People also get tricked into thinking horses are individuals and have their own quirks and it is just them. They are special and do that for me and me alone. It is normal for us. We do it all the time.
No. Horses are a result of their training and other than that horses are basically the same. Yes they are in categories like this horse is grouped in with the rearers. So we know by our experience with rearers, what that means for a rearer being ridden by a beginner.
I have 2 anecdotes that really stand out for people believing their horse is different.
The first, Mum told them she could see their horse out the kitchen window and saw him roll, then get up and walk backwards.
Don’t worry about that, that is normal for him.
Well that may be normal for him, but that is not normal for a horse, he needs to see a vet.
Mum called the day she saw him roll and then get up and trot backwards.
She was at Horseland. She told everyone within cooee, not to take their horse to our agistment, she was sick of being told her horse needed to see the vet. She would be moving him asap.
He went down with colic before that. He had emergency surgery, a large enterolith was removed from his stomach. He had now over doubled his purchase price and lived
Of course I am ecstatic that the horse survived, but it is not fair.
Fisherman’s Friend was a Grand Prix Dressage Stallion. One day he did not completely finish his feed. He was immediately taken to the vet and did not survive the operation to remove an enterolith. It is not fair that the horse with heaps of warnings lived and the horse that was so well looked after died. JMHO.
My experience was with going to work at a dressage place and reporting that one of the boarders horses sheath was swollen.
Don’t worry. That is normal for him. It happens all the time. Call the owner she deals with it.
Okay but that is not a normal thing that happens to a horse.
So I will admit that I hovered while the owner was there.
One of the directions in cleaning sheaths back then was to use sunlight soap, because sunlight soap is extremely mild.
The owner was using Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid and would not listen when I told there was a difference.
So yes, horses are individuals, each one is unique but a horse is a horse and also basically the same. In its different categories.
That is why we can give advice even from the other side of the world.
