Wow, impressive. Not just the move but her continuing to pull away. How did the time stack up?
I don’t know how fast the track was that day, but it was under 2 minutes for 1 1/4 miles (1:59.77).

Thats way past respectable. Where has she been running? Not familiar with her and not following as closely as I used to.
…" super mare destroy a field of males, winning by 8 1/4 lengths, just one-quarter of a length off the mark set by Game On Dude in 2013. Her time of 1:59.77 is just .66 of a second off Candy Ride’s Pacific Classic record in 2003 of 1:59.11. "…
So even though she did if effortlessly & made it looks super easy, she was cranking along.
There is an online interview with Gary Stevens about the race. He said that even though Beholder appeared to run the race so easily, he expected her to be very tired afterwards, as it would have taken something out of her.
She has had two races in her life out of California. 2nd in the KY Oaks and 4th at Belmont in the Ogden Phipps. She seems to win everything in California that she is pointed at, had a break last year, and came back roaring. She seems to be undefeated this year. 2yo Eclipse filly in 2012 and 3yo Eclipse filly in 2013. IIRC, she’s only had one California second since the beginning of 2013; all the others are wins. Pacific Classic was the first time she’d ever gone as long as 1 1/4 miles.
Amazing race. Had her w/ Princess of Sylmar boxed in the KY Oaks a couple of years ago. Has always been a threat.
Do wonder why the issues away from California, though. Hope they are figured out for November, and she is happy at Keeneland.
(And thanks for the Gary Stevens interview links, RainyDayRide!)
As much as it’s fantastic to have Pharoah and the TC, it just makes racing that much more exciting to see individuals thrill in a race like this, and a precocious Jess’s Dream. How much fun is this week!

She’s been top class since the beginning, she was two and three year old champion, including she won two Breeders Cup races. But she was raced lightly last year due to injury/illness.

He’s the opposite of precocious! A late bloomer.
It’s Rachel’s Valentina who is precocious.
She’s targeting the Classic!

Just another dagger in my heart that I am not going this year. It definitely is shaping up to be one for the ages.
Will be interesting for sure if Pharoah and Beholder do meet up in the Classic… will be a great race for sure!

HELL YEAH!
This is shaping up to be one hell of a Halloween.
Yeah… Don’t have to work those days. I’ll be watching most if them…don’t know about most of he “undercard” on day 1 but all day Sat for sure.
Love this horse… crossing my fingers she does go to the Classic. There is also talk of her racing next year too…
I wonder how her history of being a bad shipper will play into all of it.
One would think they’d ship in early to give her as much time as possible to settle in.

That was absolutely beautiful to watch and beautifully ridden as well.
That’s one amazing mare. She’s at least 80% Nearco in her sire lines, but the non-Nearco lines are impressive.
Only caveat, though, is that she’s a California horse and doesn’t seem to travel well. The only times she’s lost since her three year old year have been her only races outside California. Given that, I’d still bank on Pharoah.
Thought you might be interested in what Alan Porter says about her.

After watching, in person, her last race and his last race, on tv, my money is on her… Would love to see another mare win the classic. Wish more american mares ran against the boys like in Europe…
She’s got a good bit of lovely European router breeding on the bottom of the bottom, the kind that is not seen often today in America. There’s a good bit of the old Darby Dan/Galbreath influence down there, and the Galbreaths brought a lot of super European sires to the US and produced one heck of a lot of American classic horses. That blood is still to be cherished when you find it.

She is the only one I wouldn’t be disappointed to see beat Pharoah. I can’t choose between the two of them - love him, but love the ladies!
