t care lol.
I just ordered an open box Ororo heated jacket. I am not in the frigid zones like a lot of other folks but there are times when I go down to the barn late at night and it is freezing and I would like to be warm. Or especially - sitting watching a clinic and not moving and thus freezing. Heat would be nice in those situations. I am usually fine in this climate during the day when I am working but sitting around is another story. Excited! My Christmas present to myself with Christmas money and not spending it all on hay.
I LOVE 32 degree outerwear and layering. I’ll throw in that the OP can get a larger-sized light rain coat and layer underneath that.
I have a rain coat that I layer underneath. I was just hoping for something cheap and easier to throw on.
I hope you like it! I can also tell you that a heated jacket is also very nice when you get into a cold car on a below freezing day. Makes those moments until the car warms up and the heat kicks in so much more pleasant…
I agree on Mountain Horse.Nothing beats my MH Grace jacket that I’ve had for years. They don’t seem to make jackets like this anymore! I got it for a close out for around $100 and I would buy another one if I could. So many jackets have cheap faulty zippers too. I am leery of Amazon brands as the fit is often very tight and small.
This is as warm as the well known brands that cost 3x as much!
It’s only rated water resistant. Where I live in Canada I need water proof!
I just ordered this jacket from Rick’s Saddlesource – $156. Everyone else has it for about $100 more, and Ariat only has size XS now. Saddlesource has all sizes and free shipping over $100.
